International Dawn Chorus Day
Written by Mark Bramhill
This is BirdNote.
The first Sunday of May is International Dawn Chorus Day, a day to appreciate the beauty of birds’ dawn songs. Each morning, right as the sun begins to rise, birds sing forth in a symphony of song.
[Dawn Song] ML516838 Marsh Dawn North Dakota
The timing of these early morning concerts may be related to the weather. Less atmospheric turbulence means birds’ songs travel through their habitat with more consistency and clarity. And so, like clockwork, the birds sing:
[Dawn Song] NatureSFX096 Wetland Lake Early Morning
Dawn Chorus Day began as a small event in Birmingham, England in the 1980s and has grown to be a worldwide celebration of birdsong. You can join in wherever you are by listening to the singers in your neighborhood. Just make sure you get up nice and early!
[Dawn Song] “Riot of Music” Mississippi River at Dawn
