We fish for the red fish. While we are out at sea, Chano up in talks of the past and of our ancestors, the Mayans. As we run the pool and I see the final tell, it shines like a giant temple in the morning sun. It is very beautiful. Boy, a good fisherman always looks out to the sea where the big fish hide, not to the land, but it is a beautiful land, our Isla Mujeres, where once Mayan kings and priests came to play to worship and sacrifice. It was long ago, boy, over a thousand years ago. They made beautiful temples with their own hands, temples reaching up to the sky,
reaching with love and fear to many gods. Your ancestors, the Mayans, were a proud and noble people. You have their blood, their heart, their spirit, and maybe someday you will have their wisdom. You don't know from what proud and noble people you come from. Yes, Chano, but I care only where I am going. There, Chano, someday I will live in the fine hotel. I will be so rich, on top will be your sign and red paint. Luis lives here. That is how rich I will be someday. And the reggae, I got back to work.
I have a big heart, I want to be a rich and noble person. I have a big heart, I want to be a rich and noble person. You and your ancient gods, why should a god of fishermen not be good to a poor fisherman? I hear his voice. Did you listen? Why do you feel the boy's head with such foolishness? You are the foolish one. You offend the
poor. A butcher of turtles is also a fisherman. Beware. I have no time for silly stories. Why do you bother me when you see I am such a busy man? Always he bothers me with the nonsense. I have no time for such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I am such a busy man, I

You work hard this morning, you go on in play,
I deliver the fish alone. Thanks, Janau. I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't I don't know what I'm talking about, but I don't know
. . . . You see many strange things down here. The coral has many shapes. . .
What is it? It looks like a face. It's a stone head. What happened to the sun? It's dark. . Come on, come on. I found something under the water. They're not dragging.
It was so big it covered the sun. Maybe it was cutting the stone head. Stone head? I found a stone head under the water. So worth much money. Money? I won't finish the doors for you. Tour the shops soon. They are expecting them later this afternoon. You will deliver them. Please? Yes. Yes. . . I demand to know why you let the skinny turtles into my net. The last one. I am questioning an employee. So why? Why? Why is always a blame on me, Balam?
Do I sit under the sea inviting one? Tour to come into your net. Telling another he cannot come to have his head cut off. Always you upset my nerves, Balam. And the reggae you were born with upset nerves. See? Because even before I was born, I knew I would work for you. As for you little one, do not dare come back into my net until you are big and fat. Sticks from you would shame such a fine turtle butcher. Eat much. No fat, my darling. Balam, a turtle butcher must be very wise, yes? Yes, but when a boy asked me if I am wise, I am wise enough to know he wants something. No, a
friend told me there are dragons in the sea. You are foolish, yes? There cannot be dragons in the sea, can they? I have no time for dragons. When the otel buys dragon steaks instead of turtle steaks, then I will talk to you little dragons, eh? John, can I borrow a piece of rope? Sure. A friend, very foolish, I think, tells me there are dragons in the sea. The sea is very big, full of mysteries. To a little sardine, a flounder would look like a dragon, but it is not a dragon. Then there are no dragons in the sea. No, what do you say that? Who knows? The ancients believe in strange
serpents who lived in the sea, and in the sky. Why did this friend speak to you of dragons? We were just talking. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The
ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. There it is again. It's a turtle, a huge turtle. It's the biggest turtle I've ever seen. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. If I pull
up on a shell, he gulls where I want him to. I've typed the rope from the stone head to the turtle. He got the head out of the water. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. Where are you going, turtle? Remember, we are friends now. The ancients believe in strange serpents who lived in the sea. Jano, Balam! Come
on, hurry, look what I've found. Beautiful. This is very old. To list us, maybe we'll pay much money for it, huh? Luis will be rich. Rich. Buh, stone heads. This. This is something for excitement. So many fine things I will make from you, my darling. So proud you will be turtle. He's my friend. Yeah, for ten pesos he is no longer your friend, huh? No. Someday, he will find himself in my nets anyway. Always heating solely of the butcher and dirtles, eh? Twenty pesos? Twenty pesos mean nothing to a rich boy? Yes, but long, twenty pesos will mean nothing to
me. There are other kind of riches, boy. Money's not everything. Maybe a thousand years ago, your ancestors carved this stone, not only with their hands, but with their love. This. This is a great treasure. It will make me rich when I sell it. Is it yours to sell? Are you going to allow it to leave its home? Ya no, ya no. He who finds can sell them? This statue is our heritage. A small piece of a great history. Look at that old face. It could be, it's summer. The sky god of the Mayas.
