things i mean welcome to the tradition of the aware show on tv shark and so glad you could join me as you know as black history month and boy do we have a show for you some exciting things going on right here around town are going to feel you can in all the places you can go and find events you can say our first segment will feature the national park service known as in yes it's an extraordinary local projects going on they are an oral history documentary highlighting the history of johnson beach windy beach in general chappie james's baritone and memorial gardens next one visit with mr historian himself want in silence as he amazes you with great black inventors a fascinating exhibit that chronicles some of the greatest inventions ever by african americans finally kick back and relax with the african american heritage society as they celebrate black history month in style right here on

here we're show but first let's learn more about the national park syria's cultural heritage programs especially their local project the history behind johnson beach and windy beach and joining me to do that right here in the studio to my lab we begin with joseph perry is a park ranger with npr's and of course we're joined by david ogden was within be as he's the park historian andy has to be interpreted ranger we're so bland documents because there's so much to talk about it from the start of that the national park is all about what they've been doing and especially what they've been doing for this particular product his documentary and it started airing you know where to start because i'm excited about it it's not about five o'clock so startled gulf islands national seashore is one of the three hundred and eighty seven you know so the national park system and protect all sorts of wonderful american heritage and natural areas gulf islands is a metro area but that

has a lot of cultural attachments and one of those is johnson beach of course you know part of my job is to try to produce some publications on the history of the site to show people what it's about and i found there was art historian that we didn't have much information go with pizza and that's where joe cannon and more about this well it came about that they they've said we might then have information and nod as eu chairperson for about four years the fall is that we did a lot of black history month we did projects in and i care about the hat to the winter came and actually about doing a project with other black history month this month with kevin james and we set up and then doesn't beat came about and then i check it if i can work on that and wayne and i did some things here that

that and you can pretty much tell us a little bit more maybe about the efforts that have been behind trying to do more for rosamond giants one of things that's important to note is that rosamond johnson not this was a first a skinny county residents about the way he died he died saving other people and is very aware of the action that he took for years there was this time this research was out there because their became some interest in trying to find out what has just do was because of the military attacks unquote african americans he wasn't waiting and so there was some concern that he had never really received all an honor for what he had done and saving lots of other comrades in this thinking that it would actually do military was integrated in nineteen forty six i think still it was still i was in a great you know to a robot that the society was not of course not understood i think everyone understands

to sometimes take some steps to help them out in this case they're actually helping us more than anything was just so wonderful to see the the energy that is the volvos of beyond my wildest dreams that i've been kind of tinkering with this for a couple years before joe buck that there's a lot of this and i think they come together because of the community theater just this basically what jesus about thirty seconds would you just name it's passable academy it's the national park its surface it's you know that the people who are the family names with these people who have gone on you know the all of us coming together and in doing a hard to preserve history and it also shows how how tight that community black community local is so well connected and that's the marvelous thing in itself that has made this all possible day and one night they would have had to imagine that just republicans white widow in

wonderful party african american heritage society with established officially in two thousand won their mission to promote awareness and appreciation for arts culture interest rate of african americans and they've continued that as it's their mission on and have done a wonderful job in community we're always happy to have you want to tell us some of the one of the things that you're doing in the community and one of those wonderful things as the scientists at twentieth television this is to who you are you're losing your educator and artist and enrolling wait we can do on an animal and when all this artistic ability of manifest itself though when i was in the third grade my teachers discovered that i had artistic ability and they'll begin to actually to do that with more the four seasons

teachers were a spinster their motivating them living in the profession she she encouraged me a lot the idea at a portrait of bach martin luther king right after he was assassinated those who was just crying and that was my way of expressing my feelings that who i am picture about what the king of the portrait and that was one of the first portrait that i can remember i have been drawing people like james brown and little richard and i got rid of all my heart is sailing is it okay rove very high school which was possible high school i am

i began to abandon quarters of last month appears weary and it escalated into me doing more series portraits of forced champion saints the college president and their counsel of the sport georgia and various principals and superintendents and he can't perform the escalating the image of isolation ran wild leaping hit records are very good and i understand that some of your your art here on the sets of a little bit about it and sit around it so we'll try to get as much of it is within the year about a dozen years and part of the live and i grew up in the church and part of our mission while attending church which is part of the rhythm guitar bass drums keyboards and an
