as in our next conversation mr hoffman like to pursue this with you we can talk about about day the nature of men beginning with this thought that work as a natural function of a i'm man and that man is to pursue the perfection of what god began which at he does what the polls say that was the third in a series of six conversations between her a call for james day the third in a series of six conversations between a general manager of kqed reporter it's been eric offer once observed that was important to him to own no more than they could pack on his back that says the philosophy of a man who was born of german immigrants in the bronx and himself emigrated to california as a young man of twenty where as he put it a man to be both poor and independent deprived of a formal education because of an eight year blindness he educated himself by devouring the contents of
public libraries while following the crops is a migrant labor up and down the values of the state in nineteen forty three he became a longshoreman the san francisco waterfront where he remains to this day mr laufer in our last conversation we talk about the role the intellectual on the fact that when the intellectual comes to power he creates a society where freedom disappears and where creativity disappears in the course of that you said that america was not a very a very good country for the intellectual that it actually was the first country that was a country of the masses what did you mean by this aisle i always felt you know that the metaphysical before the poor people not listed the eye can see for instance say that this has been growing and even some foreign country and feeling at home then i can see an american professor one supporter of relieving far i can see an
american girl going to forego preventive and four i can see an american labor leader was a foreign country and feeling at home i can't conceive and american what you're going to some foreign country working there and living it sequencing i make it with just made for us political of the night only when i don't know about this is there is a story i don't know what it was matthew arnold or affect our view from a little dicey in how it one of them came to disappoint me i think in the the eighteen seventies early eighties and he was from eritrea to leicester and he noticed is often made your jackson lee williams they'll those all support the monotony of eat buffet that lagarde of it any less fuel a view of the world and then you watch irish woman came and sat by an issue that is fueling resistance are
on the guys gets kids to the pool and that's what we see for the first time in history that passes had a chance to do something all on the aisle and that american poet vanna in the body now that these are knowledge how beaten back shipped overseas to steal a continent would neither should monitor their back this is what it was that the masses with it and that i was not an editor and given masterson tried you read about the history of the nineteen eighteen hundred there and you will see it was real the baby before the masses came before the immigration status and you had a bunch of small for me you ought to hear their comments about them as hunted and so when both of our lives as you said the grain based they have a suspicion of the mass is leading a field of isis this and then there was a statement to work and then they organize it
and thousands of years first hear did you hear about a company of metal locks you know there was a jammer butcher who think that he's going to be going to california and then in england in germany and in the mirrors class would be lucky even dvds through the family on any flat and he came to california another mountain i can you know when you're doing that and he saw the whole this i'm walking around and then suddenly realized that he killed all the whole of the san joaquin valley and he was so intoxicated that eventually almost probable that for the first time is to reach common peak i found cities at all about a job was it was a kenyan two of the principle of ignores the problem that the number before that the lines and i think that the resentment of the fourteen election it's america is like oh yes the masses that the common people until
saturday when the saturday without being there to weed out the individual's income patients you know i heard at a terrifically he did it with oh one indian intellectual against america he says we get nothing then from that i'm like i just had the chance you know that intellectually local see that and the sauce it legitimate unless it was blessed by war to arrest somebody for money some fury before summed up in four and then it was turned into flesh the owners of a chance of actually what about the losses for the first time and all of history pictures and all the forms of all the glories of america out the forks and lords of damascus there's a tremendous infusion of skills is a tremendous practical sense that is of course a confusion of quality with you the europeans and they've been in this shallowness
in an expression of what you want to see how it was the day when you discuss something abstract wounds awful and then you bring up a bigger problem and you'd see the brilliance of dissolution and i always said to myself for every citizen the same intelligence that goes into solution of these ethical problems for severe weather and once you leave weapons at it provide how do they got a genius she's there is getting easier you because we owe you think would love a lot of interview you'll get the easy so unable to see the solutions that the woodwork now who are there were subtle it was something they had all the earmarks of orthodox church and a beautiful thought and i always wondered if the saints and walking into the ideas when you see the va as the very fact that we are not citizens of
