Hi there. Tonight on Sounds of Summer, we're going almost 8 ,000 feet above sea level. It's the little village of Aspen, Colorado, where the Aspen Music Festival is celebrating its 20th birthday. In those relatively few years, the musical activities that have taken place here have been of such quality and importance. That today, the Aspen Festival is considered among the leading festivals of the world. The dedicated address of the first Aspen Festival in 1949 was delivered by Albert Schweitzer
during his only visit to the United States. Others present for that first season were Nathan Milstein, Arthur Rubenstein, Gregor Piotegorski, and the Minneapolis Symphony under the direction of Demetri Metropolis. Every summer since then, the clear air of Aspen has carried the sounds made by some of the most distinguished musicians in the world. Tonight, you and I have been invited to attend a concert being given by the classical guitarist Oscar Gilia. During the summer, Mr. Gilia is conducting two seminars in the classical guitar at the Aspen Music School, which has been an integral part of the festival since its inception. The late Walter P. Pepke, Chicago industrialist and founder of the Aspen Festival, defined its aims in the following way, to improve standards of musical performance in America and to stimulate appreciation for the best in music by the American public. Oscar Gilia, teacher and performer,
symbolizes the unity of these aims at Aspen. His concert tonight will be given in Pepke Auditorium, named, of course, for the Thunder of the Festival. The Auditorium, like all the other buildings of the Aspen Music Festival in school complex, is located at the foot of the spectacular peaks which make up the elk mountain range. And now here is classical guitarist Oscar Gilia. Music

The Aspen Music Festival, held annually in Aspen, Colorado, features world-renowned soloists, orchestras, chamber ensembles, chorus and opera, as well as a special series of master classes held in addition to the regular sessions of the Aspen Music School. From the twentieth Aspen Music Festival, this episode features the young Italian-born classical guitarist Oscar Ghiglia, visiting Aspen for the first time, in both performance and master class sessions. Ghiglia holds master classes as part of a special series of seminars for teachers and auditors given by the Festival.
