The following instructional program is provided to Arkansas schools by the Arkansas Educational Television Network. There. Was a beautiful island in the blue water. Many birds and animals lived on the island with their helpfully Bernie very long. Meanwhile a tropical storm was developing several miles offshore. A hot air balloon was drifting. Mistery the pilot of the balloon became aware of the danger. And. Did the balloon away from the storm in hopes of finding a place to make a safe landing. Beat Down below the surface of the water. Sydney the seal was making his way toward the safety of the island. Meanwhile the balloons escape the storm. The tropical island and landed safely on the sandy beach. Now let's join Sydney and Bernie
and see what they are up to. OK that's good. Bernie now paying the string a little tighter like this. Well not that type of thing. Well there are other dismayed corpsman school work. Oh it looks like he's really enjoying his flying lessons. Now there's something I would like to show you here in the hot. I have six tone bells and I'm going to play a melody on these bills and I want you to tell me the name of it. Oh man this old man is built on six tones. Now there's something else that I would like to show you about the melody and that is that we have skits. And. Stepwise patterns.
Then. Repeated tones. Another step wise pattern. So there you see skips repeated tones and stepwise movement. Now let's sing our song this old man. Already made one big guy with an axe body whack a mole so man came running to get on my back body back Davidoff the ball rolling stone on my tree with a black man came rolling. Oh not seeing it again and this next time I want you to really brighten up. Have fun with it already. This song came
on my back body back so man came running back on my body like them all. Don't blame game rolling on my tree with a black man came running. Oh I love that song. Now I'm going to ask you something else I want you to hear this old man with an instrumental playing and I want you to be able to tell me the name of the instrument. Listen closely. You just heard the flute the flute is a very high
sounding instrument in the wood. When family and it was playing the melody from this old man. Now let's listen as we hear a very low sounding instrument in the wood when family and you're going to hear it play. Hop up my lady see if you can tell me the name of it. Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa.
Through. All of this soon was playing the melody the bassoon is a very low sounding instrument in the woodwind family. Now let's hop up my ladies. Say. POP. POP. POP. POP. POP. Rock. And Roll. Don't know why. So when. Did you ever go to a meeting. Did you. Go. On. Did you ever go to a meeting. No. So when. Don't blow. My Lady. My.
LADY. I. Don't know what. Others. Don't. Everyone likes that song. Let's go ahead and sing it again. Ready. Say. Hi. My name. Maybe. Three No. My name. My name. Is. Wrong. I don't know why. So when. Did you ever go to me. Joe Joe did. Going on. Joe. Did you. Ever go to a meeting on your. Show. Don't. Know why. So. Does. My lady. Friend. My. Lady. My.
Son. When done. Oh I love that song. Oh my goodness with you. Look out there. It looks like bird really getting. Older. He's enjoying that kite Bernie. Yes. You better hurry up. You know what. It looks like the clouds are moving in for the daily rain. You're just getting the hang of it. You know I think a lot is a lot but if a kite gets wet it'll fall down. Oh they are so right about that. And you know what. It's just about time for the afternoon rain. That's what happens here in the tropics. That's one reason that you see all these beautiful flowers and trees because of the tropical rains. You know it kind of reminds me of what it was like back at my hometown. I'll never forget the spring rains. Oh it rained all over the town. On this day
all over town it all. Came out showed on. The top it all. All this is a beautiful melody. I want you to learn it. So listen as I chant the first phrase to the first verse. It rained on mist it rained mist chat. It rained mist. It rained miss. Now I will add the music. All wrong. Don't mess
with rain because now it's your turn. Seen it. In Rain is the next part. It rained all over. The tone tone tone. Chad. It rained all over the town town town. All the music is raining down on the town. Your turn. Sing it. Bring home on the next part. It rained all over the town Chad. It rained all over the town. Now we like the music. It rang all. Your turn. Sing it all. Now let's try the complete song. Ready. Sing it
it all around it. Ray. Let's do it again and this next time. A lot of feeling into this song. Saying rain rain rain. Rain. All. That's a beautiful melody. And you know there's something I'd like to show you about this song. It's similar to this old man. Do you know why. Because it is also built on six tones. We're watching now show you. And there's something else familiar about it. The skips notice.
