Two Boys From Mena: Lum and Abner: The Laughter Never Ends, Part 2

- Transcript
As Chet mentioned and divine was one of the well known personalities who join Chatta Norris on the radio program Lendu also appeared in dozens of Motion Pictures and was best known for his role as jingles on the Wild Bill Hitchcock television series. Visited Little Rock recently and we asked him about his connection with the lawman Abner program. I actually worked with him I guess a couple or three years when they went to a half hour a show and we were friends for longer even before that. And then when they when they went went to the 30 minute show like they asked me if I would play the part of those Booge the barber which was one of the characters that they had and I enjoyed the pits pitch work. Cliff Clifford care Charlie Weaver worked there then Charlie was Charlie cliff are kept in those
days and matter of fact the ID thing was it was oh my god ID was a thing that we use them in a moment after all that time. And then Charlie Charlie just somebody said to me my I was on the Jack Paar Show to Charlie where you're from and he said my daddy another Arkansas boy who lives up around Fort Smith had charge of the music and also played played or became one of the characters. You know we were talking you know he spent so much time with him and I almost felt like a baby or comes on for real and a good number of years old. So you were a citizen of Pine Ridge. You sure did that boy camp and many men and I still have pain on my wall what was presented to me I don't know how many years ago was a commission in the
Arkansas navy that was given to me by my dad and that was before I ever worked with along with any divine Charlie Weaver and Zuzu pets. That was still another popular entertainer of the day who occasionally dropped by. That got him down toward Frances Langford. Singer and actress sang with a number of the big bands of the 1930s and 40s era and appeared in several motion picture musicals. She also had occasion to drop by Pine Ridge one of the early lamang Abner's shows. We have a portion of that program that we're going to hear now. It was probably first heard during the late 1930s. So let's go back in time to those grand old days of radio and find out what's going on down in Pine Ridge. I. Mean. I have. Found.
Out. To everybody out on a party line mighty proud your and wish you could be down here. You have to be my big crowd here. Now we get on with our culture. Your primary spring band don't wear any campaign to avoid. You. Hi. Everybody. I have a lot of time on my hands rapping. Help can be here right now may me. I got I get you a gift from me. I got out for a good looking girl like yourself just and over here your summer resort hotel. I know.
Ask me Frances Langberg. Mighty proud to have. Her take your purse and out in the community here in Pine. You don't want our way out to California to make a new moving picture here or you you ever get moving. I want to tell me something. It is very kind to come here to help us out on our little get up tonight and we're going to have that full scale orchestra player company man for. All right. I know of humanity. Call me ask. Me. Why. Many different you in Canada. When we find out that. We. Both. Love. When I got to overcome. And. You. Know. Like. You. Know
what. I'm. Getting my. Fine. Fine. Fine. Fine. So. Stop pretending we can't do anything and everything.
But I had to tap on energy. You don't quit. I can't woman Elena going around the care. We're hearing here tonight. I've gotten looked back and I wondered why you know can't ever go ahead with the program I want to tell me. I heard from you your own jaded me and I don't hear half. Off her on a program I'll be happy but. Hey. Or. Thank you. Bye. Bye. I'll see. You. Back. For goodness sake you're getting up and leaving her to do with her money. I wonder how that could find.
Besides appearing on one of the Lamanna Abner radio programs Frances Langford played another part in the careers of those Arkansas humorous. She appeared in Lamothe Abner's first full length motion picture. The boys have been reluctant to make movies at first but finally relented and went on to do a series of Lamonte Abner films that proved to be very popular with their fans. While the other feature length films are made we're going to see scenes from three of them. The first scene we're going to see comes from their first picture. Dreaming out loud. The title came from a song that Frances Langford sang in the film whereas most of the Lemmon Abner films centered on the humorous predicaments those two rural philosophers got themselves into screaming out loud was basically a supplemental drama. It concerns the hit and run death of a little girl in Pine Ridge. Well on to the townspeople. The
driver of the death car is a prominent citizen the Pine Ridge. A young boy witnessed the incident. He's afraid to tell what he knows. Well as the scene opens the boys being brought to the doctor whose office is above the Jotham down store. Boy is deathly ill. The doctor who has suffered a partial stroke is unable to treat the boy without the help of llama. Let's watch now as we see a scene from this 1940 llama that underfilled. You. Can. Feel terrible pain but I don't know whether it can get here. You can put them on the TV. Don't cover it.
