You know a moment is this a Western New York Public Broadcasting you know what minute we will be broadcasting from our new home in downtown Buffalo. It is these with a mixture of excitement and this challenge that we prepared to sign off from our long time location here at 23 North Street. This building is a building built in the late eighteen hundreds as a private home has housed radio stations for approximately 60 years. W E R was located here in about 1934 and W. TBR Af-Am came along several decades later. The stations now. W O N E T. AM and FM one acquired by western New York Public Broadcasting and have been serving listeners as public stations ever since. We all miss this old building or is it this old house. It holds and made me wish away grandma's this old
house. But we also await with great anticipation. The first words from our new state of the art facility downtown so. Goodbye from your street and hello to my colleague Tom Crann and w any control at the western New York Public Broadcasting headquarters downtown. And hello to you Stratton Rawson from downtown Buffalo from our brand new center horizons Plaza ninety four point five is w ne TFM Buffalo eighty nine point seven is W. NJ Jamestown I'm more than happy to be here for this auspicious occasion. At 11 o'clock on Saturday evening Saturday the 23rd of October we're going to consecrate this house in just a moment the way we consecrated the 23 North Street house with the sounds of Beethoven and classical music as we did on the morning of April 18th 977 at seven o'clock in the morning we've been with you ever since and we've been happy to do that. We've had an expression 23 North Street and I'm sure it
184 Barton Street for well as long as I remember which is five years now that well in the new building that will be well in the new building. And at this moment we don't have to say that anymore because we are in the new building. And joining me tonight are President Mike Collins and a vice president for broadcasting Dick Daly. Gentlemen it's a it's an honor to be here with you. It's a wonderful time. When this whole process started some eight or nine years ago and the board of trustees of zation said that we really couldn't put we needed to expand and we really couldn't afford to put any more money into the existing locations that we had and look for an existing building where we could begin to expand our broadcast operations to serve the people of western New York and southern Ontario and found that it was impossible to find something for our special needs and also did a study and found that it would cost us about 120 percent more to rehab a building and possibly in the wrong
location than to do it new and we were very fortunate through the cooperation of the city of Buffalo to get this very fine property in downtown Buffalo. And this is been the culmination of a lot of effort on the part of a lot of people. And what I really want to say tonight to those who are listening is a big thank you. There are 5000 approximately 5000 members of public broadcasting western New York Public Broadcasting and foundations and corporations in this region. That's western New York and southern Ontario who contributed in addition to operating dollars have contributed capital gifts additional capital gifts to make this a reality. And that to me is a significant. Stamp of approval. What we're doing and I think it's a real commitment on the part of this board. The board of trustees of our organization to say that that this organization is here to stay that it
believes in what it is doing it very strongly that what it is doing is the right kind of thing and that it's happy to provide service we are after all a service organization. And I am just so thrilled. This is these are the first words that this will be the first music the first broadcasting from this from this new broadcast center and a little bit later this evening I guess around midnight we'll be switching over. And tomorrow night channel 17 and 23 switch off from their location the Barton Street and open up on Monday morning from this location. And we intend to make this. Place in a home not just for public broadcasting but a place for the entire community to enjoy. We've already scheduled a meeting of various other nonprofit boards of trustees in our board room. We've already scheduled other organizations to be playing here and I know that you'll probably be very interested to hear that we're going to have a full orchestra concert and as a studio
the Orchard Park Symphony Orchestra under the under the leadership of our good friend Joe insense who founded the orchestra has been conducting it for forty five years. He had a hall named after him the other night in Orchard Park and they're going to be here to perform their forty fifth anniversary concert in the spring in April. And we're so much looking forward to this. So those are the kinds of things that we're not going to do in this new facility and the whole word is you we're here to serve we're not here to build palaces or memorials or testimonials to ourselves we're here to serve and that's what this building is all about it's here to provide better service for the people of our community. Just so delighted that it's finally actually longer than I wanted to say. It's obviously been the culmination of a long held dream for Mike and for others who've been with the company for years but just to amplify a bit on what Mike's already said. We'll be working here and we're thrilled
about. It is truly a state of the art facility. But the real point is to use it to make great radio a great television for our viewers and our listeners. I know the staff is committed to doing that. Let's make some of that music right now. I think we should all leave it up to certain level Mariner and the Academy of St. Martin Field's horizons Plaza WME DMW N.J. we're going to consecrate our house our new house and your new house with some Beethoven. All right all right. There's been that very delicious grasp you get here. Thank you very much. Great pleasure to be here. In our new home Horizons Plaza these are your classical music stations ninety four point five FM Buffalo eighty nine point
