- Episode Description
- Amidst a visual panorama of radio listeners in various settings, host Gleason begins part two of the Vince Guaraldi "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" journey to the top of the hit charts. Fantasy records execs, music authorities, and the pianist recount the events. Reports start coming into Fantasy - "action" on the disc is reported in Sacramento. Trade publications are listing the Guaraldi record as a possible future hit. The demands for the disc are mounting. "It's like building a rocket in your basement, setting it off and then getting your tie caught in it," remarks Vince. Fantasy is working at peak efficiency to keep up with its sales orders. They've got a hit - their first one. Viewers are shown hit charts noting the position of "Cast Your Fate--," as well as the now famous Fantasy ad with the heading "131/2 Years without a Hit." Afterwards, the participants offer their comments on the operation of "Top 40" radio stations and the pivotal role they played in fashioning "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" into one of the big money-making hits of 1963. Running time: 28:51 (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
- Series Description
- The three part series, with well-known jazz critic and columnist Ralph J. Gleason as host, presents an introspective look behind the scene of todays popular music business. It describes the preparation that goes into making records, the factors governing a disc jockeys choice of potential hit materials, the operation of so-called Top 40radio stations, and the meaning of a hit record to its composer. The series points up the unpredictability of the music business where an artist and a tune can zoom from the ranks of the unknown to the star and hit categories almost overnight. The artist in this case is jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi and the tune, his own composition of Cast Your Fate to the Wind. The effects of a recording success on Guaraldi, the changes that have taken place in his career and his future status as a big selling record star are examined by Guaraldi, music experts and critics, disc jockeys and the members of the pianists own trio. The 3 half-hour episodes that comprise this series were originally recorded on film. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