our own originality it's the city itself into action that medicine at americans action is a work of art you know how it is like an antidote to the fine art is called out they hit elimination of the super for us he sees the essence of it and when you see the economical way in which an iraqi working with authorities to define this the year its simplicity offering solutions sixty is a workable in an action he's is he is they are a form of expression and i think he's much more so much more humane than what you get it's easily up sort of forces ed to war on the question of like some of this and i wrote to one of the mit officer ok at the university michigan did read the true believer and the he was impressed but some sectors
the root of the daily goldman had that life that he wanted to find out the attitude of the students to go with the with their worries so you do the question they asked bp and i grew up with as it of course every american will tell you that that had to be a living the ultimate that live in this post the beer is lawrence the awards are much worse you know open the hatch said i'm an american hasn't always been defined solely by but you know the idea of unwarranted opened yesterday he really hasn't yet cynical sort of what you see it's it's it's just something about like the idea the vatican believes and idealism and he
his idealistic as the actions he's only seen as people went after a better than the ones the acts are absolutely have the congress and they want to be a tool for a couple sort of what it means to have the quintessence of the gasoline that the reasoning at that store we were at a frame or ideally the moment it's looking towards what we know that it was respectful interaction think of idealistic and therefore you can't actually tell us leo originality and the number of the automatic and by talking with you have to want it you have to participate in the leaves and then also all he's all its precious comes out and he sees the pentagon take the cheese off a society for good fashioned way toward the supreme does not also relate to the autonomous individuals that you speak of a mass society but this is a massive study made up of autonomous individuals i wouldn't exaggerate the
alkalinity of the american invasion when i see that time and it is a problem of individual i don't need for money for his own thoughts that everything he got it i think a lot more what i mean by an autonomous and injuries that has to make its own choice that he's responsible for whatever he makes a profit for the masses like queens if you give them a lot and he's a bit of a surprise you know what when i worked out the theory is that only class the only type of people who are really stimulate the freedom rights we've said before that the election does not produce his best in a free society we have all the evidence in the war the we had plenty of review four hundred years of solvency and certainly our approach to reaching this was not a particular degree if we sell but masses if you leave them alone even though their and they can go to the world our way or both of the ball down way they would behave as if there was a massive reitman know what and the
reason is because what is the only way in which common people from the easiest way the most accessible way to improve their way i always knew it and it's very good to agree with a little bit with the foreign forces that to me baby unemployed almost as much as the baby boom workers are worth it says a lot that was even decades so much like you know what we want you to get you on the closure people realize just what will work place in him again in it in the light of all of that would you do introduce a new work and that shifted to receive on friday that it's a significant find i think that that it be unemployed if they ever admitted it
is not a revolution it may not be because of the misery not because of the politics or what it will be you watch in action will not be able to work he says the thing that the elite league and that it's really rolling sea i think that american can be rapid only might catch you remember somebody hold the president eisenhower there wasn't a great thing to the new zealand in his place there and he made as speech contending cops et and pornography and sought support and then at the new york times sent out letters to be able to comment on that are similar to an and i was in the case and i think that's only as an actor do i said i would be afraid of upsetting to corrupt and other pornography corrupting gaza and the girl is the only thing that can corrupt as is an important city and especially now you'll see if you have twenty percent of our you'll see about what is a corruption of you
eat the koran about body politic and islam and economic decline more than i could not absolutely because what is being which is anywhere maybe in germany and there's nothing to see and you see forcing france their parents he's the id id id if you were convicted of a thirty forty two we live in america with his business has a different role to get it since it's at the very top of our self confidence and self respect as a story you argue that they are the principal probably the commonest countries is getting people to work out what you see i told you with the id the masses were only when the athlete wendy i allow local that the order would also only singing but the intellectual and believe that if you don't live in a society and if you pull it at as civilizing intelligence and the way you have it with a weakened isis were in the middle you think about some of
