Today BirdNote celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day officially marks the birth of the modern environmental movement. More than this, on Earth Day we’re reminded to honor the earth and preserve the balance of nature.

Few things remind us more of the fundamental need to conserve and enjoy nature than the voices of birds – the irreplaceable voices of birds.

From the ethereal song of a Wood Thrush in an Eastern forest [Wood Thrush song], to sweet whistles of a Western Meadowlark in a Midwestern grassland [Western Meadowlark song], to the tipsy warbles of a Black-headed Grosbeak in a California woodlot [Black-headed Grosbeak song].

And from the melody of an Altamira Oriole in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas [Altamira Oriole song], to the musical notes of a Greater Pewee in the mountains of Arizona [Greater Pewee song], to the haunted wail of a Common Loon on a northern lake [Common Loon song].

This Earth Day -- celebrate birds and the natural world they fill with music.
