things i mean welcome to the tradition of the aware show on tv shark and so glad you could join me as you know as black history month and boy do we have a show for you some exciting things going on right here around town are going to feel you can in all the places you can go and find events you can say our first segment will feature the national park service known as in yes it's an extraordinary local projects going on they are an oral history documentary highlighting the history of johnson beach windy beach in general chappie james's baritone and memorial gardens next one visit with mr historian himself want in silence as he amazes you with great black inventors a fascinating exhibit that chronicles some of the greatest inventions ever by african americans finally kick back and relax with the african american heritage society as they celebrate black history month in style right here on
here we're show but first let's learn more about the national park syria's cultural heritage programs especially their local project the history behind johnson beach and windy beach and joining me to do that right here in the studio to my lab we begin with joseph perry is a park ranger with npr's and of course we're joined by david ogden was within be as he's the park historian andy has to be interpreted ranger we're so bland documents because there's so much to talk about it from the start of that the national park is all about what they've been doing and especially what they've been doing for this particular product his documentary and it started airing you know where to start because i'm excited about it it's not about five o'clock so startled gulf islands national seashore is one of the three hundred and eighty seven you know so the national park system and protect all sorts of wonderful american heritage and natural areas gulf islands is a metro area but that
has a lot of cultural attachments and one of those is johnson beach of course you know part of my job is to try to produce some publications on the history of the site to show people what it's about and i found there was art historian that we didn't have much information go with pizza and that's where joe cannon and more about this well it came about that they they've said we might then have information and nod as eu chairperson for about four years the fall is that we did a lot of black history month we did projects in and i care about the hat to the winter came and actually about doing a project with other black history month this month with kevin james and we set up and then doesn't beat came about and then i check it if i can work on that and wayne and i did some things here that
we would that i got started immense about a pitcher role as mother now is that just between the nineteen sixties and on all that long ago yeah we know back in the sixties and then just like spock live there was then that there was no because of light in the mr pat mahoney who doesn't vinton that that was then so her friend my brothers are that these big off and then mixing mr rosenbaum with harnick about women i met with an assembly and david and i guess you're saying basically that you're doing history that's where thing with a part they knew you had black images of beaches named after waxman didn't have any real history one thing is though to remember is the island's national seashore has been a you know the national park system since nineteen seventy one and wall that seems like a long time ago relatively young
in terms of our areas and we have twelve different units have them in mississippi is over a number of different needs for the research and what was driving at first what was already somewhat known the civil war history of drama of this is coming along and i have a number of them incidents in the past the fourth rebuild a slave laborer now you know there's a famous incident eighteen forties thomas walker having accused the slaves doing and we have a few like that but we didn't have anything to bring it up to the present and my division chief bill bishop was asked me for images and reasonable haven't and there's cars we do not have any joe and i came through the entrance station one day i'm chatting with joe biden is ago a picture and mom them you like he's from the area and there's no work in the same division and when i found out he had local connections and then his enthusiasm picked up by got the authorization that ok the
project and essentially handed it to joe's been running or because he has a community connections and the production expertise virtually impossible rubin made julia as you know is that they just opened their own studio and got their worst possible this very good fortune allowed us to come and say whatever you want to do you think he gives a quick and we even had a question for the field that allow us to use a computer until it it's wonder at technical support to their valuable because of communities coming together now more vets opportunities should say to learn more about at american history right here in pensacola enter beaches and this particular be sure even talking about johnson beach is named after osama johnson real that you tell us more about him ron johnson ever had to get us off the show a picture while talking back in and then our viewers can get a chance to actually see the face behind the story reverend johnson was he was born here and is calling and not affect the house that he grew up
with and is still there and with his busy they're the big juicy m is actually come off the well of his mother's house he allowed me to take the pitch of the law to do it and i mean there's been a house of the milli vanilli had a great opportunity and so it was a powerful about johnson didn't just beat in nineteen fifty two the county commissioners son is more than just be happy that in seventeen in nineteen fifty in the korean war ii was of reflected that actually do the first to die ms collins in the area used to be and they scoot right in his column on the beach was a sudden end up or i was wrestling is only buy beats coastal beaches hinges call it you can only go to have in the