the year and you want to read this is that people believe in it and that's why i don't think that the economy system the masses were ever really before doing the performances was not the operation we don't know but i see we haven't had a parent that is it brought the guy we need the only means by which the people being this self respect and an advocate their culverts while with a comically this would you think you wont have to defend the masses that will perform it look what's going on in every time you have to sort of the war you have to harvest at its sixty eight every day that varies is the radio or a multi of the role in a regular television they're here rebuilding the ones that are so big building the once that happens there the chief problem which is confronting the leadership there evidence of
economies country is how to make that work out in the past i believe as a terrible heart just it just was a one day what he's the chief program which confronts the leadership of the communist regime and when i got this you know how that maybe there's just brought in a problem that affects the air they are foreign policy because of what brought me that people wonder why did you want to capture robin want to produce and that's what bees and yet you said that if the men are free and left alone they'll drive themselves were nervous if you could have they use that vets demanded that's amanda berry be out as a real but they know it's an internalized obama by richie freeman as at the valley about everything right inside the seat and actually it says i quit
after he did describe it as it as it became that the key to the communist society then blacken the freedom and the self confidence of the worker must used in your term substitutes in this case there absolutely this course is that it was with enthusiasm and started with one and it ended up what's the reality of war used to be with a russian ship it out there are seven things you know doing the war we get up in the morning or analysis at what seventies eighties of a stretch of course if i told somebody or assad because i want to defeat it would not be of the what if nobody would advocate and so we thought that many of us didn't exactly and i said to myself
actually no because you just saw pictures of they'll arrest him on film and going towards say iran and the great enthusiasm and yet we probably logged out it's much better and they loaded with old it was a much more efficient much more quietly but that day and week yes it was supposed to have a car that would run it by giving of gasoline or by making at that is the speech do you say what itunes and it was visible and icicles made that having every us because the moment it will mop respond to the speech you know what you want to know if one of the kids think and stop the car and that's what happened to lee collins this is dotted with enthusiasm but if you win you suddenly have to conclude that he can do all that and don't forget this debate it's it's a very surprising
think intellectuals a man of words or you should be a master old appetizer which hitler to come to power he asked you this you want to signal and you have to really like is why the new reason that i have for it is that the intellectual power is evading it might leave a conception of how he thinks about our guest if i had you the wild types both leaders see the states with h that a business on support to see what they're interested in our show and some profits they're interested in ending in getting a certain things don't see the indian dionne well as as eve of archive you know and i always felt that effective to his bosses other veterans get
we preview and he didn't set the affable it's like this is what you know the holy see it will be even to get an idea of what's at the end of the set and the worker and so are auto workers was working the ball's well i don't eat it's a different thing you know nobody has an american security off of their water from it and then what the factors i don't know how it is in fact an issue it wouldn't be much different than use of the water and his opponent is blurring of facts what's an old boss on the waterfront here during the war we had hundreds of people were big shots and then the walkers and the running of the ship whatever they said went it would happen when
fiery would always things and then what the internet and overnight the state who enjoy such a tremendous and it would do it how was a beard and he went down overnight into they were likable and actually all of the act people adding that the media hype now because they've come out of the world and i did need the alliance few video hundreds of the world and it was white because even though i'm well if all the four time you know the difference between the wages of the boys and the reviews of the off the year where he meant it oh i would say it's significant that the animals ate it made off the beginning off a difference in quality and the police all the buses actually given volume and the uk have a quarrel with that with that with allen without employers there that's it
it awful lot of accountability many of you see this unlikable you have many graduates of universities on the union that on on on on the riverfront there and i've seen very well but we see although it i think many of them actually within their lives would have been something like that wasn't satisfied but you would not substitute management whose motivations profit for the worker justice a nationalization that goal you see when you come to a massive invasion does the different people together for the very reason that my idea of a massive asian populations i say believe operation eliminate the worker each an example or two and once you have the operation once you can produce all that we need in the women
