Description
Episode Description
Jefferson Airplane, one of the leading rock groups in the country, is seen in this hour-long documentary-performance program filmed at a studio recording session. The Airplane is also the featured group on Fanfare #10, "San Francisco at the Family Dog," a one-hour color performance show tape at San Francisco's rock spot, the Family Dog, during an all-night rock party which also included the Grateful Dead and Santana. Also featured are brief segments from a rock concert with Quicksilver Messenger Service at Sonoma State College in California. Jefferson Airplane, which had its origins in San Francisco, has been called "one of the best and most lyrical of the new blues-rock groups" (Variety) and "... a swinging combination of wit and fervor" (San Francisco Examiner). They are best known for the single hit "Somebody to Love." Three of their albums -- "Surrealistic Pillow," "Crown of Creation" and "Volunteers" -- have sold more than a million copies each. The phrase "go ride the music" is contained in the song "Wooden Ships" from their most recent album "Volunteers." Composed of lead singers Marty Balin and Grace Slick, lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, bass guitarist Jack Casady, drummer Joey Covington (who has replaced Spencer Dryden), and singer-guitarist Paul Kantner, the Airplane has created a sound drawn from the jazz, folk, blues, and rock and roll backgrounds of its individual members. Fanfare #9 -- "San Francisco Rock: Go Ride the Music" is a KQED, San Francisco production for NET. This hour-long piece was shot in color. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