Boy, don't sell it. Throw it back in the sea. Channel. It could be worth much money, eh? Yes, and he would bring a lot of tourists. And they would grow in our land. They would dig and dig for treasures and tear our history from our soil. They would bring much money, much business. We would grow. We was brought of what? Big fancy buildings, big factories, machines, noises, and everybody in a big hurry to get rich? No, no. We will grow in our own way. Slow, peaceful. Boy, you sell that statue. And it could bring anger from the spirits. Spirits are gods who are too busy making the sun shines to know about business. Why do you offend them by calling them businessmen, eh? A turtle butcher is a fine businessman.
I, Balaam, will help you sell this statue. You don't care if misfortune comes to reslam awareness? It is worth money for your man. That is all we can about. Is it not soloist? Well, name rich channel. I will buy you a new boat with red sales. I don't need a new boat, boy. That statue is our culture. Our civilization that goes by... Channel, do I pay you good pesos to drive my turtle meat to the hotel kitchen? I pay you good pesos. So do not get speeches. Drive! He doesn't like to be tied up. He wants to go back to his
home. But he is my friend. I will come back and feed him. Would you like it if your friend tights you up and tells you under the sea? I would die. I will see you tomorrow, where I come to statue. Remember, we are friends now. I
don't care how busy you were. I wanted you to take the dolls to the gift shop. I know, but... No, Louise, no. The dolls I make earn us money. And they must be delivered as I promised them. That is your duty. You are not longer a baby. Or are you? Well, then I respect you to behave like a young man. I'm very young, Louise. I'm sorry. Oh, I don't know what I want to do with you. Be very proud when I am rich and... Good evening, good evening, Christina. I have come for my associate in business. Well, I was going to help me find a buyer for my statue. Louise, the dolls. All right. I will take them myself. Oh, nice, very nice, Christina. I mean, it may be a little more color in the face. Oh, get out.
I was waiting for you. If you came in time, maybe you would not have gotten the ball out. Ah, that crazy fisherman. He heard this man. Channel? See, scraping his body fell. I must go to him. Later, later, we have business at the hotel. But channel is my friend. Do you want to be a rich man or a nurse, eh? You can see channel leader. First, we attend to business, huh? Come, we go to the hotel. Who is a business man? Malam is, eh? Did I tell you the hotel manager would find us a buyer? Do not look down your nose at me, you pay on an fancy shirt.
I am Malam, they've been on sale. Come, come, my boy. Soon, we will all be rich. We? Well, do you think I give you my advice for nothing? Do you think the hotel manager finds us buyers for nothing? Do not be greedy, my business associate. Come, we will take the shortcut. Channel says there are spirits in the room. Malam has no fear for spirits. Businessmen are fearless men. Ah.
Beautiful, right? Fresh air? Beautiful. Night. Night. Night.
Night. Night. Night. Night. Night. Night. We're standing in the middle of the fire, a spirit of the ancients, with snakes for her and Louise. This is not such a thing as it goes that I know what I saw, mother. She was old and thin. We have to do something, but not a spirit. There are many strange old men on the island. They have just a
one sitting in the ruins and one himself by the fire. He was in the fire, tempi, tall Louise. Don't talk foolishness. I tell you better than that. Now go to sleep. Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep.
Mother! There! It was looking at me. The ghost of the ancients was coming after me, a bad dream, Louise, nothing but a fearful dream. No, mother, with my own eyes, I saw it, but we seeing dreams seems real, but it's not. When I took the statue, I angered the gods. Louise, there's only one god and he's good. I angered them and now they come for me. Chano told me the ancients had many powers. And what else if Chano tell you? That there could be misfortunes. Chano's
hand. Good morning, Christina. You are up early, huh? Enough is enough, Chano. You are stupid stories that have 35 -year -old boy. What did I do now, woman? It's a ranger field. Like you always do. Tell stories, stories. You have nothing better to do with your life. A good way to start today, Christina, shouting at Chano. Are you getting old? It is you brain so soft that you have pleasure in frightened children. Or Chano. You angered me. You disgust me. The boy is talking of the spirits in the ruins. He sees faces in his window. And it's your fault. Your fault, Chano. What do you see, boy? I saw the face of Ipsana
in my window. And Balaam and I saw ghost last night in the ruins. It was nothing, only the moonlight. You ran, Balaam. I ran only to protect you, to keep you from getting lost. It is all very strange because last night I had much nervousness. A feeling something bad was going to happen. Now, I am not a superstitious man, but... No, I have no time for nonsense. Hey, do I pay you to stand here, come and leave me. Coolishness. Now, Chano hurts his hands. Everything starts when he brings a stature from the sea. I feel anger in the air. Mind. Now, I do satisfy, Chano, that you can frighten the whole village. Does he make you feel big and strong and powerful? That you can frighten people? You should be ashamed of yourself. Tell the boy that he is not a
spirit. Tell him. What? What is this? Look. Look. You hate my neck. Poor and shredded. Everywhere in this section. Have the rocks never turned in that before? Yes, but not so much, not so badly. Something bad is happening. Are you old children? Are you all superstitious old men? Tell them. Tell them what woman? I don't know anything. Get on the boat, boy. We have much to do. I don't want him to go. Do you think he's right for a mother to encourage her son to run away from his duty because he is frightened? All right. But don't fool his head with foolishness. And you don't pay attention to his stories. And you. You want the boy to sell the statue?
