Description
Description
Documentary on the lives and careers of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and dancer Anna Halprin, who are husband and wife. Their works are explored as manifestations of the "California aesthetic", as avant-garde art, and as expressions of their deeply held belief in art as a community activity. In addition to the Halprins themselves, commentaries are offered by their daughter Daria Halprin-Khalighi, dancers Meredith Monk and Yvonne Rainer, dance specialists Janice Ross and Richard Schechner, architecture specialists Gray Brechin and Ian McHarg, artist George Segal, poet/filmmaker James Broughton, and Teddy Kollek, mayor of Jerusalem. Among the events highlighted in the discussion of Anna's career are the founding of Dancers' Workshop in 1955; her avant-garde choreography of the 1960s, notably Parades and changes; and her continuing workshops in group movement, ritual, and healing. The numerous dance excerpts include: Martha Graham in Lamentation; Merce Cunningham at one of Anna's workshops; Anna dancing in James Broughton's b&w film Four in the afternoon; Anna's works Hangar, Procession (b&w), and Parades and changes (b&w); the documentary film The bust (b&w, 1969), which recorded confrontations between Anna's workshop students and people in the streets; Ceremony of us (b&w), a collaboration between white dancers from Dancers' Workshop and black dancers from Studio Watts, Los Angeles; Citydance, a city-wide dance event first held in San Francisco in 1976; and many glimpses of Anna dancing at different stages of her life.