You want to see it you. Uncover his chest. I don't. If you're taking or two. Yes just a little while ago were true. How serious is deductible. Very serious. It's you know you won't you please doctor but what you got to do something. You're the only one that can help. You can't let him die and do the best I can do. But you love that you've got to help me. I don't know where he's at work. But you've got to be my hands. Anything you say to Captain Dallas you find a bottle of tablets labeled simplifier you can get them. And that might give me a warning in cases not too far advanced to give me something
I didn't there's almost a certain cure usually within 48 hours the temperature drops to normal the patients and almost entirely out of danger. But in Jimmy's case the question is will well have time to work with this girl was. Only waiting for it to take effect. The only thing that's going to keep Jimmy live is oxygen oxygen and oxygen what they got down there that the dog tanks over here. I know that. So you can go right after you telephone the garage and hope it will bring up a tank of oxygen right away. Harry. End OK. You got one of them tanks oxygen their oxygen tanks and air it well get one to work doc was all you can. If we're going to give him the oxygen there are several things I'll need. You've got to get them for me. I don't know where or how but you've got to get them first. I need the future I think even with a
couple of weeks easy we've got some them downstairs in the store. I'll keep on going out the door. I need something to punch holes in the top of that jar. How about a ladder onto that. I guess so. Get it. I don't need your help to get this job. I tried to help you I'm going after soft mail. And you going to wait on me. I want heaven. I want a pound of coffee. You know where it's at. If you take it off the. Dog that's fine. But I need two holes punched in the top. Let me do it now. Get some rubber tubing to fit those holes about four inch rubber tubing. Where are we going to find it. I don't know but get it. Oh come on let's go find it.
OK. OK. Well I do. It's rubber tubing. All right. I don't know what dark aims to do with it but you've got so many things to work you can use here as you are your doctor where you want to go there. For the boys. Thank you Caleb. You stay here with me. I need you just up to now we need something to fit over Jimmy's face piece of rubber to make a mess. Dr. Byock. I don't exactly know what you mean but I could use a black from Jimmy's foot just to get it. Out. That dog that will do for power is not enough. Well that's
all they want. They didn't have to be rubber tubing. It could be metal. Right. And I was just thinking no to use a metal tube in an automobile. Of course they do come on here. I agree and I think I know where we can get so hurry. I was going to have to do the metal tubing will have to be totally clean get a pan full of boiling water on work and then bring them all what they want without football. Never mind. And keep it real. Thirty years. Right there. Wait a minute everybody there. I dare. Call. Because. I know he's. Bleeding. I reckon we were right now. Well we got time for that. Go ahead. Get that tubing over there. You got the bomb. Well that's fine. You didn't just
get that dilutes the cream but you take this better and you have to put over Jimmy's face. I mean we have you here take this tubing on one hand a bit through the hole and the top of that just keep it above the water. Then I touch the other end of that mask. Then seal the tube in the top of that jaw with that wax is that metal tubing. Yes that will take it west. Now take one individual the oxygen tank then run the other end through the hole in that jaw almost to the bottom of the jaw. Now it works. Water will worsen the oxygen. Otherwise Jimmy could never stand it. I was like that mask over his face tight and hold it. Now was turn on the oxygen.
I. Know. You've been. Up. There for. I.
Wonder what's happening. With the auction as. It goes to Moscow. That. Would be all right. That was from dreaming out loud and I'm sure you'll be glad to know that everything was happily resolved in Pine Ridge. Incidentally when we asked Chad Locke which was his favorite limit of Abner film he cited Dreman out loud.
The next film we're going to accept is whatever more humorous we're actually going to see two scenes from the 1942 Lamonte Abner comedy bashful bachelor. Now in this film llama's chording of pine ridge Meydan and is trying to impress her by doing heroic deeds. But his heroics don't quite turn out the way he had planned. A lot of work be quiet. I haven't needed it for nothing. But all this for what are we doing down here on our old track why we go off operate all the way from home. Of course not. Wow wow wow what a to go. You said if I come down here you you have to fight for me not easy way out for you. I think we better climb up in my bedroom. Just put up my hand and before we got to tie me up for. A me last Friday.
