[silence] [silence] [beep] [silence] [silence] [silence] Are the good old days really gone? Hello, I'm Bill Moyers. It's true we don't have quilting bees and barn-raisings anymore but volunteerism, the best part of the good old days, still thrives in the KPTS viewing area. When people join to improve their communities, that spirit shines bright, just like it did when a citizen effort created what you now know as Channel 8. Today, KPTS continues to brighten your life. So join me in this shining endeavor and become a member now. [silence] This is Bill Moyers,
wishing a wonderful 30th anniversary to KPTS, Channel 8. [silence] [silence] I'm Bill Moyers, and I wish I could be there with you today when my friends from KPTS talk with you about our landmark series they're broadcasting this fall. I welcome every chance to tell Rotarians about how my experience as a Rotary international fellow changed my life many years ago. The series you're going to hear about today is also a life-changing experience. It's an in-depth and intimate look into the movement to improve the way we die with stories from doctors, nurses, hospice workers, families, and the dying themselves, we explore issues of comfort, control, choice, and empowerment at the end of life. Most of us know how we want to die. We imagine a peaceful death, free of pain, surrounded
by the people we love. We want spiritual and emotional support for ourselves and our loved ones But how to make sure our wishes are carried out when the time comes is the challenge. One out of every two Americans say they would rely on family and friends to carry out those wishes. But 75% of us never take the time to make those wishes known. Our series may just change that. People have been asking me, "Was it depressing reporting this story over the last two years?" The answer is no. The dying people I met taught me a lot about living. One of them you'll meet in the series was diagnosed with cancer and given only a few months to live. He made it another five years. And he told me in our interview, "If you don't expect to see spring again, and then you see it, you don't experience it as spring, you experience it as a miracle." Well, I consider every minute now to be one more miracle, including this one. Thank you for allowing me to be with you today, and thank you for your support of KPTS, your community station.