neighborhood you love of the beach is because as co written somewhere they love making racial tensions going on that time and doesn't beat was designated as it before as of it opened fire and in nineteen seventy one the national park elizabeth became an official national park the state of the senate that this that or the national public a coven it took over and it became a national park and at the time it was where this on they put aside this as a bold one does we talk about a lot of us there's a bitter there with the sun as it is the role of women in the sparrows monday and laurie as a fake scary story behind rosen month when i can understand is that he was a young man who at the age of fifteen and decided that he wanted to go in and fight in this war and support his mother it's the first mini fridge join was before the war started so that had a lot to
do with the i suspect lack of opportunity and local air compared to it's still an avenue for many people the limited opportunities at home go to the military it was very clear to the end and i understand that you have an opportunity in this this project that you've been doing the talking to his mother is that allowed me to come into their lives they're being very shocking eighties late eighties and then we should we can win and when i interviewed her and it turns on about to talk about it so it wasn't an actual is its hebrew ago at the age of fifteen right and the recruiter they want the number two she sighed and she said i'm not at least another thing she said was that if you don't sign who you said you've only finished she wanted him to go with her blessing right to do that so there was that was very interesting the way came about and he was actually he rated a few months in the seventeenth birthday
we look at the history of all the imitation i didn't have a dime steven davis a lot of russian speakers and that's a busy one and so here near where shall we want to go ahead and show our viewers a brief interview that you had with rosa munch on as mother is alice johnson a member so graciously am appreciative to be able to show this you can take a look and listen and go god help me the way anyway you there are are you can name your neighbor for the hour but again the vote wrong and the month granted that that i can call ended the blank our work that don't cost and the ruined them on
mr ard they thought i could offer that's great and drove the math on growth you mr love over by hitler on rent a lot of our but not have been chronically within a month now but if aig that the warning given up only about thank you ari go away crowley of going not then it's going to go on that long been on what the
road ain't got to recruit now they have that road and then we believe eleven am alone on the anti than me now i would you know go out around him going to the government that want to do that that they're going to recruit about a hearing about but it clear though they're not know it kind of it really about a tent without being the rule out of a lot of the pride of a thug image but not going back the way they renew your family when in that anywhere think you really really lovely lady talking about
her son was among johnson's house johnson i'm talking about the fact that her son rosa meaghan johnson decided he wanted to join the military help his family he gave him the blessings he went on two years later he parishes in the korean war and now we sit here pretty much talk about the history of a beach has been named after him for years and the fact that it has been now there's a monument now has been very record since nineteen seventy three you guys tell me the history on this both former director than seventy three and an atmosphere sleep then it's weird and then we got another one and then we have another one just a few years back is dedicated which is that johnson okay and that's the one we want to show our viewers now that they can get a chance at that they have already visited johnson beach and they go out and see this monument and they can see what avalon johnson is the spirit is still pretty much on the beach we can show that they'll give it a chance to see
that and you can pretty much tell us a little bit more maybe about the efforts that have been behind trying to do more for rosamond giants one of things that's important to note is that rosamond johnson not this was a first a skinny county residents about the way he died he died saving other people and is very aware of the action that he took for years there was this time this research was out there because their became some interest in trying to find out what has just do was because of the military attacks unquote african americans he wasn't waiting and so there was some concern that he had never really received all an honor for what he had done and saving lots of other comrades in this thinking that it would actually do military was integrated in nineteen forty six i think still it was still i was in a great you know to a robot that the society was not of course not understood i think everyone understands
that and so he has finally been honored airs in the family has a couple of theories that will memorialize that malaria doesn't that beach bondage you haven't been out there hugo chaves well far does it just talking here and see the footage that they really thought about it you know i can he was actually but that really that he was in saigon at the rescue not to say that life and he saved my life you know and we went back to save another that's when he was killed on the second time around and mr stith you know that you shot footage at that old footage of shell oil one man show now and that this is possibly tear this is where everybody came the lead time this is like same area this was a lengthy tampa bay is the start of a