Well now you've been there to help me make a hero out of my she'll be about to make you keep and I'll do it too. All right to beat your chance to play ball with me. Play ball. Is that what this prize is a little bit. Oh not faithful ever. Well I've got to learn to play football if that's what you're talking about. I'm quite there every year. I don't know what they do me a favor by Panipat. I don't want to. I wanted to play. Well we're going to tell you cross the railroad track here. And when the train gets about a hundred yards from here I'll run up the track here. Cedric now hide out the solidarity and we run up the track here and I'll time and save your life and make a hero out. Right. Why the gas tax break. Oh you don't. Believe it. Help me. Oh don't you think August. We don't try and blame it
all. I'm going to have no pain no gain in doing it. No please don't do that can't be how somebody might hear it. Oh they will often do that. Blame it all. I don't know who I am and don't worry about it and I'll be right back. The train got behind me. Nobody can see me. Granny if you don't make them go out of me by read you've never seen any that we've ever seen. I'm paying you to help me every one of my going to get a bit so that we get around to that. Don't blame me. Blame it all. I hope they stop the train and all the customers get out and shake hands with me. Maybe the engineer did get up there and they haven't tried be into the county seat where.
The planes get low. Oh no we've got plenty of time to. Do the poster who gets to have a bigger hero to make out on me. Yes. But. It. Is. No. Good. For. You stay around here. Every. Flight with the greatest idea I ever had. Why I have never. Before to make it here to. Get. I anything. Hurry. Ready baby. Don't be. Scared. Wait a minute. I. Look at the heroes now. I'd rather not discuss it. Yes.
Well. What makes you think they came this way. Well I just figured it out. Sure. I you figured if I had never thought about what I think it all sounds like good treatment to me. All right then pour it out for me. Like did you hurt yourself. When you got this or all the way to go. Well big job to go to work come see me and my partner we was going to make out like I was kidnapped him and he's paid by the Thornfield a ransom note that we're trying to go to. He was going to give us 10 bucks and shake somebody down for a grand. Well if anybody is going to get it we're going to get the green. What we want. I get no grand Piner. It would not be here and just come everybody be here. Posti and my partner and rescue him. Are you going to be no rescue mister. Not till we've had time to collect and if that silly looking guy for years wants to get tough about it
we'll fill him full of gold giving day nothing I can do to make you fellers believe me we believe you. And we're going to be all nice little pals together as we kind of that don't. Why you lower down snake in a week. Hey what the you know milling around down here. I. Can. Keep your mouth shut you little boy. You want who will keep your mouth shut. I just admit it man he'd be more niter can't up my bear. I'll handle it by myself. But love you all. I don't want you to get hurt. But if I have any trouble you can come and help me out and come with you. Here comes the other guy. Let's get over behind the tree and give him a warning to keep away. From. You. Guys so don't we don't believe his own partner. I don't want him on. He never let us out. Good.
Idea. He didn't say nothing about shooting. Nothing looks like a young cannon. But not far Manulife on the head long. From. I. Don't know how many. Bullets his fingers marble. I must be crazy to let him have it. Get back. Quick You got me. Get out of here. I don't know what he's like. Come on. A brick. Come to. My work. After I told you to work out just like we did. You told me I was a good idea having him go for shooting blanks too.
Did you tell him to do that. Bomb them weren't black. They were using real bullets. They were going to hold me here. You paid him a thousand dollar ransom. Oh you're just joking. You're just saying that to get even with me on account of that railroad business. I know you're saying it. If you think that want real bullets you can take a live picture there. Take a look at your hat. Oh my goodness. They will. All shell shocked every time I say it can take up a seat. We've got to having them all on time. Oh all the crazy idiotic stunt driver here in my life one takes a problem. Now is he a hero. I hope so. For one hour he gets killed.
