Description
Episode Description
Almost every facet of the art of the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland is explored in this highlight of NET's 1956-66 "Festival of the Arts" series. Drawing from the 18th and 19th century operatic repertory with which she had ruled the world of opera ever since her stunning debut at Covent Garden, London, six years ago, Miss Sutherland sings six arias by herself and then is joined for duets by two other outstanding singers of the day mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne and tenor John Alexander. The program is narrated by Terry McEwen, manager of the Classical Division of London Records and an old friend of the singer. Miss Sutherland and her husband, conductor Richard Bonynge, also join Mr. McEwen for discussions of the art of the prima donna and the art of bel canto singing. Bel canto, is of course, a style out of yesteryear that emphasizes a smooth, beautiful vocal line and the most tasteful of improvised ornaments, or embellishments. Miss Sutherland is largely responsible for bringing it to life today. This cultural special was recorded by NET in the studios of WGBH-TV, Boston, which allowed the erection of four sets for the this program one of the Cambridge Festival Orchestra conducted by Mr. Bonynge; one for an informal "at home" chat with the Bonynges; one an art gallery setting for Mr. McEwen's introduction and discussion; and one for a full staging with sets and costumes of the Act Three duet from Bellini's "I Puritani." The "at home" set also provides an opportunity for Mr. Bonynge to accompany his wife at the harpsichord in Paisiello's "Nel Cor Piu Non Mi Sento." The works performed are: 1. "A Soldier Tired" from "Artaxerxes"- Thomas Arne (1710-1778), which is sung during the introduction. 2. Waltz from "Crispino e la Comare" - Luigi Ricci (1805-1859) and his brother Federico (1809-1877). 3. Third Act duet between Semiramide and Arsace from "Semiramide" sung with Miss Horne- Giacchino Rossini (1792-1868). 4. "Nel Cor Piu Non Mi Sento" from "La Molinara" with Mr. Bonynge at the harpsichord - Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1818). 5. "Tornami a Vaggeghiar" from "Alcina" - George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). 6. "O Lieto Suol" from "Les Huguenots" - Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864). 7. Third Act duet "Viene Fra Queste Braccia" Between Arthur and Elvira from "I Puritani" sung with Mr. Alexander - Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835). 8. "The Gypsy and the Bird" - Sir Julius Benedict (1804-1885). An Hour with Joan Sutherland is produced by National Educational Television for its 1965-66 "Festival of the Arts" series at WGBH in Boston. This aired as Festival episode 6 on October 29, 1965 and as NET Festival episode 10 on February 4, 1968. This hour-long piece was recorded on videotape.
