This BBC-NET production traces the life of noted march composer John Philip Sousa (1854-1932). Using persons who knew Sousa and actually played for him, the program recaptures the "Sousa Sound," an integral part of his compositions. This documentary-portrait also employs rare historical film footage and a specially-augmented Detroit Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Leonard Smith. Playing in the reconstructed band are such notables as Bill Bell, one of the conductor-composer's most famous sousaphone players. There are also commentaries by Leopold Stokowski; Sir Arthur Bliss, Master of the Queen's Music; choreographer George Balanchine; Sir Vivian Dunn, former principal director of music of the Royal Marines; and Mrs. Helen Sousa Abert, Sousa's daughter, along with the present Marine Band. The program draws on rare archival materials collected from all over the United States and features the reconstructed version of the band with which he toured and captivated audiences around America and the world for nearly forty years. Sousa as novelist, as violinist under the baton of Offenbach, as composer of operettas, fantasies, humoresques the great march king is seldom thought of in these terms. Yes, John Philip Sousa, whose favorite composers were Beethoven and Wagner, was all of these and more. He was a champion trap shooter, a horseman, a Freemason, and devout family mad who always obeyed his mother's instruction never to compose on a Sunday. And he was also a hard headed businessman, a gentle wit and most important of all an electrifying showbiz entertainer. Performers in the program include soprano Anne Pashley, tenor Jack Irons, and pianist Sandy Blair. The voice of Sousa: Ben Lyon. Narrator: Humphrey Lyttleton.