Some of you film buffs may recognize the actor who played that halfwitted Cedric we had in those two scenes. It was great to setting an actor who was known for his roles in a number of W.C. Fields films by the third and final look at Laumann Abner's film careers will look at two scenes from Seoul. This is Washington made during the height of World War 2. This film was Lamanna Abner's contribution to the war effort. The story deals with their desire to do something patriotic and quite by accident. I know concocts a formula for synthetic rubber. Pine Ridge heroes then decided they should go to Washington to turn their valuable secret over to the government. Well in the first of the two scenes we're about to see we find Laumann and are looking for a place to sleep and room Scarus Washington D.C. They happen on a park bench by chance find themselves sitting next to a problem ridden congressman. See the Senate actually work like we did today is something they'll save our expedition or
do some interesting stuff in there. What did they say I never could keep up with what they are do for her follow now. I jumped the track their summer to find a big investigating committee to investigate the investigating committee at the house of inquiry appointed yesterday. Intend to ban flechette out of the water for a phrase I would be derelict in my duty to the citizens of my state if I didn't do something about the situation. But I am helpless helpless. You say the soil is completely and. Wasn't being pretty is now part of last year's drought gone so far that even crop rotation doesn't help fill my bill for reclamation gets nowhere. I'm at my wits end. I sympathize with you Senator. I know exactly how you feel. They tell me that if I could find a cheap way of having a cheap energy where are you talking to me. If you had. If I had word. I don't mean you personally
means in the song. He may make the ground good for blowing stuff. We can do that. Sure. Hey we've got a special kind of worm you can get. You can either buy the worm itself or egg. We had a draft down here in Pine Ridge a few years back in fact saved our lives. What did you did right. Well our father still raised. Why. This is very interesting. But workers injured the delicate roots don't they. No not see their little red worms about that. Besides making a good maybe solar powered up is a big thing but you know really when you get a whole bucket full of them from out for a quarter. But I have an entire speech to take care of have you any more on one bucket than that I'm afraid would run for money. No. They may be pretty bad. You just get yourself a mama and. Papa and for you to say Jack Robinson don't need to go into detail about that after all. Well this is splendid gentlemen. I owe you a big debt of gratitude. Congressman are you really. Goodbye Senator. Thank you
gentlemen. Thank you Senator. Not at all. You say you're from a place called Pine Ridge. Yes. I gather that's a small town but a big a small town in the world. Are you ready for it. My biggest cherry hill right now. Don't pay no attention to him Congressman. Well if you're from a small town perhaps you can help me to be proud to try. What's your trouble. I have rather a grave problem. The draft has taken many young men from my rural communities and the men and women left behind are migrating to the large production centers because of wartime wages naturally. The result is a great many of our small cities are becoming ghost towns. Well for now we were faced with that same problem at home when we were hurt. Well tell me what did you do. Well the first thing we found we abandoned the committee looking into the matter and we found out they could make more money working in a shady they didn't live here cheaper in fine railroads. So we called a meeting of all the town folks together down at the school
house and I got up and I told them show it now I admire you for wanting to get out and work in and plants. You can do more real good toward winning the war by staying right here at home and raising farm products to help feed them folks you don't have to do that kind of work. Fact he told he shortly I heard him I said well I'm out up here that take you there from me when he said it right on the desk for the school. But he told them he said if you were honest I will say. That. Question has been worrying me for weeks. They had an immediate solution. I'll probably be on that same page. You. Don't have to keep a certain point. They don't me and I've had some research done and they were done right. So my problem for me quickly in an expensive one on a park bench
right will be. The. Right. Senator Vitter service spokesman. OK we that one. Get that about takes care of your case. All right you should say it does. Thank you gentlemen. Thank you very much. Thank you. OK. You were not at all not at all. Did he forget the banker. No he don't. Oh no sorry judge you step out of line and lost your place. So I just took over at the courthouse when I'm older. That ain't no excuse you have to get at the end of the line with your you family right. Mack isn't the place to size. Yes I know. I beg your pardon. This is a pleasure I assure you.
What's your trouble. Well my problem sir discussing it all over Washington as a matter of fact. In our last scene Abner is suffering from amnesia which resulted from a bump on the head he would see while demonstrating his formula to the government officials then decided that Abner should be taken back to Pine Ridge in the hope that the familiar surroundings were revive his memory. But as we all see llama's and having too much luck in bringing Gardner back to his senses. Where are you going to do that. He's back there in the room now he thinks he's a commando. Not. Ever. He try to shock maybe a sudden fright. No no don't do that. It's because you didn't know one of just one please. Time is the essence. Forty years. And here is Mr. Marsh. That means we got to work fast.
