- Episode Description
- Carlos Chavez, the Mexican composer and conductor, is the subject of this hour-long program. It was filmed in San Diego during a rehearsal of the San Diego Symphony while Chavez was visiting conductor; in Mexico City, at Chavezs home, and at the Palace of Fine Arts; and at Dartmouth College during the rehearsal for the premiere of a work by Chavez. Aaron Copland said of Carlos Chavez, He is to us very Mexican indeed, a kind of symbol of the best side of Mexico, a vigorous powerful personality, a very keen mind and taut strength and power which is in his music. Chavez, who has now limited his musical activities to composing and conducting, reminisces on his early life when he singlehandedly brought modern music to Mexico by introducing such composers as Stravinsky and Poulenc. Later he created the Symphony Orchestra of Mexico which was the predecessor of the National Symphony Orchestra. He headed the federal department of fine arts in Mexico, was the director of the National Conservatory, and taught composition to a new generation of Mexican musicians. During all this time, Chavez has continued to compose and has traveled widely in the United States, South America and Europe, bringing his own works to the major orchestras of the world. Carlos Chavez is recognized as an accomplished conductor as well as a composer, and a major portion of the film shows him at work with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in a rehearsal of his Fifth Symphony for Strings. The Film also includes excerpts from Sinfonia India and, briefly, from his recent work, Soli No. 4, shown in rehearsal for the premiere at Dartmouth College. During the course of the film Chavez reveals his strong commitment to growth and to action which led to his complete involvement with all aspects of musical life in Mexico in the past fifty years. NET FESTIVAL Carlos Chavez was produced for NET by the KQED Film Unit, San Francisco. This was broadcast as NET Festival episode 15 on March 10, 1968 and as NET Festival episode 76 on July 1, 1969.
