- Baby and Me starring Joyce Indig. This is a story for adults but it concerns an unborn child. Laura meets Bill. She's a sales girl and he's a Merchant Marine. They get married. He ships out. Indig sings "You Don't Know What Love Is" written by Gene de Paul and Don Raye. Ten days after he left, she read a story in the paper that the ship he was on went down. She's pregnant and he comes back to tell her the truth. He wasn't allowed on the ship because he had syphilis. Doctor tells her that if the mother is treated in the first four months, the baby can be born healthy. She gives birth to a healthy boy and reconciles with the Bill. Indig sings "Summertime" by George Gershwin. Starring Joyce Indig, Lawson Zerby. Script by Ben Kagan. Music by Tony Burrell Trio. Directed by Frank Papp. Supervisor - Erik Barnouw. - Side two: The Ballad of the Man of Steel starring Red Foley. Red Foley sings a cautionary ballad about Joe Bullard (the man of steel), a giant of amazing strength who contracts a venereal disease (syphilis) and dies. Moral of the story is it doesn't matter how physically strong you are, syphilis can still kill you. If you are in doubt about your health, get checked by a doctor. An estimated 3 million Americans were infected with syphilis without knowing it. Neither any major network nor Hollywood would even touch the subject. The V.D. Radio Project is a series of recorded programs for distribution to stations all over the United States to bring the subject of syphilis into the open. Its purpose was to make clear to the listener the patterns of syphilis and it was hoped that anyone who suspected they were infected would come forward and get treated.
