Description
Episode Description
Episodes 58 - 61 of Heritage feature H.V. Kaltenborn, "Dean of American Commentators." He discusses his life and varied experiences as they relate to his years in radio broadcasting. He provides insight into the background of many headline stories of the past by telling of personal incidents which made them more meaningful for him, and through his news work, for the public. Kaltenborn began his career as a radio news analyst in 1922. In 1929, he joined the CBS staff, where he remained until 1940. He then began working with NBC. His coverage of World War II entailed visits to the British Isles, Italy, France, Germany, West Africa, Latin America and the Southwest Pacific. Mr. Kaltenborn has received many news broadcasting awards, including the DuPont Award, the Radio Certificate of Merit by the National Federation of Press Women and a citation from the National Civic Federation. A journalist as well as a broadcaster, Mr. Kaltenborn is the author of several books, among them: "We Look at the World," 1930; "Kaltenborn Edits the News," 1937; "Kaltenborn Edits the War News," 1942; "Europe Now," 1945; and "It Seems Like Yesterday," 1950. In this episode, Mr. Kaltenborn begins with a discussion of the United States' role as an important force in world affairs as it came to be recognized at the time of Theodore Roosevelt. With Mrs. Dorothy Daniel, Pittsburgh journalist and broadcaster, Mr. Herb Morrison, Pittsburgh newscaster, and Mr. TFX Higgins, executive director of the Foreign Policy Association of Pittsburgh, he discusses the League of Nations, the Treaty of Versailles, Germany before World War I, dictators, Hitler, Mussolini, and dictatorship in the Western Hemisphere. He goes on to discuss colonialism and the USSR. In general, this program concerns itself with twentieth century history as seen through the eyes of a commentator.
