- Description
- Episode Description
- This one-hour color program features a rock concert, specially staged by NET in association with the Fillmore, which will be taped before a live audience on September 23. In addition to the four acts, the program will also include Bill Graham, the founder of Fillmore's East and West, and Joe's Lights, the Fillmore's creative light show. NET will also go behind the scene for a look at the performers ' activities during the concert. A four-man musical group, the Byrds are most noted for their successful single "Mr. Tambourine Man," written by Dylan. Bill Graham has called them the "people who started it all" and they have been accredited with having done more than any other group, with the exception of the Beatles, to change the course of popular music. Van Morrison is a rock singer with a totally individual sound. In reviewing his new album, "Moondance," Ralph J. Gleason noted that "no other singer -- at least no other solo singer -- has emerged recently with the vitality, maturity, and completeness of Van Morrison." The Sha-Na-Na, who have appeared at Fillmore and at Woodstock, have brought "old" rock back with their "Rock and Roll is here to Stay" album. Meanwhile the seven-man Flock group has created a new phenomenon -- what they describe as "Flock music -- a cross between every group you 've heard and a group you 've never heard." Fanfare -- "Fillmore East" is an NET production. Note: The list of performers is as follows: The Byrds, the Elvin Bishop Group, Albert King, Van Morrison, and the Sha-Na-Na. Please note that the Flock and the Allman Brothers, although they performed during the taping, are not seen in this program. It was initially distributed by NET on October 11, 1970 as the first episode of Fanfare. On June 27, 1971 it was reaired as the 38th episode of Fanfare.
