Description
Description
"'The Merry Widow,' although part of the 'In Performance' series, is submitted as a special."The Merry Widow' is the first televised version of the San Diego Opera Company's English-language presentation of this light romantic operetta starring Beverly Sills in the title role. Acknowledged as a classic of modern light opera, after which dozens of musical works have since been patterned, 'The Merry Widow' is set in the fictional Petrovenian Embassy in Paris at the turn of the century. The beautiful Petrovenian 'Merry Widow,' Anna Glawari, has just inherited a fortune, and her compatriot Baron Zeta is doing everything in his power to make sure she marries wisely, so that her money does not fall into foreign hands. He would like Anna to wed the dashing Petrovenian Count Danila, with whom she had an ill-fated love affair years ago. Prospects for this union do not look bright, and the intricate romantic intrigues which involve several other characters at the Embassy humorously complicate matters. By the opera's end, Anna has been united with her true love, and her fortune has remained safely Petrovenian. "The opera itself was directed by Tito Capobianco, director of the San Diego Opera Company, from a new English translation of the libretto by Ursula Eggers and Joseph De Rugeriis, commissioned especially for this production. The production is intended for a general audience."--1977 Peabody Awards entry form.
