- Guests for this ifrst episode are trumpeter Jimmy McPartland and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, who died a short time after the program was recorded. McPartland does a vocal in ?St. James Infirmary;? Hodes joins in for ?Meet Me in Chicago,? which features Russell; and the guests also team up for ?China Boy,? ?Oh, Baby? and ?Love is Just Around the Corner.? Hodes, a native of Chicago, played in his first jam session at the age of 13 with a nine-year-old named Benny Goodman. As a young Dixieland pianist he played with Art Tatum and Earl Hines in the beginnings of Chicago jazz. ?Jazz Alley? is a presentation of National Educational Television, produced by NET?s Chicago affiliate station, WTTW. - The six half-hour episodes, hosted by pianist Art Hodes and produced by WTTW, Chicago, each feature a different jazz combo in the Chicago style. Art Hodes plays host each week to one or more guest artists associated with the Chicago school of jazz. The episodes are staged in a specially constructed night club setting.
