- Description
- Series Description
- Inspired by the encyclical Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) by the late Pope John XXIII, there assembled in New York City recently some of the worlds outstanding scholars, intellectuals, and statesmen for an international convocation to examine the requirements of peace in the last half of the Twentieth Century. National Educational Television cameras were present at the 4-day convocation, sponsored by the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions and conducted in observance of international Cooperation Year. The primary concern of the secular convocation was to deal with the passages in Pacem in Terris which centered on the minimum conditions which must be met for the survival of mankind. The underlying theme of the convocation was not to resolve the pressing issues threatening peace, but rather to cast light upon them and to establish guidelines that peace requires. Among the topics focused on at the convocation and presented in episodes of this series are A European Settlement which examines the issues of military confrontations, nuclear proliferations, and the crisis in Germany and Berlin; The Institutional Structure which explores issues of national sovereignty, international organizations, peace keeping, and the rule of law; Mutual interest and Mutual Trust, discussion of ideology and intervention, the limits of non-military conflict, and change versus the status quo; The Non-Nuclear Powers, dealing with issues of national independence versus international dependence, alignment and non-alignment, economic disparities, and political instability; The View from the United Nations; and the implications of Pacem in Terris on United States policy. Opening and closing commentary for all episodes is by Harry S. Ashmore, executive committee chairman, of the Center for Study of Democratic Institutions. The convocation was conducted in observance of International Cooperation Year. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
