- A well-dressed patrician, John V. Lindsay was one of the most unlikely mayors in New York City history. And perhaps thats why New Yorkers elected him to office in 1965 after years of the same old machine politics. This documentary explores the mayoralty of John V. Lindsay by examining the pivotal moments during his eight years as Mayor of New York City from 1966-1973. In a city faced with growing crime, the loss of a manufacturing base, white flight, Vietnam War protests, and heightened racial tensions, Lindsay was an idealist who gave New Yorkers hope. But from the moment Lindsay took office he was hit with one crisis after another: the Transit Strike of 1966, which brought the city to a standstill; the nine-day sanitation strike that left mounds of garbage all over New York City streets; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1968 assassination; the Ocean Hill-Brownsville teachers strike, and much, much more. The Lindsay Years features interviews and insights from a wide range of historians, journalists, politicians, and members of Lindsay's administration, including Jeffrey Katzenberg, who started as a teen-aged volunteer on Lindsay's first mayoral campaign; Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; Mayor David Dinkins; Mayor Ed Koch; Mayor Rudolph Giuliani; Jimmy Breslin; Joyce Purnick; Congressman Charles Rangel; and Ronnie Eldridge.