bluesy it now because the only thing this is only structure there that some of the projects that we know that you are working on as well and i understand what's in the other beaches windy beach was helpful about that history or when did beaches is obese the other bees that will actually lose a camera baby to buy baby to nineteen forty eight and the mother will win good sir richard and that now was seized the father the mother put that is my baby to ever than forty eight actual before it doesn't ignite if the tools of the selection at the right and then now it you know it was the night that the property sits at eighty one as a county marvelous and they had forty acres including waterfront properties of our differences when baby truth privately owned and they took it upon themselves to put it all together this involves a family operations of marbles this
is very informative and actually the lacrosse i'm going to be right across my big feet is just be watching this is is it's amazing how history is so close together and i mean because it was no other areas must go to the levy to those advantages that when a cabinet that they had this email that they've boycotted matches of all i'm out on the beach and what it was about and i think there's one feature word the you know there were there was there were destroyed the hurricane and that's when the battle of the fjord cry cry and then there's the four star general weariness coli and revival that became if you don't know even live under a rock here is all i can say well self report for some people who may be just coming to the area may not know who captain james is that it was a serious thought why don't know it was a number right here in pensacola
and i ever met him he was in that image come home his rebel rebel forces and they have the site where he was brought home with him from reading a weapon he's not one of the kings of the house this debt that's there stands is where he was born and next up to that when the park is used to be the schoolhouse where his mother thought they were an actor i would then it's proven so those would be possible that given that so many of the commission are just part of life is what project are so beautiful or all come together as this amazing them on that even though this area is that is fifty five minutes and you know when you grow up being involved in things like the score will have a lot of like this there's a lot of that and i'm just happy to be able to document them and before that
we had some video with a well thumbed jackie james's first that's how his gut the minor tussle over the cape the first steps an event that prevents the fact that somethings who have legal dispute in the second hour we talk about the best the house of the sea and no less a house in waterways and the steps you see with interest that actually september first event that enters into their houses weren't there as the weather say write it with him and his government to say second bridge that opened her and five we respect for the schoolhouse that they have a better than we joke about love but anyway we pulled about to date and he's also put together i remember at that we are worthy of a house where they can put in the house and that was the finisher mr o'connor house to this day one of good buddies they are
thousands still on the construction the city has really done a good job in it and ice and beautiful park i mean it's really too long look at it now and i can look like the mine remember how it was really been upgraded them and brought back to a rental storage and that it's really great opportunity to really documented here and i guess it's why you're so excited about the spot because you had a chance to dive back into some history here about a general patton james whale and so just and both work for him in all of the next week the defense like that that is actually the best friend of rove will sustain and one k over unpaid reynolds' husband is brutal that's one thing i'm having this insight job of the thing about the whole
thing away in nevada and it's exciting to be able to put it together and going to the national parks have to be to have a knockout without them in the show though with phil his own life apart he was aware of what's going on right here word that there's so many good things that happened is not only are we saving some history one of the great ballets of oral histories to get people's memories often don't realize how important those are an homage historian so i've been delving into the things in the past but for it to be relevant of all economic connection to the present and another aspect of the park service is trying to work on that reaching out to her community making more contact because the park service is well known internationally we have visitors from all over the country and many of our own neighbors don't realize that we are there and we belong to public land he's out there to enjoy it but you've got
to sometimes take some steps to help them out in this case they're actually helping us more than anything was just so wonderful to see the the energy that is the volvos of beyond my wildest dreams that i've been kind of tinkering with this for a couple years before joe buck that there's a lot of this and i think they come together because of the community theater just this basically what jesus about thirty seconds would you just name it's passable academy it's the national park its surface it's you know that the people who are the family names with these people who have gone on you know the all of us coming together and in doing a hard to preserve history and it also shows how how tight that community black community local is so well connected and that's the marvelous thing in itself that has made this all possible day and one night they would have had to imagine that just republicans white widow in
the book about the movie with the recognition that inherent mcveigh jonathan's came together just for just for this project it has been recited a national party is the biblical truth is that you're from just felt like this is for them and so this really are beautiful song despite that last night they have it ready for the project we can archive that beautiful song as though one loses leg out the last time with that you know the journalistic figure they're having at one of the various occasions around them via where probably over the years it certainly every time we hear his native your name really we know that we're in for a real treat so well of course we're going to get an opportunity to hear that and what an appropriate title for that all was well lear's life of love of i mean when he came over the state where we want it
