- Transcript
This is a long version on the feature for Shannon Lucid, one of NASA's female astronauts, coming down in three, two, one. Six, five, four, we've gone for main engine start, we have it. The launch of America's first space shuttle in 1981 fulfilled a long time dream for the U.S. space program. Another dream is about to come true, soon for Shannon Lucid. She is one of NASA's female astronauts who will fly on the shuttle next year. Lucid is a college graduate with degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, going to outer space is something she has always wanted to do. Well, it's something I'd always wanted to do ever since I was a little girl, and that was a long time before America was in a space program, so I was in hopes that America would get in a space program. Then when America got in a space program alone, we'll hold the exclude of 50 percent of the population, and so I was always in hopes that America would come up to where I was. The Oklahoma native has a husband and is the mother of two daughters in a son, contrary
to what public opinion might be. Her family is not worried about something going wrong with her in space. They never occurs, I mean, they don't really think about anything like that, as long as they have supper, I mean, you know, but they have clean clothes in the morning. Their needs are minimal. Mrs. Lucid's wish will hopefully come true in the latter half of 1984 when she takes her place on the shuttle as a mission specialist. I'm Bill Edwards.
