from communication center at the university of texas at austin this is university forum magazine the forum is a public interdisciplinary meeting place with a wide ranging world of ideas opinion and analysis this week one man's view of the assassination of john f kennedy and of the investigation into that death in this first of a series on the kennedy assassination mark lane examines both the theory of a conspiracy to assassinate john kennedy and of the alleged fbi and cia cover ups mr lane a lawyer author and chief critic of the warren commission present startling evidence contrary to the findings of the warren report into the john kennedy death mr lane it is now of course fourteen years for since john f kennedy was shot to death for in dealey plaza dallas texas since that time the central
intelligence agency and the federal bureau investigation have conspired to destroy that basic evidence in the case have conspired to offer false information to the water commission and to the media house of perjury before the one permission for and have failed to in any serious way adequately informed the american people about what took place that day in dallas thirteen years ago for thirteen years ago john kerry was shot to death in dealey plaza practically twelve thirty pm i actually one hour later i actually four miles away in central joke with dallas police officer jd ticket was shot to death the fbi quickly said lee harvey oswald was responsible for both of those deaths oswalt was arrested and oswald was two
days later shot to death in the basement of the dallas police and courts building or lee was being transferred from one jail to another i should say at the very outset of our critique of the warren commission report that of all of the conclusions reached by the warren commission the major conclusions and the minor conclusions there is but one conclusion which is in action there is one conclusion which is accurate all the rest are forced one conclusion when ikea conclusion of the reed and the commission reached was its conclusion that jack ruby shot lee harvey oswald as you may recall that took place on network television and might have been difficult even for the water commission to deny he was after that most incredible tragic death that last one the third one in dallas but the response of the american people was clear they want to know what happened in the most
disconcerted about was taking place in the united states of america and so president lyndon johnson appointed a commission a prestigious commission headed by the chief justice of the united states too investigators the crimes to investigate the murder of john f kennedy the murder of officer tippit and murder of lee harvey oswald on january eleventh nineteen sixty four the general counsel for the water commission jamie reagan held a press conference in new york city at that press conference he said we have established a commission at a modus operandi through the commission and the evidence which reaches out commission will come to us through the six pounds which we have established and then listed the six channels through which the un commission was going to function as what he said every one
of these kernels has a senior lawyer in charge and everyone has no more junior lawyers is the assignments get into the six panels which orleans was to reach an admissions what did lee harvey oswald do on november twenty second nineteen sixty three and this was published were begun in the new york times the following day in january sixty four and it's relevant today is relevant because it was january sixty four it was the month before the first witness testified before the warren commission so we're not talking about the modus operandi established before any evidence has reached the commission had a little one when oswald one november twenty second amendment to the many oz was back around and with three we have the last word in the soviet union or expand some time and leave it as well in the united states marine corps we had spent sometime sort of the skits of fire assignment for pound of three
well maybe not japanese lee harvey oswald how they really get to the basement where it usually harvey oswald was involved in a conspiracy with others was he working with the dallas police well the question surrounding the murder of lee harvey oswald by jack ruby identify jack ruby's background and panel member six the efforts made by the secret service to provide effective protection for the president's that's how effective was that were what we thought we knew the answer to that question because the president had been murdered in spite of their work but many that the commission was going to look into that matters well when i appeared before the water commission following month i said to the chief justice that i had read the new york times on january twelfth and i understood the modus operandi the commission was operating under but that day and was i admired him and i thought it was actually very illuminating in terms of how the commission was approaching the case i said i were that
i'd been a member of your commission with all due respect that would suggest that i would've added one morning and he's a dream is dying would you have a cold as a bubble helmet the seven because you see that six are reading and i said i would do this assignment find out who killed president kennedy and who killed officer tippit because you say none of the six apparel satisfy the warren commission was established to determine the answer to those questions because the wire commission concluded through pantomime who won through its preconception its obsession with a preconception of lee harvey oswald's longo that would secure the information that it needed on the question of who killed john kennedy and who killed an officer to the commission had reached its conclusion before the first witness was called