was is that what would have you gave his life what are the surprises in these though i know just descriptions and this awful stuff and you give him on this excited about this episode dispensed at the mexican restaurant you know this is i guess somebody would say this is the personification of the american humor do things and that's one of the reasons why this is so fitting and closing are there some comments it like to make on behalf of the national park service that will include syrian behalf the national park service so important for the american people know that we're there for your enjoyment and for the educational possibilities on the record well one of the things about the islands that we have some aspects of all that wonderful natural areas of standing historically areas and produced features in the world and it's all part of this huge network all over the country three hundred and eighty seven a real american treasure it's a great honor to work for the organization there didn't know you all have many many many more things you could talk about
some of those on the web sites of your other places that you have your destination in that sort of thing which certainly appreciate you coming out though it's about that and i understand you also i was like if you live here and in the mainland of the world's first attack against that that they came with one of these big apple as this novel and he thinks a lot more than that that's one of them a twenty second until two pm may larval borders thank you it's a little bit about what's going on the in around town and get to our next segment have an opportunity to talk with some of the other visitors that we have here on our program highlighting african americans turned black history month and up next we will be talking with our african american inventors great african americans will be introducing you to some of them said
you know what this is so glad that he stuck around for the aware show because it just keeps getting better and better and better as we celebrate black history month to celebrate now by talking a little bit about the arm he'd stop finds ansari beyond that there's no traffic lights we should be talking about generators ranch is the us we have mass gas mask and a whole lot more all these things have in common well they were all do live from famous african american inventors and we have a collection of bills here are set orient and here to tell us more about these inventors as a historian and collector himself mr william ballots and welcome to our show there are some folks have already been introduced here they are we know who you are and what you are what you do and how you could attribute sharing some of your fines are artifacts with him but for those of of us who may have not had the pleasure of meeting you and fight and all the wonderful
things that you have to offer for creditor here tell us about some of these things and why you do what you do you collect them american artifacts then no mommy come from puerto rico but the wrinkle film proof that his boy i didn't know anything about back his bowel but the use of all when i moved to postpone a comically week we became iconic that she was like making like my mother she was at the time and she was waiting to as a member of that that avenue baptist church where that the plane i think the thing with your money for in the early in the nineteen fifties into what's involved and they're both went up into new roof apart from the week we met them back on it that he's not looking label on this thing or that he's in a little bit sicker
than two years oh oh you know one thing when i wanted to do you know that ethan hawke in that moment it enters the valley northerners my heart he passed away a few years ago reading then booth ocean who like the african american art and this is what i have now another legacy in both set to continue to tell others about that there it gets like this is it only boy and vermouth is something that i do there's the bo diddley i mean well thank god i really that i thought i'd try to learn more and they pop back as the police said very very thin yeah it's it's often said it's added it's not fought every day not just the view is during one particular lower manhattan and in a new echo that yes
tell us about some of your fines i mean we had met on some of the things that you have collected but a little bit about that what about this light filled with people live the life they usually don't know what anybody's about it is the way you walk i like that and then an automatic with the chopping was invent that you know at a nineties baby and i believe that the use of my hands ain't and that is that this is the material that they think that the budget by a giant lead in all you can get a local but in about thirty percent of wild yet to invent the bird was not that we knew who
is the bronze but singing the guys that it doesn't happen again and we have some other things here we have a switch mostly in baghdad figure out what that must not the last was invented by nathan ball gown is the thing at the top of like running but there was i think that that must be a night in a corner of the state and then became death last night and the night thing what if we ever slip up and from the top of life is threatened by phone with you is best invention was the best performing with jim an event that the queen was thinking we're in you know white riot on that one a blog on a bad rap without the third of the heap
would that we wound up of the beloved for eight years there and then the slate group of the thorne theater at the the only african american no red line for here while you knew more about what a brilliantly yes as you probably hear a lot more about him associated with the traffic light you know we really don't know that he's responsible for some of these other great and yes yes ok we have a generator years well what is not really generated this everyone it's this is the air brakes it's not very effective and that is a great now i got these air break from the fighting which is not the world maintain with the usual of that the average was invented by brain drain but he wants
