- Episode Description
- Episodes 103 - 105 of Heritage feature noted diplomat and editor, Carlos P. Romulo of the Philippines. Also participating with Dr. Romulo are Judge Homer Brown, of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Shepherd L. Whitman, director of cultural and educational exchange at the University of Pittsburgh, and Harry Gilmore, a student at the University of Pittsburgh. These three appear with Dr. Romulo on all the programs of the series. In this episode, to introduce the series, Dr. Romulo talks with Judge Homer Brown, Dr. Shepherd Whitman and Mr. Harry Gilmore about his relations with and reactions to the United States. He had been told, as a young child, that Americans were his enemies, but, he points out, once he had learned what Americans really were and what they believed, he became a staunch supporter of the USA. What is important and what we must always remember, he says, is that America stands for freedom, democracy and a respect for individual rights. These beliefs are essential to today's world, and Americans must do all they can to maintain and to act upon them. Dr. Romulo talks also of minority discrimination in the USA and of the importance of recognizing that the problem exists and must be solved. He concludes the program with comments on the Middle East crisis, Khrushchev's announcement to the USA - "We shall bury you," and the effectiveness of a materialistic propaganda drive in Asia.
