Description
Episode Description
A polistes wasp nest with its many busy inhabitants and a mourning dove who feeds her young with "pigeon milk" (formed by a disintegration of the fatty lining of the dove's stomach) are feature on Backyard Safari. How it Began shows the growth of railroads from early horse-drawn cars to modern high-speed trains and discusses the part they played in the growth of our country. On Tell Me Why, Bobby rushes in to rescue Betty from a dragon (Keith Page in disguise). In the excitement, he trips over his own sword and bumps his "crazy bone" - leading to an explanation by David Lange as to what the "crazy bone" is and how knowledge of its nature can be used in Judo. Backyard Safari was produced by KETC, St. Louis, and features Murl Deusing and his children Diane, Drusilla, Dorothy and Donald. Through the use of film footage and lecture demonstrations Deusing proves that animals, birds, and insects found in ordinary neighborhood habitats are as unusual and exciting as the larger, more exotic species found in faraway lands. Mr. Deusing is no stranger to children or other forms of wild life. He has specialized in zoology since his university days, and is perhaps best known as a photographer of wild life for Walt Disney's nature films. He has also pioneered work in the production of film and television programs for various museums, zoological and conservation societies, as well as for schools and colleges. How It Began was produced by WHYY-TV, Philadelphia, and through dramatizations and animation the series shows how various elements in today's world which we often take for granted (clocks, advertising, number, lighting) came into being. Tell Me Why was produced by WILL-TV, Urbana, and features Keith Page, speech and dramatics professor at Edison Junior High School in Champaign, Illinois. The series is based on a series of loosely connected episodes which invariably work around to an explanation of how some organ or part of the body functions. The situations for these segments are realistic in that they are created and dramatized in a realistic manner. However, the locales may range from a basement workshop to a rocket landing on the moon, from a baseball diamond to the interior of Bobby's eye. The question "tell me why" is never asked directly, but the answer is always forthcoming. In addition to Keith Page, other participants are Bobby and Billy Price, twin twelve-year-old pupils at Edison Junior High School. Bobby and Betty appear in all of the segments. Series Description
What's New is a children's series that ran from 1961-1973. The early seasons typically consist of multiple segments, each from an ongoing series on a specific topic. Each segment was produced by a separate educational broadcasting station, and the linkage between the segments was produced by WHYY and hosted by Al Binford. In episodes from later seasons the format varies more, with many episodes focusing on one story or topic throughout the entire 30 minutes. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