We've tried everything the doctor suggested and nothing has worked. Now we got to try that. One last desperate measure. All that and you ain't going to get popped on the head. I'll give you that right now. I each day here in Pine Ridge thinking we'd better be Davenport. All right then a man and a white couple come and get him and you won't be able to see him on business and say he ain't going to get back. But this is the last day and if I get that point it is a day I'll be out of my year and the country will be facing a crisis. I'm patriotic shoot anybody else but he ain't going to get off very well then pick up Pine Ridge. Don't you want to be fine with your hero. Do you want to get rid of me. Do you want to go back to the Hall of Fame for your bust of the Hall of Fame. Well it's got to be done. Here I am desperate and I reckon it's up to me to do it safely. Well here we are just a very squeamish. Just him have it. One of. Five men were in enemy territory.
Mr. Davenport Mr. Davenport very. Mr. Davenport. Oh they're here. Come on out of there. Mr. Davenport we've got business to do that. Oh come on make your Davenport out of that plane. Mr. Davenport. Very well may Abner I know your honor this summer. Agner don't do that. Get out from under there. I can't do it. I'm fixing up my gang of Asian I struck at dawn for goodness sake come on I want to talk to you. I want to talk to you too. How many you got how many are. How many times have I got time to play soldier. I got off
the davenport. I had no idea. Come on out maybe I'll surrender. I don't get it. Then I. Get down. I hears a lot of talk. Maybe big. Hear a commando too. Well sorter. You won't talk to me about well him Malachi get. There ain't no say Gadol all game my secret all auguries all you know good and we'll actually get along. It ain't. Not yet. Here pick me some nice flowers from my yard here and just keep looking at the book. I think I sort of used to be on I and if I can it in general if you've got a hit on the head with that hand on would it hurt me. Why of course not naturally. I want to be here today. I mean it's fine. You will need to have a long comfortable off on getting off our feet. Well why don't you take it off and rest you hear a few minutes. He don't know that I'm on
duty. Well let me try. Don't teach me I might join your army. Why should you be proud of having no. See now what sort of fire did you leave her. Oh that is how I mean she said. Was it all flash and I've got to hang on let me try it on again. Oh excuse me excuse I thought you done with it. Here leaves nasturtium to get off our party I'm going. To make a pretty large. Granny I can. They are going to Mark Preston Mark. I should never ever give Eric your head I don't think so. Come get him out from here. I don't have heart. Well I know where
I agree. He called me on. What are we doing here now after you just call me. I've been calling the alarm for 50 odd are always in Washington. You've got your memory back. You got to remember. Well Abner regained his memory. He went on to star in such films as going to town. Partners in time two weeks to live and Lohmann Abdul abroad in the late 1940s. Nor is that about with his health the rigors of moviemaking proved too much for him. So he and Chet retired from the motion picture business but they continue to do their daily radio show until 1955. All of the radio shows 25 year history was the ultimate tribute to its popularity. Landing at of no we're not without detractors. Chat addressed himself to this question earlier but we thought we should obtain an opinion from someone who could put Lamothe Abner's humor into historical perspective. So we gave them even more. The director of the oral
history department at State College of Arkansas and first vice president of the Arkansas Historical Association an opportunity to express his thoughts on Lamanna Abner's effect on Arkansas. Has Arkansas has suffered from an image problem. This problem is associated with the state's supposed backwardness. And there have been some people who tried to connect this image this backward image to people like Bob Burns Opie Reid Thomas Jackson and of course Lahman Abner. Now to what extent is this true for any of the or specifically in our case. An. First off. The truth is Arkansas has had. A degree of backwardness throughout its 20th century experience. We found ourselves low in the indices of many of the important indexes to progress and success. Wealth.