And we also see stepwise movement. So it is similar to this old man although the two songs are quite different now. You know when I sing this song I tend to want to sway back and forth and you know why. Because the song has a beat of three one two three one two three one two three. It rained. Missed it they missed it rained all over the town town town. It rained all over the town. 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3. Did you notice how I stressed our accent the first beat of every three. Well I want you to do that too. I want you to clap the beat Azzurri and chant with me this
next time. First let's just start the clapping part and then I will bring you in with a chant. Hands up ready begin. One two three. One two three. Ready. Chant it rain missed. It rained and rained all over the town town. It rained all over the town. 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3. Makes you want to sway doesn't it. So why don't we sway this next time. Ready Chad. It rained missed it rained missed it rained all over. The town around town. It rained all over the town. One two three one two three one two three. So it's that beat of three that made you want to sway when you sing that song. No. I want to get back to the bassoon. We heard the bassoon Earlier we heard it pop up my
ladies. Let's listen to it a little bit more so we can kind of review how this instrument sounds. Listen very closely. Did you notice the mini high and low sounds of the bassoon. Now let's hear how it sounds. Very fast rapid sounds. What about hearing some slow sounds. So we can hear very lighthearted music on the bassoon.
Very serious tones. Now why don't we listen as we hear the bassoon playing it rained on this. So this is a very low sounding instrument in the when family of the orchestra you know as I was singing the song at random is
what it reminded me of. It reminded me of another weather song that we have sung the wind released. Betty say all the way. When. All. Right. On 0. 5 5 5. 9. 5. 0. Let's sing this again. It's been a while and it's a lot of fun. Ready. To. Go. Oh.
My. God. 5. 5 5 5 0 Sydney is losing altitude. You got to keep the string tighter fall. But it's not working. Oh my goodness. Oh gracious. You know what the problem is don't you. There's not another way. It's coming down fast. Too bad. Oh I'm sorry about that. Just takes care of my kids. Yes. Well don't worry about there always be another when you know when you can fly again. Work it out when you are adding all of you with us today. Until next time Biden. Like there.
Explain. Kind of like you're doing there you know it rained a mist from traditional ballads of Virginia copyright 1969 University Press of Virginia. Used by permission. The wind blew east from Silverburn music book 1 copyright 1981 published by Silverburn that company. Used by permission. The following instructional program is provided to Arkansas schools by the Arkansas
Educational Television Network. It was a beautiful island in the blue water as I'm sure. Many birds and animals lived on the island with their helpful leader Bernie. Larry Bird. Meanwhile a tropical storm was developing several miles offshore. Hot air balloon was drifting. Don't. Miss Terry the pilot of the balloon became aware of the danger. And. Did the balloon away from the storm in hopes of finding a place to make a safe landing. Deep down below the surface of the water in. Sydney the seal was making his way toward the safety of the island. Meanwhile the balloon is escape the storm site of the tropical island and
landed safely on the sandy beach in Sydney and Bernie you see what they are up to. Do LCD What do you think about. That. Right. Also That's why you needed those potatoes. Well certainly mystery would you like to see my potato art. Oh I certainly would. You have so many interesting things there. How in the world have you done this. Let me show you how to do it here. All right. First you need a potato you need some paint and you need some paper and you need some kind of utensil that you can carve out a piece of potato with. Let me show you what to do. First you get the potato and you get a knife and be careful not to cut yourself and you cut it off. And then you get your little carving instrument which I'm using a spoon and you carve after a pattern or whatever design you want inside of the potato. Oh that's a great look and then after you get your design however you want your design then you dip it in your plate or put
your plate all that and put it on a piece of paper and you've got yourself an art print print. Oh that's terrific looking. I'd like to try one. I certainly rather see. I think I'll try this one. Oh I like this. This is a star pattern and I'm going to use red paint. I would you use an eye dropper because the light that it'll do a lot better perhaps a brush would do real saturate it real well so that it'll make a good clean print. I think that's going to be proof he did a good job with the carving. Well thank you. Didn't realize you had this talent. Bury me. Ok now I'm going to try it. Everyone watch. Oh let me try another one. Oh that's pretty too. Just one more. Well turned a very a little bit