like the case of the murder of dr martin luther king in the case of the murder of john f kennedy there has never been an investigation of a crime in memphis there was an investigation of sorts of the memphis authorities into the possible guilt of james earl ray in that murder dallas him in washington there was an investigation of sorts into the possible participation in the murder of john kerry by lee harvey oswald but in neither case was there an investigation of the crime of all the circumstances which are unlikely would have revealed at the outset proof of a conspiracy to commit this crime just think for a moment when the wire commissions was holding its hearings in the veterans of foreign wars building in washington dc right across the street from the states report says that in the six panels functioning up there in the upper floors are
poring over their material to parry their twenty six volumes of the relevant data talking to witnesses or nothing to say about the assassination which is the way the commissions work was put together a good example ninety percent of the witnesses to the murder of president kennedy were never questioned ninety percent of the witnesses the murder of officer tippit where'd never questioned and the vast majority of the road with a summer we are gospel will never question you might ask that wasn't possible in the absence of questioning the basic witnesses i was a possible for the warren commission to publish twenty six massive volumes of material what's old intelligence trick it's the concept of participation of the essential truth by the prime location and publication of a vast army of a relevant data and that was the concept realize what the warren commission the cia and the fbi let me give you example meanwhile commission published in full and i am a tank but to watch our show and the condition in
nineteen thirty eight of jack ruby's mothers to the document which i suggest would not be relevant even hadn't been charged at ruby because walt riot commission western silverman a professor raimondo oliver for festered university of illinois professor robyn oliver had written an article in which he said it was rejected by the john birch society of american opinion they thought it was too far to the right for them is what the article said the article said that everyone knows john kennedy was a conscious agent of the international communist conspiracy yet as of course was president eisenhower and harry truman franklin delano roosevelt and you say that kennedy went further it entered into an agreement with his
master's in the kremlin to turn the united states into a satellite nation for the russians at the last moment he said the theory goes that the last moment john kennedy decided to turn american and when he did his masses the kremlin of course so the kgb and the end to add here and eliminated him he said that's the theory and then professor mcconnell also however i reject the theory because there is no evidence whatsoever to show john kennedy ever decided to turn american commission voted over twenty five pages to the publication of that dribble and not content with that they then cole professor robert oliver as a witness to testify before the warren commission washington how long he testified in the limousine in which the president was writing there were five witnesses who were survivors jacqueline kennedy governor connally nellie connally and the two secret service agents
what was driving the car for festival oliver testified for longer than all five of those witnesses combine as indication as a test of the commission's determination as to what was relevant for its operation as take a look and leave it all sorts of backgrounds and own number two what we know about oswald with the wind conditions and the harvey oswald was a loner you know anybody the way when he was by himself never had a confidence has never worked with anybody certainly not associate with any american intelligence organization right mark commission's conclusions the federal bureau investigation and that commission got to tell us that lee harvey oswald was in constant communication contact with contract agency for the central intelligence agency and the warren commission commission forgot to tell us that we know that the fbi first as a man mrs pena pena testify before the warren commission was one of the leaders of an organization established by the central intelligence agency in the world and a group called
with free cuba committee a violent violent anti castro organization which operated through the leadership of congress bring yet who was associated with the central intelligence agency now a parkinson's cia confirming that to be true or partly at the cia but most opinion to work with when they worked for the fbi and he said that he testify before the warren commission's work for the fbi and supervised by special agent fbi new loans want a breeze i worked for him in the area of subversive activities anti castro to be that center in the new orleans area just last year was to pena appeared on the cbs television program mr pena said well i work for one big reason for the fbi in nineteen sixty three and new orleans there was another member us to work for the fbi work with me annie were forewarned agrees also many said was leave harvey oswald he said i never did