Prosperity and therefore we can't really blame. People like Leming Abner. Or Bob bones or anyone else for that image. The image is ours. But now in the second aspect of this problem. To what degree does Lemmon Avenue. Fall in the same category with Bob Burns or Thomas Jackson the famous slow train through Arkansas which so often ridiculed the state and its people with bad jokes and old jokes. And on that score I think I'd have to say that they don't. That is Leming admin do not belong in the same category with slow train to Arkansas. You can buy Barnes and tither the reason for this is that if you look back and remember the type of humor that lemon Abner used. It was not ridiculing anybody. They did make fun of each other or their neighbors or anyone else. But the
fun was simply the humane humaneness of these characters. The humanness that's involved and the everyday life situations that they met they took just plain ordinary people. And plain ordinary situations. And found what is really the most divinely humorous of all. Mankind in his day to day activities by Burns people like this often you know with their bible jokes about their ancestors and so on. I must look kind of silly in a way. But with. Even the most outrageous character. Had a numinous to him. Walcott could kind of think too I said. I know somebody like that really. That's very much like my uncle or. The fellow down. The road. So I don't think you can. Saddle Lamonte Abner. With. Blame for the way people see this. As a matter of fact I'd say that
probably the people who saw Leming and men from round the country. And thought to themselves if that's the way folks lived in Arkansas it may not be such a bad place. Well it's been nearly 20 years since those two and enduring personalities last two before radio microphone. But they haven't let the past slow them down. Chet now runs an advertising agency in Hot Springs. He also finds himself called upon to act as an after dinner speaker in many parts of the country. On the other hand oversees his farm in California. You can also be found out on the golf links. More than 2000 miles. Now separate this once inseparable comedy team. They don't let mere geography get in the way of a friendship that has endured for a lifetime. Those two boys from meana went from a small town in Polk County Arkansas. The sound stages of Hollywood still manage to see each other occasionally. And one such reunion recently took place in Los Angeles.
Chet Norris your partner for 25 years did either of you ever get tired of the roles you play. No not really. After doing the part for so long I learned to love this character and never get tired of making money. But you got tired of work and everything but. It wasn't tiresome doing the calling you. You love them. And then when. John believe your name is NORRIS I noticed everybody calls you toughy. How did you acquire that money. I'm. A long long time ago in a. Football game. I happened to. Run for my six yards for a touchdown on the game. And. Over the next days these little buddies. And they started calling me up and I'm still stuck with it when I'm so decrepit I don't know. How did you decide to get this comedy act together.
Well I guess we started because we associate together. And. Started abusing each other by imitating these old characters. And. Entertaining our friends and establish kind of a mythical reputation. In the quarter century you were both on the air you did over 5000 shows. How did you come up with the ideas for those shows. That's rough. It wasn't easy. There were times when we did a lot of fluid walking on the page and you reach an impasse and after about 15 years we got some writers and we started making movies. We had to have writers. And there just wasn't enough hours in the day and we still work with them that. We just about exhausted imaginations trying to the point where you start on an idea for a script and thought you had a fine idea. But I try to remember to done that about 10 years ago. So it was rough.
We understand that Chet was like for broadcast because of a traffic jam when he arrived. You were doing a show about yourself. Is that correct. That's right. How did you handle it. Well I just did the characters that I did and I both had different textures with the early days radio. You did your own character because there wasn't any great or place you could call for actors. So you're writing scrap and he brought a catcher and you did it. So Chad did the right. And. I started doing my taxes at 11. And when you're doing all the voices your mouth gets so full of saliva you don't have a chance to swallow that you almost drowned. And the answer to that right away that rang the telephone and the props rang it. And asked in a phone I guess your chance to swallow keep from drowning. And so I had just. Had the phone rang. And mentioned the fact that Lon was in the county seat you know I said What are you doing in there. And he walks in the door
and I come to him and said I just said he's 20 miles away. So I was waving him off the mike to get away from there and he knew there was something going on so he just sat down until I found this to show I was the first time I ever realized how bad we were. Jeffrey Toobin is obviously reported dead on three different occasions. Here you are Mark Twain and something in kind of a little bit there. Mark Twain I think at that time said that his death was greatly exaggerated. And I think he said the story of his death was only slightly exaggerated. Now I'm not sure yet where they are right or wrong. That's a toughie. What do we have to do to get you back to Arkansas. A lot of Arkansas. I'd like to be back with Chad too but I got out and bunch of in my farm and everything and operate
everything from back in Arkansas. But I love Arkansas. And then I go back and visit and not much I can do about moving back there this time like it comes back occasionally but not often and I go back to get money from Chester. I'm not sure. But that puppy check on them all. But what do you think of the comedy of today. Can you compare it to your brand of humor. Well some some shows like television shows are similar situation comedy. We never went in for gags or jokes. It was an interesting program with what showed today compared with the situation comedy differently in Los it's always a good time unless we have a situation comedy. But I say Sanford and Son situation comedy and a family situation comedy. And of course the show that I love the wild.
