- Episode Description
- Crime and Punishment, one of the greatest murder stories ever conceived and written, is the work of nineteenth century Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a master of the psychological novel. The actual novel, Crime and Punishment, although containing both the story of a crime and its ensuing punishment is as one sided as its title. The crime committed is a murder by a poverty-stricken student who feels justified in killing a much hated avaricious old money lender and her sister, yet the crime plays but a small role in the novel the story is concentrated on the students punishment -- his nightmarish visions of his crime and his fate, his emotional strain and the agony he suffers as a cat-and-mouse struggle develops between him and a relentless police investigator. The key set of the play is a 32-foot staircase which was designed to enable cameras to follow the student on his suspense-filled ascent to the apartment of the moneylender. CRIME AND PUNISHMENT: a 1966 presentation of National Educational Television: a production of Rediffusion Television, London. This aired as Festival episode 23 on February 25, 1966 and as NET Playhouse episode 33 on May 19, 1967. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
