the award and where it's a program delving into the world of books and there are fears this week constance currie talks about the silver writes your host for a word and words mr john sigg involved chairman of the freedom forum's first amendment center at vanderbilt university welcome once again to word on words this program as to start one is the author constance kerry and the other is the person about their wallet important people about a new book is written neighbors ricardo welcome both of you to word on words thousands thank you nice to have you here and labor it's wonderful to have you here other books called solar rights and that i said that turned the two new hero heroes of the civil rights movement and we can think of it now i think as the sole rights movement we go back to those traumatic days of the press to the right toward so
silver they were pretty bloody and that if we go back to the date when the neighbor up the card and matthew carter decided to take their stand and send their children as the freedom joy at all and they learned to do two white skinned through sunflower county mississippi those trouble with are not yet allowed to travel these hair a and shadegg in frazier being told that they should get off the plantation plantation house a few years ago you were say in your children and our rights to render a mississippi and nobody else was going to do that not a lot was festive on the senate passes through oh wow well presumably it would
allow all black children to go to strings of their chores or their parents' shoulders were that was sort of that was unrealistic from the outset yeah it really was the wind had a six under the civil rights act passed on and what what the provision meant was that if you wanted to continue to get federal funding you had to come up with the school desegregation plan if you would continue to get it and there is that there were a lot of plans that came out all of the staff and one ruling that found that a predominantly mississippi was freedom of choice that each school district could come up with you know whatever number grades but in true they say it will open up our twelve because they knew pretty well that that very few if any black parents ribbon a son that choice for me to where you are to send their children to the whites who now you know it it might be in this day and age he
had made the politicians so while not a main of what we were was keeping by parents from sending their children to all white school for change the command of the civil rights act was their lyndon johnson said that he wanted it to happen the federal government goes there to make sure that it happened if people wanted to exercise that right was slowed the problem people were less well armed and mcgrath has given you some idea what have only gotten about an la jolla the gulf the blood donation and then make up for credit in the store and they'd be an interesting thing is that as soon as a neighbor of his house shot into armed and everybody else who's even thinking about enrolling their children in line the white school making their choices are seven day window when you could enroll your children nobody everybody dropped the idea backed by the carter the seven car train with only
ones there now matthew he's quoted in the book is saying in it so why me why you wanted your children to go to the all whites to forestall clearly all white school was a far superior school in terms of the episode is that books he said if you pour a new black and that education got nothing and you'll feel strongly about their year with us going back every hour wait you know they get here and we went thirty the program but only media not a highway can mechanically apply the phrase that we write them on tonight you know you know if the session involved in this group and ask a new book tells about that i mean the school system was raised around you when you cut carbon when you pick up here so they go to schools that my chair and they were they were still you know come
september did you know and a black sheer and they had to be getting cancer than this day that a county home of the dam and that will allow them and so the academy said they all share and what they can and so the show when we were just going on them about fifteen of them airmen latham identify set to talk so when we always felt that maybe reward added a camp actually when his appetite the cancer to get up them are very occasionally this except i know the first thought to me and artie faced dubai to turn the opportunity came and they had gone off to war to the service are to the north for a job to live with their relatives but you still had this broom of a hotel experience your own that you wanted to have best education
and so you left you went in one day juju nights to where you know i say that the franchise paperless and they now barren narrow me and i am now the paper so we're told sharon to vote today has been hearing about elon musk and so they were a decade after a rain and then to pay for this event and he attacks and i'm not saying that you know rain and there where we came out we welcome masculine el national bakery very dirty paper bag always come in oh my mother wife turned my head when we take a
pact as they and that were excited and then how i relax and then you know one such a job unless the thought came knocking on a door song was the superintendent of the other plantation and he oversaw were sharecroppers and he came to know him when he said when he had an eu to come out on that that they found the body and he was in his pickup that he brought it home of the pic of heaven matt hartman to come out and man came out in indiana town to my home he says some battery from his crew to call him dead man that we and tell him that we hear you or i would share an old wives are why spend and he say he was shocked about the an event that lack of a ship alcoholic camp writers behaving in a damn mad mad mad max geron the algerian could
be that there's been a patient in nebraska knew that they could rise in aniak alaska to go on their own without that you're not that he would go out there we're working so really our now elmo way i'm going down to the bar known family oriented by manet way and alexanders and when that he had gone rancid a bar you might say is the capital where you live mr herman cain i have only begin to tear me about what was the bow saying our last at our blackberry when he was talking and he was talking to learn that wayne in fact how gay activist martha payout put on iraq again there's a debt he
