I'm Dick Gordon. As a health care reporter, Charlie Ornstein probably has a better understanding of the complexities of the system than most of us. He spent a lot of time writing about the cost of health care and the political debate over changes that are now being proposed. When his mother was in the hospital though, he realized that most of us, his family included, are unprepared for the decisions that have to be faced. We've allowed political slogans and this whole completely manufactured controversy about death panels to prevent us from having a sophisticated conversation about end-of-life care. It's just traumatize them to be in this position and we boil it down to talking about the government trying to create death panels. These are real families having to deal with real decisions and we offer no support. Coming up on the story, Charlie talks about his own experience, being part of that family in the waiting room wondering what to do next. That's right after the news.
