Description
Episode Description
This program presents three plays by young playwrights whose work has been performed at La Mama Experimental Theater Club. La Mama ETC has been one of Broadway's busiest centers for experimentation in theater, and Ellen Steward, its founder, has presented a different program each week. During its first five-years, many leading new "underground" playwrights in the United States had their first confrontation with an audience at La Mama. The three works selected for "NET Playhouse" were among Ellen Stewart's most popular. They have been presented in other theaters off-off-Broadway, as well as in other cities and at festivals throughout the country. Each of the three playwrights has also had his plays performed abroad by the now well-known La Mama acting company. The first play on the program is "Pavane" by Jean-Claude van Itallie, which was taped in the lobby of the First National City Bank on Park Avenue. Echoing the formal movements of the old dance from which the play gets its name, the characters move through a set ritual of human responses in our society. The second play on the program is "Fourteen Hundred Thousand" by Sam Shepard, set in an apartment, involving a young couple, presents of one of them, and a friend. The third is "The Recluse" by Paul Foster. It was taped in an abandoned hospital on Welfare Island in New York's East River, and deals with a demented old lady. La Mama Playwrights is a National Educational Television production. Producer: Brice Howard. Staged by: Tom O 'Horgan. Directed for television by: Don Hallock. This 75-minute piece was recorded on videotape and aired as NET Playhouse episode 16 on January 20, 1967 and as NET Playhouse episode 142 on June 19, 1969.