You are very brave, my friend. Very brave. Let's go, boy. I'm sorry you hurt your hand, channel. It's not bad. I wanted to come to you yesterday when Belong told me you hurt yourself. But I had business at the hotel. That's all right, boy. Come on. Come on. It's a strange thing. What?
Fear. After what you saw, are you afraid? Yes. The angels had fear and they were brave. Some men had been brave because they were afraid to run away. There is only one way. One way to conquer fear. How's that, channel? Face it, boy. Search it out and face it. I can go later to the temple. Probably the turtle is waiting. The turtle
is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle
is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle
is waiting. The turtle is waiting. The turtle is waiting. That was a fate. And they ran away. It's all right, boy. It's all right. Maybe, maybe tomorrow, you will not run away. See? You think all it was by Lama's brave? No. Much practice took me to be brave. Now, smile. Smile. At any moment, the buyer will be here, and you will be rich. My turtle, she didn't come back. Maybe the statue was a marker for his feeding ground,
and he's looking for it. And now he is angry at me. Such a big turtle is very old. Maybe he got to the statue for 100 years. Oh, you are starting again. Again, you are starting with the foolish stories. Maybe I should throw the statue back into the sea. What? What? At any moment, the buyer will be here, and you talk of throwing away our statue. Oh, you cannot do this to me. We, we are business associates. We are lifelong friends. Oh, many bad things have happened by Lama. Channels can. What do you see? You're, you're nether. Accidels moon light. There is my darling boy. You cannot throw away so much money. We cannot sacrifice so much. Sacrifice. See. Hi. By Lama. We'll make a sacrifice to please the
ancients. Wait, Luis. You will see. Go. Go. Go. Go. You are free. Hey, come. Hurry. Come see, but I'm going to lose this mind. Hurry. Come.
Run away. Run away. Good morning. Look at me, spirits. All these fine steaks I am setting free as a sacrifice to you. That's a lot of money swimming away, Balam. See, nothing is too good for this spirits. It is such a fine sacrifice. These spirits will find me a good buyer. Even they will forget about the statue. With my shadow of the money, what are you two turtles? Look, he is coming. Not bad. Not bad at all. Yes. Yes. I will give you $20
for it. Why treasure of a magnificent people? Think of its history. You will find my ear, Senor. Take it or leave it. Even my eyes, you will find. Think of our past, our heritage, Senor. Well, you drive a pretty shrewd bargain. Of course. I'll make it $50. That is a very good price for tourist trinkets. You have insulted us, Senor. I am insulted. And when I am insulted, I am very insulted. The matter is closed. We will not sell. Well, would, uh, $200 make you change your mind? I will, uh, consider. And, uh, you may, uh, contact, uh, my secretary to, uh, see me tomorrow. Well, look, let's not push it too far. I'll give you $300 for the idol. American.
Now. No, no, Senor. We, we talk no more today. Uh, I, uh, have other business matters to attend to. Uh, maybe even other buyers. All right. I'll be in the hotel. Uh, tell them I said to give you first class service. The name Balam carries much authority there. Yes. I'll tell you what. This is for you to make sure I get the idol one way or another. And I don't care who I get it from. Understand? I understand, Senor. Well? I'm sorry to bother you, sir. If I sell you
the stature, we'll really do it. Well, I don't know. All depends. It is a great treasure of our people. The ancients who made it were very wise. Do you believe in the ancients? No. I just buy and sell. You would sell it? Probably. Oh. Maybe it has a bad curse on it. It curse could take off your skin and boil your brains. Well, that's a risk I'll have to take. I'll tell you. I'll tell you. I'll
tell you. I'll tell you. I'll tell you. I'll tell you. The ancients had fear, and they were brave. They weren't afraid of the tall techs, or the Aztecs. Not even of spirits. I'll tell you.