tell that to the warren commission when i testified he said i really couldn't because you see just before i was to testify want greece came into the bag which i owned in the french quarter says pena special agent fbi came in to them are recordings of thing he said of course i know that you know and ailes will work for me and i know we're going to test fire a couple days before the warren commission if you ever tell them the truth if you ever tell them that oswald work for me mr pena was the priest told him then quo i will get rid of your ass close quote and you took that to be a threat and when he testified before the riot commission he did not give that information to the warren commission because in the office of the fbi and it was that time running the office between the hours of midnight and eight am was a
tulane university student named william s walter who are studying political science at tulane university and he looked through the files of the fbi minorities office yet nothing else to do it's only permanent tulane university nineteen sixty eight it was an adult sleep on the floor reading books he's an assistant political science i just read all the files the offices of have to get into it the files were their walk is that they walk the disability fbi offices at least one man one fbi agent who's a burger that's our headsets possible break into people's homes plan is to get information put information is an enormous of course we had our man and he was very greedy should have the paper clip i could open any file drawer and a desk and a dark hole fbi office and so i open the door as i read the files and when possible you would find so so the gospels file us will work for us worked for us is working for foreign degrees working with arresting some of the
mansfield lucy's oswald working with them and the fruits of that work are reported and files of the fbi for someone running the office the fbi for nearly morning hours we're seeing that mature and who tells us now with that your show so awful work the fbi was one of the fbi according to carlos bring pa the offices of carlos bring a cast a cuban store in the french quarter have announced rate according to bring his testify testimony before the wind commission was walking in and he said this is my marine corps handbook know i know that you're a strong anti castro group yay you're the head of the free cuba committee is but you see fellows are not militant enough and i'd like to help you become more militant because i hate fidel castro i hate communism and i can be more militant and ben castro had figured out by force of arms and i would like to be the military advisor to the free cuba committee
we are all talking about driving adult castro becoming the military advice of the anti castro organization was working for the fbi now has in contact with someone from the central intelligence agency but to bring that maybe didn't know that was the cia as possible and that he had some contact during the same time however lee harvey oswald was in repeated contacts with clay shaw and david ferrier to contract agent for the cia job was tried in new orleans he denied that he was cia jury acquitted him truly believe that show and oswald and david sterry spent a great deal of time together jurors also that but they said that jimmy garrison orleans district attorney was unable to prove that your work for the cia and he was able to prove that we now have files on the freedom of information act the central intelligence agency which says the job was working for the cia going back to nineteen fifty five fine so is david farrier so now we have oswald in contact with carlos bring a clay shaw and david ferry three
come packages for the central intelligence agency while he's working for the federal bureau investigation hyundai lee harvey oswald goes out on the streets of new orleans just so they can ask the border in the french quarter and has in his possession that play for cuba committee literature how castro soto's big go pro castro literature hands off cuba says and he goes there it has another associate with them and two men are giving out literature there are two television crews waiting for possible to arrive channel for new orleans and channel sixteen hours if you think it's easy to assemble to tv crews and a city that has just three of them all together for someone for those crews to be assembled to watch someone give out literature on a major boulevard trial sometime i always used to get two television crews call him santa from a minute and tibetan literature with me would like to televise the goal that must have really slow than once i'm too close to show up there but
they were there a novel starts getting at this literature well a sudden cry was when your arrives on the seine it is awesome and oswald is immediately arrested about it being a crime can punch who knows well about the merger on task in your arms i was taken to the new orleans police station and while these areas said can i make my one phone call may said sure and a megaphone political especially the same thing that any one line comrade in the movement would do when busted by the police right for the special agent in charge of the federal bureau of investigation was a nascent of a special agent john quigley would be briefly harvey oswald truck the judge novel was released joe k now we have article the merger sometime thereafter a man named guy pastor died in new orleans and the city attorney's office was thinking that maybe there was foul play involves a search of his office conduct of their investigation we want to discover
