Episode Description
Since 1962, New York?s famous Plaza Hotel has been the home of one of America?s most celebrated topical reviews, Julius Monk?s PLAZA 9. The stage at the Plaza is postage-stamp size, and the company is small (from two to eight depending on the materials), but Monk?s style and influence are, and have been, enormous. In fact, he has been called the creator of sophisticated caf? form in the United States. Certainly, he is one of the original producers of this form of entertainment in this country. (Among notable alumni from Julius Monk reviews are Liberace, Imogene Coca, Tom Poston, Jonathan winters and Tammy Grimes.) From both his current production and from outstanding numbers from earlier reviews, Monk has assembled this hour-long color program, taped on location at the Plaza. Some of the subjects, handled with hilarious irreverence by the satiric group, are the coming political campaign; the new morality; singles? bars; psychedelic drugs; Charles de Gaulle; and the Great Society. The cast is made up of Mary Louise Wilson, Rex Robbins, Terry O?Mara, Liz Sheridan, and Alex Wipf. The host is Julius Monk, and the accompanists are Robert Colston, Otis Clements, and Baldwin Bergersen. ?NET Playhouse: Julius Monk?s PLAZA 9,? is a National Educational Television production.
