- The Classical Tradition is a television re-construction of the essence of the 1958 conference of the American Council of Learned Societies, whose theme is The Present-day Totality of the Classical Tradition. The special will consist of three-hours of programming, so designed that it may be presented as three 1-hour episodess, as two episodes (one of two hours duration, the other of a single hour) or as a full evening of continuous programming. The elements in the programming are: 1) A concert reading, by a professional equity cast of Sophocles Antigone; 2) A production, with costumes and scenery, of Anouilhs Antigone; 3) An art exhibit, showing both works of the 4th Century B.C and contemporary works which show classical influences; 4) the performance of contemporary works of music by Samuel Barber, Bernard Haiden and Semour Shifrin; which are based on classical themes. Commentary by noted authorities in the classics will be used as connectives to point up the significance of these works of art for the present-day audience. Th purpose is to acquaint modern viewers with masterpieces of the Classical Tradition and to show the vital role which the classics still play in our lives today.