you. I'll tell you. Your ancestors, the lions, were a proud and noble people. You have their blood, their heart, their spirit, and maybe someday you will have their wisdom. I'll tell you. I am
mine. I am yours. Chango. Chango, I went to the ruins like ancient warriors. I wasn't even afraid. Good. Good. I'm proud of you, boy. I give
you this, so you will remember, never to be afraid again. I will never be afraid again. Thank you, Channel. I will not tell the statue. You gave your word. I gave no word, Belom. You cannot do this to me. If you offered $300 yesterday, today you will offer $500. Maybe even $1 ,000. I did not care. I am proud of the statue. Even my turtles, I sacrificed for you. All of my turtles, I set free to protect you from the curse. We are business associates, my boy. We are friends. Yes, friends. I am enough for you to make up your mind. I do not have time to argue with you. I am a busy man. A very busy
man. Why do you stare at him like that? Yesterday he... Eat what? Nothing. It is nothing, Channel. I have to go. Cristina. Are you there, Cristina? No. No.
What does he know about this, is he? Later on, he will be grateful for it. Even he will thank me for what I am about to do. A business man, yes. A thief?
No. Sometimes, it is heartbreaking not to be a thief. I would like to know what kind of a game you people are playing. I will give you a thousand for it. Luis cannot sell it, Cristina. The people in the village stopped the money. No one did fish him, but Luis and Cristina. Cristina, there is a curse on you, no? I don't be foolish, please. You care nothing for the village, huh? You care only for the money. Do you believe that, Enrique? No, no, no. I thought I would give it to a museum for all to see. For all to see? You mean for all of them to come running around
here, like greedy merchants and try to tear our land apart? Oh, now this is getting ridiculous. I'll give you 1 ,200 for it. It is the boys to do what they wish. You know this place you live in isn't exactly a palace. Think of what you can do with the 1 ,500 dollars that I'll give you for the idol. It is my son's decision. But he's only a kid, lady. And how else he can learn to be a man, senior? With so much wealth, he will learn Cristina. You people drag me down here because you have something to sell. All right, 7. No, no, Cristina. Already there's enough misfortune in the village. Quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet. All right, all right. I'll give you 2 ,000 dollars for the idol. And that's my last offer. 2 ,000 dollars, Cristina. 2 ,000 dollars. If you have some, I think you should go home. 2 ,000 dollars, Cristina. 2
,000 dollars, Cristina. 2 ,000 dollars, Cristina. 2 ,000 dollars, Cristina. 2 ,000 dollars, Cristina. It is not being of the world, Luis. My turtle didn't come back. Don't be sad. Tell us and not friend like dogs. They're different. But he was my friend. But you're not expecting him to be
waiting for you. A turtle has his own life to live. Beautiful morning. A turtle has his own life. A
turtle has his own life. What's the matter, boy? You sad? Sadness is not good. It's a waste of time. I didn't tell a statue. You said it would make the engines happy. You lied. It is like my mother says. Your stories are foolish. Boy, you don't trade with the gods. You don't say I give you this if you give me that. Were you trading with them when you decided not to sell the statue? No. But... But what? Yesterday I waited. Today I waited. But he never comes. He has forgotten me. Maybe. Maybe someday if you love without wanting to possess, your love will find the turtle and it will come back to you. Even if my turtle doesn't come back, I'm still happy I didn't sell the statue. So am I.
What did you do with it? It is a secret channel. If I told, others would look for it. Maybe someday he'll come back. I'm still happy I didn't sell the statue. I'm still happy I didn't sell the statue. I'm still happy I didn't sell the statue.

Filmed on the Isla de Mujures, off the Yucatan Peninsula, this film, which features Gilbert Roland, Katy Jurado and Manuel Padilla, Jr., concerns a young Mexican who discovers an ancient Mayan relic and befriends a giant sea turtle. He is torn between selling the relic and protecting his heritage from profiteers. At first he desires to possess the turtle and sell the relic, but these rather selfish wishes are thwarted by his adult friend and fishing partner, Chano. Chano's gentle wisdom and his strong belief in ancestral pride and love without ownership, influence the boy to let the turtle go, and to return the relic to the sea. The climax of the film comes in the boy's resolving his inner conflict and his adopting somewhat the spiritual and moral values of his wise old friend, Chano. "The Boy and the Turtle" was filmed among the actual ruins of Tulum, an ancient Mayan city. The relic used in the film - a figure of a head - is a casting from a Mayan object in the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia y Historia in Mexico City. The film also features some breathtakingly beautiful underwater photography, filmed in the waters off the Yucatan Peninsula. "The Boy and the Turtle" was produced by Earl Miller of KLRN, Austin, Texas for the NET Children's Theatre. Screenplay by Eugene Poinc from a story written by Earl Miller and Larry Gilman. This program runs approximately an hour. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