more help. I was going to put a little bit more ink on there but does that make an interesting repeated pattern. That's very close of that. Oh this is no wonder you enjoy doing this. You know something when repeated patterns and Art give you a very interesting picture. We also find that in music we also have repeated patterns that give continuity to music. And there's a song that I'm going to sing for you today that has a lot of repetition in it. And the name of the song is Hey Betty Martin. Martin tip toe to toe. Martin. Martin tip toe to toe. In getting please be my swing I'll swing with you. We'll go swinging all day. Swings. Swings. Swing swing. All
the time. Hey we want. To. Play that bar. Tip. Toe. Tip. Toe. Bar. I like that song and I want you guys to learn it. So listen as I chant the words to the first phrase. Hey Betty to tip toe to toe Chad. Hey Betty Martin tip toe tip toe. Now I will add the music. My tip toe to toe. Now it's your turn. Say hey to tip toe to toe. The next part. Listen. Hey Martin. Tip toe fine. Chant Hey Betty Martin tip toe
fine music and tip toe on your turn. Hey tip. Toe. And the next part. Hey Betty Mar tin tip toe tip toe chant. Hey Betty Martin tip toe tip toe music. On tip toe to toe. Hey my tip toe. To. Toe. The last part. Hey Betty Martin please be mine Chad. Hey Betty Martin please be mine. And now the music. Hey see. Your turn. Hey Martin please be mine. Now we're going to try just that much. That's the first section. Just that much. From the
beginning. Ready. Sing. Tick tick. Tick. Tick tick. Tick. Tick tick tick tick tick. Mine. Things Right. Now we go to the second part of this song which is different. Listen. Swing with me I'll swing with. You Chad. Swing with me I'll swing with you. Now I will add the music. Swim with me. I'll swing with. You. Now it's your turn. Saying swing with me I'll swing with you. And the next part. Will go swinging the whole day through. Chad will go swinging the whole day through music.
Who will go swinging all day to. See. Who will go swinging all day through. And the next part. Sweet. So fine. Swings so fine Chad swings so fine swings so fine. Music swings so fine swings so now it's your turn. Saying swings so my swings so fine. And then swing swing all the time Chad. Swing swing all the time. Music swing swing music swing swing all the time. Now let's try the second part swing with me. I'll swing with you. Let's try just that part.
Saying swing with me I'll swing with you. We'll swing. Through swing so swings on my swing swing all the time. Now you know what happens next. We go back to the first. We repeat the first part again. So let's all sing. Hey Betty Martin just the first part again together. Reading. Say. March 10. Tip toe to toe to toe. To toe. But he's not. All that's great. Now why don't we try singing the complete song with the additional instruments. Hey Barbara. Tick tick tick tick tick
tick. Tick tick tick tick tick tick tock. March 10 please be mine. Sleep with me. I swing with you. We'll go swing. Swings so swings so swing swaying all the time March 10. Tip. Toe. To. Toe Betty my. Toe. To. Toe. To please be mine. Oh that's great. Let's try it again until we really learn it well. Ready. Martha. Tick tick tick tick tick. Tick. Tick. Tick tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.
Tick. Tick. Sleeve. I'll swing with you. We're going swinging through. Swings swing some swing swing on time and. Tip. Toe. To. Toe. The mark. OK very hard to. Tip. Toe. Tip. Toe. Not too big. Oh no you heard me say earlier that we have repetition in this song. And when you have repetition in music when you have patterns that repeat over and over again just like we saw with the artwork you know we had the same potato print over and over again. It gives continuity a nice flow to the music or the composition. Now I'm going to show you in the first part.
Hey Betty Martin with my step elsewhere where we have repeated patterns. Listen. Now you're going to hear this. Four times during the first part. Only watch this time. Tomorrow. Tip. Toe tip toe. Tip. Toe. To Toe to toe. Please be mine. So we see a pattern that is repeated over and over again throughout the song and it makes it easier to learn. It makes it a lot of fun to sing as well. Now there's something I want to show you and I also want to show the fellas because they're really going to enjoy this guy. You know as I was teaching this song you heard me say the first part the middle part and then the last
part or what we're talking about is the way the song is structured or built in other words talking about its form. The first part of Hey Betty Martin we're going to call a we're going to label it just like the letter A. And since the middle part is different we're going to call it B. And then we will go back and repeat the first part again. So you know since it's the same thing we'll call it a day. So what can we say about the form of the song. A b a form. That's the way it's filled. ABH for sure. Well Miss Terry you think we could put a little bit of movement into the soul and demonstrate before it's all do the early part in Sydney will do the big part by. Saying tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. Tick tick tick tick. Tick.
