Judy: I’m an affiliated scholar in American studies at Canyon College.

Judy: Folk art differs from other kinds of art, in that, it represents a shared esthetic held by a group of people. It’s not the individual artist completely divorced from society, but someone who represents a culture or a community. It is always transmitted in an oral informal fashion.
Q:
Judy: Folk art is a kind of art that differs from other arts, in that it always comes from a community. It has people who have a shared esthetic. So, what their sense of taste is and what their social values are, are represented by people who respond to that esthetic. It’s the kind of art that gets communicated in an informal oral way rather than book training. Its hands on in an apprentice fashion between a master and a neighbor or a family member.
