THE KOSCIUSZKO FOUNDATION Promoting Educational and Cultural Exchanges and Relations Between the United States and Poland Since 1925 THE MUSIC GALLERY Hosted by JOHN SCHAEFER Live Broadcast over WNYC-FM 93.9 PAWEL KNAPIK, Double Bass Anna Kijanowska, Piano TUESDAY, May 19, 1998 at 12 Noon The Double Bass: From the Baroque to the Present Henry Eccles (1670-1742) Cello Sonata in A minor : Largo Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) Concerto No. 2 in D Major for Double Bass (Allegro moderato) Fryderyk Chopin (T810-1849) Mazurka in C-sharp Minor, Op. 50, No. 3 Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Alborada del grazioso Serge Koussevitzky (1874-1951) Concerto in F-sharp Minor for Double Bass (Op. 3: Allegro) Daniel van Goens Scherzo for Cello, Op. 12 (transcribed for double bass by Pawel Knapik) Double bassist PAWEL KNAPIK was born in Wroclaw, Poland, and originally intended to become a physicist. In his late teens, however, his love of music asserted itself and he began to study double bass, quickly establishing his reputation as a prize winner in regional competitions. Knapik studied at the Lipinski Academy of Music in Wroclaw, completing the five-year program in only three, and graduating summa cum laude. He is the first recipient of the Arthur and Halina Rudzinski Scholarship in Orchestral Studies, awarded by the Kosciuszko Foundation, and is currently pursuing post-graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music. 26 years old, he has made numerous radio and television experiences and performed in the United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Luxemburg Germany, the Czech Republic, and throughout Poland. ANNA KIJANOWSKA is a scholarship student at the Manhattan School of Music.