Tick these right wing swing when you will go swing swings. Swing some swing swing all the way to. Tip. Toe. To. Toe. To. Toe. Tip. Toe. Now let's do it again and this next time I want you to do it with us so very quietly stand up make sure you have plenty of room. And we're going to do this activity in place. You will not need to move about the room. But we're going to do this during the first and last parts of Hey Betty Martin. We're going to tip toe while singing. And then during the middle part we're going to
sway back and forth. So let's. Say. Tip toe. To Toe to toe. To. Toe. To. Toe swing swing when you both swing swings swings swing on. Tip. Toe. To. Toe. To. Toe. To. Toe. A lot. Oh that's great. Now don't sit out yet because there's another
song that is also in a form that we have learned in the name of it is about my ladies. So when we sing it I want you to hop off during the A section of the song and during the middle part clap. Say. Three. Maybe. One. We. Don't. Mind. Dun. Dun. Dun. Dun. Dun. Dun. Dun. Dun. Ha. Ha. Ha.
Don't. Know. There's some dumb luck. That's great. Now very quietly sit down. Well it's been so much fun looking at all of this pertain to art today by the way how many pictures have you got. Well I have eight over in my hurt that I've already done with these that makes eight nine lives. Terry have you noticed how well the bird counts. Yes I have noticed sure it's because I've been practicing the counting so that you told us you're talking about this. Yes. Could you please. Certainly my. Reading this so. They want my. Body back in the dark about this so they make nice with. That. Body like a dog. So
this whole thing during my dream with. The dog. This old man came rolling. Oh let's do it again this next time really have fun with it. So. It was like. So many men. Doing. This. So they come online with a body like this. So then they bring back. The dogs of those that came home. Oh I like that mystery. I have a very good idea. You know I could make a potato with numbers like words to put them on a piece of paper and go work to three.
Right. Very good. They said you're going to do that. How about giving me the rest of these paintings here. I do. Good fellows. We'll settle all this in a few minutes. We'll see you next time until then bye bye. Hey Betty Martin from making music your own book one copyright 1964 published by Silverburn that company. Used by permission. It rained a mist from traditional ballads of Virginia copyright 1969 University Press of Virginia. Used by permission. Did the balloon away from the storm in hopes of finding a place to make a safe landing. Deep down below the surface of the water in. Sydney the seal was making his way toward the safety of the island. Meanwhile the balloon has escaped the storm. Sighard the tropical island and landed safely on the sandy beach. Now let's join in the fun with Miss Terry
and her friends on melody is a good one. Now now this shot was taken when I was with B S and G circus. Oh I like that one said. Oh and I also like this one. Oh that's great. I love that picture of you playing your trumpet all. Yes I used to get a lot of applause especially when I played angel band. All Miss Terry.
Those were the days you don't suppose we could sing that song do you. Why certainly I don't know why not. Let's sing the angel band ready. To sing. There was one. There were. Two. There were three. There were four. There were. Five. There were six. Or. Seven. There were. Eight. There were. Guys. In the band. Was. That. Something for the. Song. Or. Was. That. Sunday morning. Or late morning. Oh that's a great song. We're just getting warmed up so why don't we sing it again. Ready to. Sing. There was one. There were. Two.
There were three. There were. Five. There were six. Or seven. There were eight. There were nine. And. That. Was. Then. Sunday morning Sunday morning. It. Wasn't. Sunday morning. So on Monday morning. So. Miss Terry that brings back some good memories. Well I'm glad of that. By the way I'm really curious about something Sidney. How in the world did you ever get started on your trumpet career. Well it began when I was a young strip surf and some elementary school for seals. Then later on I attended flipper high. You know I'm really gone with it there. They're from there I joined the Marine
Corps and played all of the patriotic to such as Battle Hymn of the Republic kind of like glue. My life. We all miss Terry I can't remember the words. Could you help me. It's been a long time. I'd be more than happy to. Why don't I first sing the battle hymn of the republic. Glory glory glory glory. Glory glory. All is true is marching on. Now let's review the words for Sidney. Listen there's a high chance the first phrase all the glory. Now I want you to do that with me. Ready. Chant glory glory. How do ya know. I will add the music.
Glory glory to all. Now it's your turn. See glory glory to all. Then we go to the second phrase glory glory Harlin to chat glory glory. How do ya. Now let's add the music glory glory. Saying glory glory. To. God. And the next part. Glory glory. Hardly in. Ya. Sad. Glory glory. How do ya music glory glory all sing Glory glory and honor all his truth is marching on Chad.
