Description
Program Description
"'AN AMERICAN ISM: JOE MCCARTHY', examines the early life and roots of the late Senator Joseph McCarthy, as well as the social/cultural setting which influenced him and enabled his rise to power. The documentary attempts to discover the man behind the politician by interviewing those people alive today--friends, business associates and fellow politicians--who knew him during his rise to power and fame. The film also attempts to recreate the political arena and times in which McCarthy lived. "This program was produced for the Wisconsin ETV Network by Catalyst Films and WHA-TV."--1979 Peabody Awards entry form. This documentary focuses on the life, career, and political ideas of Senator Joe McCarthy. Footage of McCarthy's speeches as a senator is included throughout the program. The program defines McCarthyism as it is known now, and it goes back to his childhood on his family's farm in Outagamie County in Wisconsin. Family friends and neighbors talk about what McCarthy was like as a child and a teenager, attending high school while running a grocery store. Classmates and coworkers detail McCarthy's time at Marquette University, the Milk Strikes of the Great Depression, and McCarthy's early political career as a circuit judge. Some of McCarthy's fellow soldiers discuss McCarthy's career in the Marine Corps during World War Two. The next segment of the program focuses on McCarthy's 1946 campaign for U.S. senator, followed by a segment detailing his early senate career. Other state officials and journalists discuss pressures to find communists in the government, the Federal Employee Loyalty Program, and the House Un-American Activities Committee. They also detail how McCarthy became involved in the communist issue and began his crusades against communists in the State Department. They discuss Truman's denouncement of McCarthy, McCarthy's continuing attacks, and the roles they played in supporting him. They also discuss the Tydings Committee Hearings and the aftermath of McCarthyism.