said that they now think that nsa analysts say how this at the negro family of mcgraw then when i was a bad idea that engagement our sam well and just a magnet also some of the longer view the president say about the original off the war today moderates and i go through one man read a fairly say this kind of be a moment in the bank so he started three goals on balance in a bind a man damien and he say when he had told him and i say you may have a new gm is the time that that he can get me was cruising that you're into that the f o jacket the book the book says he said
alberto during the eliminated yeah yeah you know i a customs you were civil rights worker in those days and i notice in the book that you quote their snake will afford the mayor approved say in that any civil rights leaders caught in the city after dark would be put in jail for their own protection you and when of grain go around those dangers counties of mississippi a little volkswagens helping and encouraging people like may birth and matthew carter about what that life was like because you spell it out and blow well i was telling somebody of the day that i think it's more
scary in retrospect almost there was you know during during the time it be close we use cleared you know what what we were doing and we you know we were young and idealistic and we we knew that this was something that down and had to be done and i must admit that and that whatever was from mississippi us as she was used to pick up trucks with gun racks and i just never quite got into it at that site if you tell if say you're riding along the romans and she says is that a pickup truck years and she used to say to me she said it starts to pass say well it's real hard to get down low lower in a volkswagen out really as a cop so it never made you said when you said you know get them a little bit but aren't you know it was it was really something because we just would get our match and just get almost backwards and down
we never really had anything bad happened to ashley had more trouble in georgia couple times than the mississippi with people founders know after the shots were fired in the operator of the wharfs up on the floor for a while but the whole family on the floor to say below the line of fire and and then came tv division at the get off the plantation and at the stop sharecropping going to cut off your livelihood our power our mom when their pearl so why will ensue then last person on me a half of a half and when maliki say yes my guests amy movie in africa and that will laugh button on that we don't have to know that when man and now they have to get the family our family that went belly and they are banned and they don't say i love with you
the us in a brown as aaron been nice salmon thousand re humanize him know that abdullah cotton picking cotton curtain and dan heath say that now you tell mainly get the man and that's a whack him saying say that they'd shout out ran away and send him his book people in mississippi all money that was forty thousand and that in the mattress robin visit living in mileage if you were sick and needed it desiree let's get the dow's amy's get so we could we needed to endow so mahoney when actor banking get to endow then if our destiny in manama say you know your mother self always move illegal say this bar about so that so we head really did this week and elmo han know how
this point about now what would happen thousands of it hadn't been for a few people were scared fly my birth and matthew carter manna and a courageous you're hearing is all that question lakers silva rights movement had there not been people who had the guts and stand up against that sort of gunfire pressure then economic pressure well i i think that that's one of the things that i realized when i was working on the book that that most people don't realize that they are the civil rights movement in and with them the narrative march when the voting rights act and that it was our local people you know just ordinary people who are carried into who made that the laws like the civil rights act become a reality and on that if say that the whole intent of the druze school system has not only happen in some far can asian about mcconnell's out when many others on that
the intent was to make life a difficult to harass them intimidate them bounce right out of the school system meant to terrorize everybody else said no bs would try and i think this system would have remained down totally segregated until maybe would have had to be suitors sea bass you know i mean in all the cities we worked and we never saw anybody begin to the white power structure begin a white napkin overtime said let's have school desegregation so i think things would've stayed the same the authorities by a man i know and it's interesting to me that may not only now cheers the show's defense fund which is the most forceful advocate challenge rights and an end in washington dc and in the nation it's interesting made it all through what she wrote the
preceding this book she refers to member of the card as miss labor she never says labour and the next time i see marion man i'm not as for why maybe you know last thursday after that and she said that she was raised in south carolina an odd that she was taught to call of her all the women who were older than her nurse so and so and so i am a breath was always been his labour of had to marry him and always will be chaucer newspaper think of his day now it was in nineteen sixty seven i think that that marian wright edelman got into the act in this in this story over it by filing lawsuits on behalf of labor the matthew and that you're attacking the joyous ones who like he just said something that that that that that that action that legal action demonstrates this has fallen
sixty seven the year before lyndon johnson when out of office were well into the vietnam war by this time many of the people who are fighting and dying in vietnam are black robert kennedy is a year away but this term robert kennedy isn't the senate year waves from running for president himself looking back on it many people my thought may have thought or when president kennedy died and a lot of press when lyndon johnson came into office some sort of magic wand was waved and then civil rights became silver writes truth was the struggle went on it was not until long after marian wright follows the supreme court struck those laws now talk a little bit about that about the ordeal for a not only civil rights workers who continued to carry on the struggle but also people in other parts of the south