what was divested divest it was the special agent in charge of the fbi in chicago rahm the office you know the biggest field job in the fbi's special agent in charge of the city chicago was at that time america's second largest city but the bottom god has to have the second biggest field jobs in the fbi but he quit one day after quitting much more loans and opened up a sleazy little detective agency facade of a sleazy part of turning his investigating there are charges of adultery between one spouse another divorce cases come down or away from special agent in charge of the chicago office of the fbi and after he died the district attorney's office examiners' office and found some interesting files which you would not ordinarily expect to find the office of a local private detectives for example what we really have filed showing the exact location of all american military installations in turkey or the pullman literary prize for the
invasion of the bay of pigs and wanting those cartons of an open carry on with the district attorney's office opened and found saying they're played the cuban committee literature and the harvey oswald had been giving out your arms sal there was oswald did not the liturgy was all televised i watch your was recently and now for the first time the media people in orleans are interested in securing some facts about the case and i was interviewed and when i was interviewed i said the images of all us some questions some made of cameron has a cheering lionel and so the interview was finished but we did a one hour program what was over i said to her was there from channel six who directed the interview vaguely filming of lee harvey oswald and exciting moment when he gave that would are trying to master a genocide that doesn't want to go there so i went there for the same reason channel four wanted to be both receive a phone call saying a very important that might take place and go there and film and we could be told exactly what it was particular informant
as inequality is no i was really a call by how spring it was working for the cia according to his testimony before the water commission he was in his store classical but a man came in and said so man is given out literature for castro you better find a month now squid and bring it justify it when out in the diagnostic and the funds offshore and that's what the pope it's also a sad according to channel for intentional sex bringing set up in advance then came and told him that for that we have oswald is in the he's in new orleans and then of course we can only got to dallas headed at the dallas man named gary taylor drove from dallas lee harvey oswald and drove them back the dallas when jeri taylor certainly testify before the wire machines that i did it because my father in law george marshall told me to do it he said oswald had to be brought to dallas is it my
take is that my father was said to be really frank with you if there was a conspiracy to kill john kennedy my father lloyd george marshall had to be part of her endorsement for the old man from someone samantha really interesting that very colorful background he was a reading of his testimony mr critchley been arrested by five fbi agents during world war two because they said he was a nazi spy and thereafter he was shot at by yugoslavian police because they said he was planning to assassinate marshall tito thereafter he was expelled from mexico because they said he was involved in espionage against the mexican government is another really interesting and colorful background and he is the man who we harvey oswald from new orleans thousand gotten the job in the book depository building on the president's motorcade route even before the rest of us knew there was going to be more like eight which one in front of the book depository building george marshall was associate the central
intelligence agency so that we find that almost every place lee harvey oswald those fees in contact with one or another intelligence organization united states and often he's in contact with both about two weeks before the assassination of president kennedy lee harvey oswald walked into the office of the fbi building in dallas texas and presented a letter addressed to pass a james hardesty that's the correct terminology stance especially jim james holmes diaz told the terminology already been around them long enough and the letter was addressed the host discusses his testimony last year before a subcommittee of the house judiciary committee which exercise the oversight responsibility was he said the letter was shocked when he read it he broke into a supervisor kenneth powerhouse of a sacred special agent in charge jay gordon chang class liberals especially in charge says shankman read all schools let it just two weeks before the assassination according to the testimony of the fbi
agent welcome supposed to check and read the letter a composition said to was to write a memo about this letter and so we wrote a memo to ensure that in his draw and we get to november twenty second nineteen sixty three and lee harvey oswald is arrested and mr shankman is on television saying the stranger has come to our town we don't know who is what we're going to look into his background he was on the sixth largest like this bridge and a fight all the shots from almost before the shots stopped echoing the sound of them stopped echoing in dealey plaza the fbi was lying to the american people did not know who was wall was he had his letter in his own desk drawer it had a memo about that letter which it would be written approximate two weeks before and we had that on the authority of the special agent fbi was involved in that transaction with mr shankman oh that oswald was arrested and as soon as he was arrested when we all see on television over and over
and over lee harvey oswald living out literature for the fair play the cuba committee pro castro lecture and that involved in an altercation
