- Description
- Program Description
- "With an abundance of lakes and rivers to provide an almost perfect habitat, Florida ranks third in the United States in numbers of bald eagles. Since the bird is still on the National Endangered Species List, the efforts of people in this rapidly growing state to save our country's symbol are critical to the overall survival of the species. THE EAGLE RETURNS is a 30-minute documentary about the Florida Audubon Society's program to rehabilitate injured eagles and return them to the wild. "In late 1983, an immature eagle the Audubon staff named 'Nathan' and a mature eagle named 'Yankee' were brought to the Center for Birds of Prey, near Orlando, for possible rehabilitation. They both had serious injuries, but they were able to recuperate enough to be scheduled for release. THE EAGLE RETURNS follows the lives of these two lucky eagles as they go through the rehabilitation process. We observe the open field flying exercises, the feeding of live prey to hone hunting instincts, and a remarkable and painless process called 'imping' that allows the birds to be outfitted with new tail feathers. In early 1984, Nathan and Yankee are given their freedom on the shore of a pristine Central Florida lake, in release ceremonies that are both exciting and touching. "THE EAGLE RETURNS was taped entirely in Central Florida. Original music was scored for the documentary. It has aired on Public TV stations throughout Florida, and has been selected to air nationwide on the PBS Network in 1985."--1984 Peabody Awards entry form.
