The sister almost broke for the northeast Ohio Jazz Society. Who is the center. Of the room. It's not Donna Washington Sarah Vaughn or Nancy Wilson. In fact this center is not a woman. It is Jimmy Scott a native Playboy that or became an overnight sensation and was nominated for a Grammy after struggling for almost half a century. And. Once you get past the gender shock and listen you realize that little Jimmy Scott is not only a ballad stylist but a true jazz singer who uses his unusual voice
almost like a saxophone. Most jazz bands even in Cleveland had never heard of Little Jimmy Scott until his 1992 album for Sire Records was nominated for a Grammy. In the late 1940s Jimmy Scott was singing in Cleveland even jammed with Charlie Parker at the old Majestic Hotel Eddie's 50 persons Onil. Gotten up late on and went to New York seeking fame and fortune. He sang with a want to have an orchestra made a record called everybody somebodies. Ironically about decades of NEA with Leinil happened drug history did not carry Jimmy Scott's
name the label judge simply vocal with the orchestra. Hampton was apparently thinking the public would think he had a new girl singer performing the song written by his wife and band manager glad attempt at a Jimmy Scott singing began to influence young singers like Nancy Wilson and Marvin Gaye. So how I see my. Mother. Yes Jimmy's got continued singing in New York and recorded for Savoy and Ruth records and in the summer of 1960 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem he stole the show which included Ray Charles on the coasters singing a song called Sometimes I feel like a
motherless child. I love me. From Ray Charles was on Prost was Scott's performance that he signed on to a record contract for his tangerine record label was Charles backing him on piano. Scott made an album called falling in love is wonderful. But Scott's big break in 1963 fell apart when Savoy Records went to court and convince a judge that Scott was still under contract to Savoy. The judge ordered the Scots album with Charles B pulled off the market giving up hope that he would become a nationally known singer. Scott came home to Cleveland. He sang in a few clubs here and worked in the shipping room at the old Sheraton Hotel and even did a little free singing for senior citizens at nursing homes.
In 1969 Scott got another chance to return to New York and recorded another album this time for Atlantic Records. It included pianist Ray Bryant bass player Richard Davis drummer Billy Cobham and tenor saxophonist Frank Wess. But once again Jimmy Scott run into little problems. Savoy Records heard about the Atlantic album and threaten to sue again. Again a Scot album was taken off the market. Despite the little problems. Atlantic recorded Scott again in 1972. An album called The Source was Junior Manson Ron Carter and included a song that had been popularized almost 20 years earlier by the four freshman. Day by day.
See. Unlike the hard ones and live under Jimmy Scott John Day by day. And if your date's almost I can I was only slow praising us. Yeah. My dad. Was. More was given up. Because of the continuing little problems over on drugs that record budget his God was not released by Atlantic Records for more than 20 years. Now fast forward to 1991 a man who would come so close to stardom but never
quite made it. Sang at the funeral of rock artist rock pumice Sime or stein of Sire Records was impressed and son Scott to a long term contract. This time it was let.
