Description
Episode Description
A look at the nomadic camel herders of Somalia, located in Africa near the Red Sea, the episode focuses on an eleven-year-old camel boy, Ismael. Ismael and his family depend on the camel for their livelihood and as their main source of food. They must travel, sometimes for many miles, across the dry, arid land looking for pasture for the camels. Ismaels daily job is to walk his herd to a grassy area. The culture and religion of the Somalis are revealed. These people believe in Allah, the supreme being of the Muslims, who decides their fate. Cleanliness is an important part of their religion; they pray five times a day and wash themselves each time before praying. Each time the nomads settle in a new site, the women build their houses. A Somali man would never dream of taking part and would, in fact, not even know how to build a house. Ismael is taught to read and write Arabic by a nomad teacher who is part of UNICEF and Somali government project to help children in the country get a formal education. His teacher encourages him to attend the established school in the town of Hargeisa. However, Ismael is only able to visit the school after walking seven days to reach Hargeisa when his father goes there to buy a camel. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
