Description
Episode Description
The program concerns the specialist and his role in modern medicine. The early morning commuter rush affords the viewer intimate glances at the intern, the resident, the pediatrician, and the surgeon. The viewer learns about their financial circumstances, their duty to medicine, becomes part of their thoughts, and is drawn into their medical pasts. From the young intern who is being introduced to "the patient in his actual moment to need" to the successful surgeon, the camera follows their constant need to research and to study. An eleven-year-old girl badly jaundiced and with an acute pain in her abdomen, mobilizes the entire medical team at Philadelphia's Temple University Hospital where the program was filmed. An intern and two resident doctors take part in the baffling case which requires the combined skills of the most eminent specialists in the institution as well as a full complement of professional research personnel. Three young physicians and a medical student at Temple University Medical College and Hospital share honors as "stars" in this program. Peter N. Hillyer, M.D., narrator of the program, is a thirty-year-old resident at Temple, and a graduate of Williams College. He received his M.D. from the University of Rochester and interned at Boston City Hospital before going to Temple in 1962. Stanley L. Goodwin, M.D., a third-year surgical resident, is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the Temple University Medical School. The thirty-three year-old physician interned at Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan, before returning t Temple for his residency in 1961. Dr. Goodwin is married, and his wife is a former second grade school teacher. They have three children. Michael J. Pitt, M.D., and intern at Temple, was a Cum laude graduate at Muhlenberg College and a member of the honorary medical fraternity at Jefferson Medical College. He is married to a former graduate student at Temple University and is the father of a two-year-old boy. Richard E. Sandrow, a senior medical student, is a native Philadelphia, and received his college degree at Temple before entering Medical College. His wife is a speech therapist at Magee memorial Hospital for Convalescents. Two roles are played by professional actresses - the eleven-year-old patient and her mother. Stephanie Pomerantz is twelve-years-old and has performed for the Neighborhood Players and other Philadelphia companies. Loretta Leversee, familiar to Broadway audiences since 1953, has played leading roles in literally scores of television dramas from soap operas to commercials. Some of her outstanding performances include Philco Playhouse's "Man on the Mountaintop" and the Dupont Show of the Week's "Ride With Terror." Miss Leverse has also starred in two award-winning documentaries for Vision Associates.
