Description
Series Description
"'Bridges' gives conservatives a regularly-scheduled forum on public radio to discuss the great issues of the day with host Larry Josephson, a neo-liberal (one who's been mugged). As the tectonic plates of ideology shift underneath our society, 'Bridges' aims to forge a new consensus on the country's most critical fault-line issues. Topics range from foreign policy (should we be the world's policeman in Haiti or Bosnia') to the role of government (what is the proper balance between laissez-faire capitalism and New Deal-style interventionism') to personal morality (are we losing a common set of values') and state support of the arts. Programs thus far have included interviews with Charles Murray, William Kristol, Ralph Reed, Mario Vargas Llosa, Arianna Huffington, James Q. Wilson, Norman Podhoretz, Robert Bartley and speeches by Justice Clarence Thomas, Jeane Kirkpatrick, and William Bennett. 'Bridges' is heard on 66 public radio stations nationwide, and is funded in part by The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. "We have chosen to submit out interview with Shelby Steele because of its unusual introspection and candor on one of the most sensitive issues facing our country: race. Steele, the author of 'The Content of Our Character: a New Vision of Race in America,' believes that America's racial dialogue is corrupt and dishonest, driven by the need for racial innocence rather than then search for real solutions to urgent social problems. Steele thinks that self-doubt, more than overt racism, is blocking the economic advancement of blacks. He argues that affirmative action policies have only further stigmatized blacks, and kept them psychologically dependent on the actions of whites. Josephson, for his part, examines his own ambivalences about the current civil rights agenda. He reveals his fears of black crime, and his resentment over his daughter's rejection from UC Berkeley, his alma mater, because she was not in the right racial category (i.e. she was white). While most ideological debates in the media are predictable, dogmatic and unyielding, this interviews demonstrates what sets 'Bridges' apart. Even by public radio standards, it is exceedingly rare to find such extended, complex, personal and free-ranging dialogue across the ideological divide."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
