- Description
- Program Description
- Outspoken Dr. Pauling speaks here of the duty of science to the citizen and of the citizen's duty to understand some facts of science. Dr. Pauling's lively manner, as well as what he says, explains why he pits his strength against the "Bomb" and anything else that he feels threatens the future of mankind. Heaped with honors by many nations, this Noble prize-winner has the attraction of a wise and fun-loving uncle when he appears before a television camera. Dr. Pauling dislikes the thought that nuclear war will destroy mankind. To maintain life, the scientist must take a stand as a citizen, according to Dr. Pauling. In addition, the doctor talks of his amazing discoveries about the chemistry of the human body - "nobody had thought before that there could be abnormal molecules of proteins responsible for disease." However, he constantly returns to his theme that all discovery has hazards and that the good of mankind depends on the alertness of the scientist and layman alike. Science, he says, consists in knowing, understanding, and appreciating the world.Dr. Linus Pauling, the noted chemist, holds his Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State College and his PhD from the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Pauling has been a professor at Cal Tech for a number of years. Known for his work in chemotherapy, Dr. Pauling has received numerous awards in the field of chemistry including the Nobel Prize (1954) and the Pasteur Medal. He is the author of several books and articles. Interview with Linus Pauling is a production of the National Film Board of Canada. The program was produced in 1960 and runs approximately an hour..