Situation Comedy. I think it's the situation comedy. Someone who. Has always been an amazing stand up comics no joke. But. The situation here. And I love it. Well tell me how do you think your comedy would work on television today. I don't know if you were to consider it but I'm not so sure you played well on television. I think the overexposure of television would work it out or we wouldn't have them in my head and radio. I agree with you. Of course I never have. I'm. Not ready. They. Been running shows. On radio stations in many
stations. Now what about those shows put on tapes off the last days. And I'm amazed that the family. We get from the youth of today and not long ago. You probably mention that name. Either they find a Burfoot to play in here and I attended them. And I signed autographs for a good two hours. People lined up. And I say 90 percent are doing between. 25. And. Lined up and I couldn't believe they were less nights I didn't think the you thought that they would listen. And. I thought I would just. Sign autographs wadded up and throw it away. But it's why they were asking about the program. Ever listen to clarify and listen to the program because they asked me questions I was going to come out of that particular situation. I wasn't listening so the problem is not forgotten Not that came up but I was really amazed at the. Nostalgia of the youth of today.
So I believe. That's a good big answer. You ask me what time it is and he tells you how to make a watch. I'm smart. What do you think makes your humor appeal to the youth of today. Basically. It's basically my account small town. Always worried about things within. Anything that happened 100 miles from Pine Ridge wasn't even a great concern. And. They were worried what about the basic. Things of Life. Ever since. Then. Has a warm place to sleep. Warm clothing. Sufficient food to keep them warm. When. We should have it's long man just like just. Say it lasted so long. Yes because we did keep it clean over backwards you keep plugging because we realize that. Those three ladies who are listening to the
children were coming to strangers one. And it was normally accepted in the family circle. We never had one complaint in 25 years of any thought of any coming in the latter. Well you. Know I screw up on the promise we strangers coming into their home. We weren't about to say anything that you wouldn't say as a complete stranger and they didn't have to lock the kids in our room and tell us what the show was about. Of course we really did x. Now. I'm all in favor of that. I don't think you need a lot of. Smart. Stuff. To make a show on this thing. I think we should keep everything clean. And then. I want to go get it. But it shouldn't come into how to expose somebody that. Shouldn't be exposed to. The teachings of.
Your long experience. What are you most proud of about your work. I think that I'm glad of it. It's longevity. The fact that we were. On continuously we didn't even have a summer as we were. From the day we started we went for 24 and a half years. Without interruption. You mean you never took a vacation. They didn't fill in summer at that time and. Then you. Record. I was considered cheap and they show. They didn't have tapes. To start. Doing shows. So every show we ever did was a live broadcast. A few. Very few but a few vacations. Chat with me maybe for a week. And I would do the show using just my character and I would leave for a week and show up to do the show and I'm just using his character. But you didn't do that because to get it. But we. Want to know why I would get a week off or three days or something like that.
As you said earlier you both portrayed a lot of different characters in your act. Who did the voices of those other characters. Well. I did. Of course. Straight after the Coliseum and massive grey and. Scalpels heavy. And check that. And grandpapa Spears said you. Was the system. It was my way through what she did. I thought I got somebody else so that they were pretty busy characters. Can you give us an idea of what some of them sounded like Cedric. I never had it and I don't. Think. That's a. Good thing that I could do was set up. A method that. It was. So easy for me. What were some of the characters you did. DUFFY Well of course I. Was. My.
Boss. And then. You were. Down in the war or they. Were working you know. Jet and toughy about doing a little lemonade for us. I guess we just can't. Remember. Who. Was on that show was a telephone rang and one which I believe are jarring. Yeah. See. And. After that. Fighting. By. My beach I muttered something. Well. He just can't take my time. When we first started to cover story he keeps good stuff in my face and head start still ringing. Good night. And. We've done a Muji never had any major trouble maker. Ever took it out and said I'm going to jot jotting down strong
urge to make sure that. Mr. Sampson. Yes ma'am. What can you do I get up early here and write it down. I have. One sack of flour. I go in a can of flour. I say something about the idea that Bush in a potato pie gonna take no potato or go either. I mean I know. But I don't care about any of that right now. Mr. Sampson Why don't you get this stuff over today cutting some stuff. Ever dad blamed thing we got at that time to get ready. Right. That is what the. They deserve everything they got. All you all.
Do. What do you make of the same time to be speaking. This is the National Broadcasting Company. To. A
