- Episode Description
- This episode is a study of the return of the spirit of romance to contemporary poetry, as exemplified by poets Robert Duncan and John Wieners. The portion on Robert Duncan is set in his home important in a study of his work as his poetry comes out of the environment in which he lives. The work he reads includes The Architecture from a work in progress and excerpts from A Biographical Note and A Statement on Poetics. Robert Duncan was born in Oakland, California in 1919. He co-edited The Experimental Review, 1941-40, taught at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, in the 1950s, lived in Europe, and now lives in San Francisco. He is one of the leaders of the so-called Berkeley Renaissance. John Wieners, who studied under Robert Duncan, is filmed reading from his poetry in an environment out of which many of his poems were created, the Hotel Wentley in San Francisco. But since the hotel has now been destroyed by fire, he reads among the debris A Poem for Painters from The Hotel Wentley Poems. He also reads Cocaine and an excerpt from an as yet unpublished and untitled prose work. USA: Poetry - Robert Duncan and John Wieners is a 1966 production of KQED and National Educational Television.