His truth is marching on music his too is marching on. See he is marching on all this is a great patriotic too. Now let's sing the complete song. Ready. Sing. Lol we can all be hollering. All Glory Glory to God. Glory glory. His truth is marching on. Oh let's try it again and really put a lot of energy into it. Sing Glory Glory. Glory glory to. Glory glory.
All his truth is marching on. Oh isn't that an exciting tune Sidney. Love it. And you know one reason that it is such a stirring and exciting song is because it has an even rhythm patterns and I'm going to show you what I mean. Watch as I clap the on even rhythm in this song. Goal. The goal. How do ya go. How do you go. Let me go back to his truth is marching on. Now I want you to clap the rhythm with me this next time. Don't forget to chant Hands up. Ready begin. All right go. A holiday. Yeah. All right. How do go. Grigori how do ya. Who's truth is our song. So those aren't even rhythm patterns really given an exciting feeling in this song.
MISS CAREY You know this song sounds great on the trumpet. I used to play it in the Marine Corps Band. Let's listen to it. Oh good idea. Oh. My. All that sounded just terrific. You know that trumpet can do so many different things. Why don't we listen to some of the high and low sounds that can be made on this instrument. Yes. It can also play very slow soothing melodies.
Oh. That's beautiful isn't it. Now let's listen to some sounds on this instrument. Oh that trumpet is a great sounding instrument. Sidney I bet you really enjoyed playing the Battle Hymn of the republic. I did indeed especially when everybody was marching marching.
That's a good idea Sidney. Why don't we march to the Battle Hymn of the republic. I want everyone to very quietly stand up. Make certain that you have plenty of room. Now we're going to march in place which means you're not going to march around the room you're going to stand right where you are in March as we're singing the Battle Hymn of the republic. So let's say ready sing Glory Glory. Glory glory glory glory. Is true is marching on. Hi what are you doing. Looks like you're having a lot of fun. We are we're marching to the Battle Hymn of the republic. Do I Do please sir. I would love to have you. Let's do it. Woodburning this next time. Ready.
Singing Glory Glory. Glory Glory. Glory glory. To marching on mystery unto another patriotic marching so in the name of that there are many fluids. Well why don't we sing there are many flags and while we're standing we'll go ahead and march to it. Betty. Since. There are bad. Times in many lines. There are hot dogs all over you. But there is no. Call. Right. Like our own. Of. Countries like. Stripes and it's bright stars
too. Far there is. Not any land like our own right. I'm do that so much made we do it again please. I don't know why now. Let's do it again. Ready. Say. There are bad. Nights in bad lands. There are flags all they do. But there is no. All right. Like our own Fred. All right. All. Right. Countries. Like stripes it's white stars too far there is no fly like our own. I'm sure Terry quietly sat down excuse me in the ass to mouth
off. You know these patriotic songs have such a strong and forceful style you know. Oh well I know what you're talking about. You're exactly right. They're very exciting very forceful and strong and it lends them selves to a marching type of movement. But of course we don't always march to all of the songs that we sing. And an example of that is the song Hey Betty Martin why don't we sing it now. Ready. To sing on tip toe to toe. Betty Martin so. Bad. Martin tell tell daddy part. Please be nice. Swing with me. I'll swing with you. We'll go swinging on swings so why. Swing swing
swing. They tend to toe to toe. Hey. So. Bar. To. Tip. Toe. To. Toe. Maybe not. Oh why don't we tip toe to this song. So once again I want you to very quietly stand up. And what we're going to do is tip toe during the first and last parts of the songs the section we're going to tiptoe lightly. And then during the middle part of the song the beast action we're going to swing back and forth. So let's have fun with it. Ready. To tip toe to toe. The mark. Tick tick tick. Tick tick tick tick. Tick. Tick.
My swing with the swing wheel goes swinging day. Swings so far swings so far. Swing swing vote. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick by all that's right now very quietly sit down. Oh this has been so much fun today. I'm really enjoying having all of you with us today. It's been fun looking through the album hasn't it Sydney. Yes it hasn't. Matter of fact I wanted Brummy of the bird to come over here and look at some good pictures. Walter if you'd like to take a look. Thank you very much. Leave me. Oh well that's very lovely. There was one you know when I was
younger I am not quite so happy. You know the angel band from 36 South Carolina's spirituals. Used by permission of the Shurmur incorporated. Hey Betty Martin from making music your own book one copy right 1964 published by Silverburn that company. Used by permission