like i'm a burden had to take up the same struggle in their own communities well beyond iraq and african american friends service committee and we worked in so many communities but on the racy family would tempt alabama i can name name after name and not cede it talent the tampa quail ridge the rural areas where they withstood on her you know she isn't that the hands are burning i'd tell arson attempts and then the worst thing was the harassment of the children in the schools i remember hasan as elop the work right with me you know most crime one night he was white we said i will never ever recruit another black child to attend a previously all white school he said it's just too hard and the bread they can speak to the ordeal of her children talking about that first day when the school was supposed to run away you add in the way home when they were asked who i came
in that have happened after the butt of a lot of myths seven cheering very passe pafford festival is you know i would just say not take imagine an atlas they are made may get a lab would not like an owl multinational committee mr matte said last year and came home and i went out on a poet and that carried out one man juan antonio rios new book next day i'd be the same gang no they i was thought that krauss to me now i think i'm actually and then what that male one is a line in the book and says that scrooge are brought me to god crack and
now though that you're right to duisburg when iran's battered tyson and i was when last year without their skin here a day and they would come home and gm may someday and then tell you about the abuse they were on the air on our panel today and that this vote this time please let me i'm a laconic clean and mayhem we're doing as well as customs points out and whatnot maybe just tell our audience now as years of bats the courage of neighbors and matthew and recognize foreign why she's been honored well oddly i think that the the one that i really enjoyed the most i'm estimating when the steelers when i was invited back to the resting city where are seven of her children had them the new york city for their courage well
be higher than the one that won the war but i think i which mary might nominate air force a matter fact was in new york the end but the problem is really basic of jackie northam is it again yeah so that was well that was wonderful because it was a black african american are outstanding awards for african american mississippian son billy and james earl jones was there and i said well you need a black well i believe when you needed him a very unique about the era german national endowment army general jones pakistan got a big ovation and then he when my brother got up there he said well this is labor of the real hero and that was just wonderful and she got a standing ovation from the audience of the unrest in the city which is up there behind the podium speaking about the importance of education it was really in our kids were there
and her grandchildren's thirty one grandchildren a lot of where they are and it was really a great day when you are andy herren and wonder woman wore been singed and when i go back to drilling because on his car is really very well respected now in her own country i mean they don't you think the and now when you got that i i always well you know our idea know wow i went and i wonder will vacation to mature so when they spiked out now way out there like a gun at their wives and he's seen them then match the talented candid and then the lab was to head the faa to be so that you had the one man as saying that you know white people the dollar's something that they planned but then we'll respect for you say we are up there is in the book matthews did not die very
suddenly liane and live a great life and great courage but there is a beautiful tribute in a book that comes from his family's children talk about that confidence well first i went back to his city in eighty eight when i hadn't seen me briefly about thirteen years i asked him to take me two nephews great because i like a lot and so when we got back i miss carter said would you like to see the eulogy the children's eulogy and so i looked at it and i was attached because in a way that economists need my own father of the kids that he respected and loved hard work and but he loved his children and they meant so much to him and taking notice of the end of each of those are the readings from the thirteen children it says archer the best father berrigan that could possibly be it always said that when we were happy he was happy when we were sad he was sad and that this was
you know so much of him so its size just very very moving but what happened when each of the thirteen children you adjust their father mathew and looking back on it now neighbors to how they feel about the ordeal they went through a proud of that it and we read a narrow their brand are they have they let's say you pay for in all what we probably and should turn briefly do left austin says a moment about the title the book silver writes looking back on it now you can call it so widespread and civil rights was the time when you called civil strife road and civil rights
i had known before i read your book that it come from alice walker talk about the title i think i actually know this with my own ears it's the term silver writes and then i noticed that alice walker in search of her mother's garden said although i value the civil rights movement deeply i've never liked the term itself it has known music it has portrayed it makes one think of bureaucrats rather than of sweaty faces eyes bright and big for freedom and marching feet older black country people did their best to instill what's accurate portrait they could into this essentially white civil servants turn said that what one heard was silver and i came to think of it too because we were working on the rural area and say yes we want silver writes for our children and
so the concept constance carey author of silver writes as ben our guest on the word underwear heroes to then john c involved chairman of the freedom forum's first amendment center at vanderbilt university this program was produced in the studios of wbez n match going
