Description
Episode Description
In 'Chemical Accident,' reporter Susan Friedman and host/moderator Clete Roberts examine the issues surrounding a chemical 'spill over' that occurred June 1, 1979, at the Fiberite Corporation's plastics manufacturing plant in the city of Orange. Teachers and students at a child care center located directly across the street from the plant subsequently became ill. The plant did not advise the teachers, students or their parents of the accident, nor did they divulge the nature of the substances spilled when later asked by physicians and the Orange County Health Department. The focus of the program revolves around the question as to who is responsible for notifying and assisting members of the community who may become victims in an accident of this nature. Guests interviewed include: Marlene Angelos, Director, Child Care Center; Laura Summit, parent; Thomas Prendergast, M.D., Chief of Epidemiology, Orange County Department of Health; Jim Birakos, Air Quality Management District; and, Mary Nichols, Vice-Chairperson, California State Air Resources Board. Please Note: As a service to our hearing impaired viewers, all of KCET's locally produced public affairs programming is signed."--1979 Peabody Awards entry form.
