Description
Episode Description
In view of the seventy-six-year-old dancer?s recent announcement that she will not perform again, NET will present a 60-minute adaptation of the NET Festival 90-minute special ?Three by Martha Graham.? The Fanfare program includes performances ?Acrobats of God? and ?Seraphic Dialogue.? ?Acrobats of God? -- To their contemporary biographers, the early Church Fathers who subjected themselves to the discipline of the desert were ?athletae Dei,? the athletes of God. This is Martha Graham?s fanfare for dance as an art ... a celebration of the trials and tribulations, the disciple, denials, glories and delights of a dancer?s world ... and of the world of the artist. Miss Graham performs this work with her company. ?Seraphic Dialogue? is a drama about Joan of Arc at the moment of her exaltation. In a dialogue with Saint Michael, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret, whose voices have guided her toward her destiny, she looks back upon herself as a maiden, a warrior and a martyr, and transfigured, is taken up to her place of honor. Fanfare -- ?Two by Martha Graham? is a National Educational Television presentation. It is a Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance production, adapted for the camera by John Butler. The program was made possible by grants from the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations. The filler broadcast along with this program is entitled The Stamp. This Polish-made, animated, color short is a surrealistic satire on bureaucracy. In it, a man enters an office to have an application stamped for validation. Since there is no room on the application, the clerk stamps the applicant, covering his whole body with the notation, ?Official Document.? He is then record as out of the file. The film is by Edward Sturlis for Featurette Film Studio and comes from Celebrity Holdings Inc. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