her back in the main people whom the point in cars we invented it before you are simply be that rural know if you thought that and then this but you've been fought by the youth and now you has been recovered from like that was born in faith that anyone of another and to us the event that the bowery about the art of actually invent the oversight now and we're going to go in the result now the negro as he bent this only thing is that the growth here it would be great that was having some help from a very simple chord rock and he won both of our slogans they're an african american you know somebody's life like that one of those people who was one of the grain has been through
and yeah within the events of the last years most of it involves you it was not enough to wrap an american overseas now that's something or you know a jury look at this as a the range of people you know if i ask who invented the foam finger not when people who didn't that that would be a really good question at the vatican bank that by the first african american on the way down there we get pretty heavy ms hendrickson everywhere and he couldn't get invaded by an african american that just a lot of those anyway because of republican heavyweight boxer and what about simple a nineteen twenty
novel was right now with a white woman and was in jail while he was in jail it made it was something i dont know where the west where it goes something an event that they're ranging inquiry rings is what is that battle ms laurie from the nineteen thirties up a battle by was invented by him that really people know that we can bring all of your five yard facts are collections nothing on here but that we want to bring the samples whether viewers know the gears of gori after american and that is that there are sometimes they get lost and we'll talk about them this much tells us about your other fines and an african american inventors well i have always eat by hal thanks arun an item on the range a thing hundred and thirty i think that their orbits one that i have is the old
german machine was invented in anything in fits a little of the name of the inventor with inventing a thing at six in that one the one that i have at three of that i'm your local joke on the field that day back of that iran is the ap at the seeds and also gave you the ip number the growth or my or my counterparts that meant the average out the number of everything i have i do not lie through this something the bottom of the oven ok amazing idea only saved and right now on television with a rifle is this flat wrong things and in a moment it was interesting find on leave me went what the most interesting thing that you come across as an african american and that the nominee at all these are certainly interesting the
goal is that when you discovered off african american discovered this invented this is or any particular item that if you if you did that when you're finding in electing it wasn't really a great invention it was to discover it wasn't as grover by that is correct and for me a bow was something so great because so many people benefit from that so many people believe because of the conflicts that it right before i thought there's something bible every day i grow people like i like to improve my knowledge and i just make a connection with people and i'd be watching the rover and will commit the end this hour of things about him how we die that is edward blum oh and i i went with
them peacefully nevada with you throw throw it wasn't okay dr charles not just in america understand that they're he ended up me watching a car accident that perhaps his life could've been spared had the hospital except in him and then a blood transfusion on him the very thing that he invented the best versus board of other less than a civil war of our focus right about what i meant as a slave is the message that i would never say something and not on the person like me would sit and has written books on her recently and there's a big thing people say that in high enough to a credit and they can but they're white house but it's there and he died in one of the hospital and he was not a militant group of you about and it was aligned with that ok
they re word correctly who was a neighbor in the white house but ok and about the wide not welcome here and they are bears saved his life and they who he was your job with broken that i bought forty five minutes later ok that's thirteen or die hit your story he died of injuries that they could not save his life who sustained some serious injuries is why i'm glad you dispel that made your chorus of the aware show but now just now you basically go wherever you collect all these great fights from african american inventors and then you take this knowledge and there are artifacts into our schools and other functions that you can go out and tell others about and primarily this activity is i guess accelerator in back of us a kite is my lap only building that
i work in one of those birds that because this is something that we put you know more about than we kids were i broke loose with some kind of presentation not only boom boom goes for weeks and not toward what he and it is it's something that anyone should know but how we're going to raise that the child would have believed you care about the chose clinton there's a moment i love we know each other respect each other to know about their chosen nation so both it's out there the brutal politics and so i'm sure iraq and on how to get into the schools you around all yes it decimated the update with it the leg by the way all right and we're going to work more visibly appears within the right wing who has been a very frightened of this dream of this big
