- Series Description
- Dr. Frank Baxter, Southern Californias well-known authority on Shakespeare, is presented to local television viewers. Named by LIFE magazine as one of the top ten college and university teachers in the nation, Dr. Baxter gives a series of lectures entitled Shakespeare on Television. When first presented in the Los Angeles area through the facilities of KNXT-CBS, these lectures drew an estimated listening audience of 400,000 persons and brought to Dr. Baxter the Sylvania Award for the nations best local educational television program. Selected for national distribution by the Educational Television and Radio Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the series was part of an inaugural program package which included such other distinguished series as Great Ideas by Dr. Mortimer J. Adler, the New York Herald-Tribunes high school student forum, a series of thirteen episodes dramatically demonstrating peacetime uses of atomic energy, and an archaeology series for the layman produced by New York University. Dr. Baxter was a professor of English at the University of Southern California. He received his bachelors and masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his doctors degree from the University of Cambridge. - Shakespeare on TV consists of 47 45-minute episodes broadcast in 3 seasons (Season 1: Episodes 1 - 15; Season 2: Episodes 16 - 32; Season 3: Episodes 33 - 47). It was produced by University of California KNXT-CBS and was initially distributed by NET in 1956. It was originally shot on kinescope.
