Description
Episode Description
The host discusses coeducational sports programs in schools with her guests. Physical education director Nick Bilotti talks about differences in funding for boys and girls programs and the capabilities and interest of girls in sports. Sports editor Debora Larned dispels the myth that girls' bodies are more susceptible to injury, particularly their breasts and reproductive organs, and that menstruation negatively affects girl's performance in sports. There is a film of a teacher discussing her experience teaching boys and girls in physical education with accompanying footage of children exercising in her class. The guests discuss the effect Title Nine is having on school sports at all levels and possible problems in making classes coed. Another film follows the discussion, featuring teacher and student reactions to making the programs coed. The guests discuss the possible impact coed programs might have on competitiveness of sports and what boys can gain from playing with girls. A final film details a school dance program that is made up of almost as many boys as girls. The program ends with the guests expressing their hopes that coeducational physical education will be successful.
Series Description
"Pat Sullivan introduces the theme of the show: Many schools are now trying to provide equal athletic opportunities for girls and boys by sexually integrating their sports programs. Her studio guests are physical education director Nick Bilotti and sports editor Deborah Larned. "Three film segments feature coeducational classes in movement education, gymnastics, and dance. Teachers tell how they developed these programs. Students talk candidly of their initial uneasiness and of the respect they have gained for each other. "The guests discuss Title IX, which prohibits discrimination in physical education. They speak of the law's impact on school sports programs and on students of both sexes. "This series was broadcast in conjunction with a teacher-training course, which WNYE-TV staff developed in 30 inservice workshops throughout New York City..."--1977 Peabody Awards entry form.
