Description
Series Description
"'Visions' is a series of original American dramas intended for a general audience. Each play presented on 'Visions' is an original, personal work by an unknown, or little-known writer. Artistic director Barbara Schultz, working under grants from the Ford Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, used many sources to find new writers and independent filmmakers for the series. She contacted novelists and writers in Off-Broadway and searched through 3,000 scripts submitted in the first year of the project. "The goal of the 'Visions' project is to give these new writers a showcase and experience in a medium many of them have never worked in before, thus providing a pool of talent from which American television and other creative mediums can draw. "The plays in 'Visions' represent many trends, beliefs and experiences in America's heterogeneous society. 'Two Brothers' by Conrad Bromberg reflects one man's inability to overcome his brother's alienation and desperation. 'El Corrido' by Luis Valdez concerns the link between present-day Mexican-American farmworkers and the illegal aliens of a few decades ago. Nell Cox's drama 'Liza's Pioneer Diary' is about a young woman who learns to stand up for herself and to be strong during an arduous covered-wagon journey to Oregon. Jean Shepherd's 'Phantom of the Open Hearth' reflects life in the 40's. 'Monkey in the Middle' by Betty Patrick is about a black woman's struggle to make a life for herself without her husband."--1976 Peabody Awards entry form.