riders they discuss making one cent one sense of the term the money because you have to be expended now supply all five minutes solid subsistence and once you realize that you realize that the benefits of this company it's something altogether different thing as that and we have to we happily live event like the super bowl rings of victories changed the center of medicaid population he's a changed for me is that probably has it has more explosive by professionals and more explosive potentialities than any change that we've been talking and yet nobody realized we actually have evidence us it would have to have a new system and in order to leave a in our community is oh good heavens we could spend their whole day talking about
the end of the year because the corpses of automation at uc i don't think i would've been out making marymount and i'm very much aware of what a commission that but to me it seems that the whole industrial teach you that we are going to go just a preliminary faiths ethnicities office and that was before the lead ahead you know before just not comedians that network this week and the game's elite into freedom on the operation could really give us three things allow freedom to develop ourselves to eliminate the only waste that really counts how many pallets we said this country was debating it with people but a decidedly and i know that lawrence block sleep of course i don't like some of this morning i tell you there is tremendous what that some of the
specimens in and that they have a peaceful warrior's you can see him and going around they're whittling se and you can see the that ease of being born out of there that's trying to come out in the wings scratching war as it has power as it and i can develop a halt if you read all the origins of not just looking at is that is crawling out of wall street so you have a population here wakes up with population is still be our business is mainly our job the juilliard school be open cavities and in our population and money than the fee it like to work on it and at stake and articulate and if you reduce the opportunities for work it also upper reduce the opportunity for freedom it's a question of self respect is that they you have a population living off the fat of the man without a sense of usefulness you would have something like the bottom the border with a new openness that's all the practice there
is they gallop vivid portal it's one was a certain age i've often present many things there and they have no sense of its worst losses of what they can give a heating oil markets thinking racists or supports i actually made a point this week that if we let this operation go that wheaties and actually provide people with the wherewithal of a living even at that there you are going to have an explosion here you have rays president says you have not to presidents as you read think the nazis had an economist because you have a mission with our sense of work without the citizens and we have to switch we have to change our ideas of what he's efficient of what the spectacle what this with what i see we have to finish that as i said he got creative as you want to open jobs and balance the universe
and we have to finish it when we don't believe we have not been what will board for that's what were born for the question was like the ford focus scales

Description
Episode Description
James Day interviews longshoreman philosopher Eric Hoffer. Mr. Hoffer discusses America as a mass society, the importance of work to self-esteem, communism, and automation.
Episode Description
Mr. Hoffer proclaims that America is the only mass society and that the faults of America are the faults of a mass society and not of a business society. He discusses the importance of work to the individual's self-esteem and elaborates on what he believes is the principal problem of communism: How to get people to work. He also views automation as a threat to the individual's self-esteem. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
Eric Hoffer, philosopher and longshoreman, is interviewed in by James Day, general manager of KQED in San Francisco. In the first season of six episodes, the conversations are based on Mr. Hoffers latest book, The Ordeal of Change, published in March of 1963 by Harper and Row. Eric Hoffer works four days a week as a San Francisco longshoreman just enough to pay bills for his furnished room and meals. His main concerns are reading, thinking and writing. Mr. Hoffer has produced three books, The True Believer, The Passionate State of Mind, which is a collection of 280 aphorisms on man, and The Ordeal of Change, which states his philosophy on what history teaches us. Eric Hoffer was born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1902, the song of a German cabinetmaker. His Mother died when he was seven-years-old, and shortly thereafter, he lost his eyesight. Nine years later, Mr. Hoffers sight was restored and he began to read voraciously. In the early 1920s, he moved to the West Coast where he worked at different types of laboring jobs while continuing his main preoccupation reading. In the late 1930s, Mr. Hoffer began writing and by the early 1940s, he was sending his efforts to publishers. The True Believer, published in 1951 was his first success. Mr. Hoffer is interviewed by James Day, general manager of station KQED, San Francisco. Mr. Day is host for the stations popular interview series Kaleidoscope. He is a former deputy director of Radio Free Asia and former public affairs director of KNBC in San Francisco. He was graduated from the University of California in 1941. Conversations with Eric Hoffer is a 1963 production of KQED, San Francisco. The 12 half-hour episodes that comprise the series were originally recorded on videotape.