event well the school and also for the average live in the community and also weighed in on the book i think is going to be things in about three months and it is there that i can get a grant or something and that the result of that who knows how that thing he's on who that we certainly hope you get the help and the support it you're glad that tout the community is out embracing this and that you're here and sharing this with us is the great that we took off on my head a fox yes lord of war posada fights and one event is going to be about invention and you know it was not just the elephant about about the caribbean as a spot in the country and often here because past neighbors' by having the cut in the end one who uses the you know the former
gold mine and that the press conference asked make great was in some of puerto rico are very a brush you're right there in that nato's probably only history right here well thank you so much for joining us here we are we are still hearing there are finds with us and letting us know that we have some great history here thanks to the budget work to power it really wasn't just words ends from the reverend jerome gary and dow was a comeback in the mortgage business the issues than it is in african american art by one of el loco artist who has as display at the african american heritage society as we continue to celebrate african american history it on the election the secure center of the aware show where talk a little bit about african american art that scientist they display at the african american heritage society been one of the vocal artist who's been featured in some of his absolutely extraordinary art that he cares
only introducing you to him just a little bit but a little bit more about town the african american heritage society and what they do joining us here in the studio is ms angel murphy who is an african american heritage society volunteer doing if you're forty or where shall show becomes more about the society and what they do if you so much for joining us and then we have martial that way who is an artist and art is and will and of course here at the warning our lovely aware said tonight as some of his paintings were so happy that so we can have you on the show and to possessed of your paintings it's on display at the african american heritage society downtown and again now by talking a little bit about what's going on with the african american artists it can't say enough good thing about it and the guys do a lot of wonderful things in pensacola nearly one of them is now bringing in local parties to show off the displaced and there were
us government in february and i just couldn't be doing a ocho or are six local artist and he's an early visual artists we do have a couple artists that do sculpture part of the cost of the things i am so the things that he often american society while so the prison on the ascent of dance theatre music and as well as a visual arts rapping dr cho on february twenty eight at six o'clock pm that's a fight and the loss of you have a reception for the artist and so we look forward to the community coming out to support a local artist sedaris that will be representing will beat marshall here on eileen gates who is a commercial artist his brother bobby gates on angeles are two and they were like you know and she is going to be a gradual and does that reporter have great
wonderful party african american heritage society with established officially in two thousand won their mission to promote awareness and appreciation for arts culture interest rate of african americans and they've continued that as it's their mission on and have done a wonderful job in community we're always happy to have you want to tell us some of the one of the things that you're doing in the community and one of those wonderful things as the scientists at twentieth television this is to who you are you're losing your educator and artist and enrolling wait we can do on an animal and when all this artistic ability of manifest itself though when i was in the third grade my teachers discovered that i had artistic ability and they'll begin to actually to do that with more the four seasons
teachers were a spinster their motivating them living in the profession she she encouraged me a lot the idea at a portrait of bach martin luther king right after he was assassinated those who was just crying and that was my way of expressing my feelings that who i am picture about what the king of the portrait and that was one of the first portrait that i can remember i have been drawing people like james brown and little richard and i got rid of all my heart is sailing is it okay rove very high school which was possible high school i am
i began to abandon quarters of last month appears weary and it escalated into me doing more series portraits of forced champion saints the college president and their counsel of the sport georgia and various principals and superintendents and he can't perform the escalating the image of isolation ran wild leaping hit records are very good and i understand that some of your your art here on the sets of a little bit about it and sit around it so we'll try to get as much of it is within the year about a dozen years and part of the live and i grew up in the church and part of our mission while attending church which is part of the rhythm guitar bass drums keyboards and an
endowment we would have services where yelling don't have the evidence and the people will come in with crutches and canes and while in the air and they will be remembered and now they really after that another church this is one of many of the series about the fictional character oh they their lives is in the fall of these injured and this was the bishop of bishop's new and rather than everyone thinks i hadn't been unknowable about it
you know no i haven't that say no like that that is so that when and then it's like jealousy is something that it's one of a mild white shouldered this year is like me sometimes to india where should that one that when your very own reflection of the eyes of an artist by the name of edvard munch the screamer and the lookout for that you see in the middle of an innovative things and these grainy is the same character that ever had that much and what i got gave a different background more varied
