j and k pierre presents we visited the new elizabeth dole is the typical institute of politics and kay mcintyre will also get a sneak peek at this a masters program at the dole institute also it's been an eventful week for president trump we'll revisit that conversation with journalist major garrett from his recent visit the dole institute major garrett is the author of mr trump's wild ride the thrills chills and occasional blackouts of an extraordinary presidency but first a visit with aubrey coleman she's the associate director of the dole institute of politics at the university of kansas a tree it's great to see you good to see you too happy new year having a year to you know this is an exciting time at the dole institute of politics i want to talk a little bit about some of the programs you've got kicking off with your presidential lecture series ever bring back when the dole institute opened the presents a lecture series and was generally speaking richard norton smith telling fabulous tales of power about various presidents based on different beans it's
gonna live interactive attraction this semester and really focusing on presidential rhetoric of presidential rhetoric and speechwriter to robin rolling in the communication this apartment here at k u has been our program coordinator and we're really excited to have really enjoyed working with him and so he has i helped us develop a slate of programs related to presidential rhetoric and speech writing that will kick off on the first week in february and continue once a week throughout the month of february and you can get information on all of the individual presidential lecture series events on your website that's right dole institute dot org and of course listen to keep your prisons we generally broadcast all of those president a lecture series of events as well and keep your prisons to the other and that's happening at the list to get the story out later on in the semester out where we're presenting an other series only folks are pretty familiar with that we have but thaksin but sales have a couple of the evening events coming up later on him and march in april one is going to be about
president eisenhower and his leadership on later on much later on at the end of april will be talking with dr david bolland who has written a book about the civil rights leader archer flesh arthur fletcher excuse me are and who was the black what republican and as arguably one of the civil rights must import civil rights leader they'd never heard of and so we really look forward to that discussion as well and the other common she's the associate director of the institute and we're gonna take it though walk out into this exhibit space that is through the glass doors and particulate yeah thanks ok were walking into the exhibit space at the elizabeth dole gallery and i have to say ivory i'm immediately struck by these two beautiful portraits of elizabeth dole tell me about yesterday's hour official portraits of elizabeth dole out one for her services now us department transportation secretary and the other one arm
for her services the secretary of the department of labor so later portrait said these are both by everett kinsler who was a a famous portrait is he's since passed away last couple of years but very prolific artists he did over three thousand paintings of politicians leaders celebrities and they're really they're really lovely this one on the left it's a beautiful picture of her but i love the fact that in the background there's a photograph a bottle yeah that's a really that's a really nice touch and that speaks a lot to their relationship and an awesome you know it's very very personally like any painting keeps kids are looking for something from someone of a surprise in the end the department of labor not easy a little bit there is that there's also a background painting there that maybe folks who come in and see if they can spot personality effect all leader told the schnauzer it's about the things about a bob i did this exhibit
is entitled what would a woman offer her country to me what that question is all about sure that that question is inspired by a question that locals with all i oppose herself in nineteen ninety nine in a speech and she is exploring her ob possibility of candidacy for the presidency and she said you know some people might be wondering who are asking you know what what i as a woman offer of my country and i'm as the laws were looking for things that are such as having seen the extensive catalog of her of her career before us for her to stand up in nineteen ninety nine and think that she needs to answer that question and i think you know speaks speaks at the time lance picks of the experience of women and leadership r n we have an answer right here and archives them and with this with this exhibit and so really trying to respond to that notion and i'm a lawyer she's got all she wants offer and that universal experience of women being asked to defend or re present
the good work that they do every day and that's a question that women in politics are still having the answer twenty years later absolutely so it's very relatable are you know in addition to all the first that we can we can we can count off on our hands on senator dole being the first woman to stick to serve on to presidential candidate cabinets she served in the administrations of five different presidents c was the first woman to head of the american red cross after founder clara barton when she started out in the nineteen century incredible arm and she's the first us under a female you us senator from north carolina as well and so she's really that's as we try to communicate in his exhibit has you know had to charter of course in so many ways for so many decades and that the same time it's striking that the that there's materials that show also wash u was moving ahead she was very conscious and each of pearls to find ways to mentor young women with
them you know the sec the deity the department of labor and employment mentoring programs select women who had potential and recruit women you know when they're hiring worker women from outside and really grow those rakes are women so that cheesy as works and make contributions and in many different ways and the thing that audrey com and she is the associate director of the dole institute of politics the robert j dole institute of politics and i'm just curious how did bob dole feel about sharing the limelight here he is in a very generous person when it comes to shun the limelight and i think you would say that we can only do more to showcase some girl was a post on her career andi thank you so much thank you get so great to see you always are talking to find out more at dole institute dot org and jay macintyre well there were keep your prisons coming up right after this
