in a national educational television presents a special for children in war ii my name of rock and today we're going to talk about papa will of most of your puppets are in fact maybe we even played with a double but we're going on now one of the nice things about pop but you know as a chick lit it your own and analyses we can make it do anything you want to write about is not your book about the mormon to do that through dance and good but what about the movement of a wait wait because that's an easy way you to give everybody a way that a problem than a puppet wave back links
below oh what'd it goes on i don't care what you know what do so don't do anything we the world before he did with that steak are killer my name is jim henson puppeteer called a puppeteer because i worked with puppets on my own i might a practical markets don't think you saw the beginning of the show the muppets are all kinds of puppets which are large and for smaller stranger and i said yes it will and puppets are one of a kind of what we call a bumper crop of work without end and you usually put
your hand into it like this what your index finger into the foam into one and another finger and we're like oh they're outside and puppets one of the other main consequence of all the strength of another name for strength marionette and there's a variant in this work by strings from a bottle with wooden control which is no one other puppeteer jerry jewel well a nice things about strength of it is that you can show up from head to toe so we can dance around the ground and open space as opposed to a hand puppet which is usually go to waste right right rebel side the hands up and strain the third main category of puppets colorado and here's a rock pop but from afar our country called job of iraq others were
usually with one rally goes up through the body into the head and then there's another rocket goes to each hand are some very complicated brought up with this particular was very simple thing now woodside these three categories of puppies are a lot of other kinds of archival record another pop here he has a finger pop up or pop when his work with two fingers of your hand becoming the likes of the pop up at one light and the puppet hello body on top of the fear and the hands of the swamp our work by straight says the ballet dancers so it might be political events where where it right so that's a bigger problem which is one of the many ways
we have to control or various kinds of puppet regime it's amazing you know there were laws that were so many different ways of work and puppets you're with are really only three basically bronze strings and hands you can have all kinds of combinations of these resident you can have it but also have lots when jim was real lot different kinds of puppets was an architectural europe will have a cure for you were apart richard yours is thank you regular
parties oh you think that a great deal but your role that you would still you're a puppet i can prove that you ought to just you know don't know anybody underneath down there that's about the kid your mother oh no oh no i can't find a good group oh oh oh you know the puppets for almost as long as the people that are with those are a long shadow puppet like this one from india says the public has made up whether those end of the
year when you were to want a puppet show show starts weight and goes for a lot of men who were there were many other up with developing there's one here that we have witnessed will there were talking points over the years strange him with the beginnings of her friends in their area that's the us mexico and the us in your character an extended violence in the particular problem with over three hundred years old there are probably literally a handful omar worked with a wooden leg of the chair that's how the beginning of all
of the cops in this country came from a puppet character whole bunch of plenty of punches been around for over three hundred years when joseph o'neill character with a high squeaky voice he sounds like that so she was always a quote worse the equipment which we would be up in the character's military or we go with slapstick and it's made into pieces limit to guess it makes a loud noise when you're still so we were always several other characters into question one of these was the crocodile the crocodile the beginning of certain other characters like ali
ali macgraw balance us they're very loyalty of these reactors they're all different countries in europe each have to develop their own sort of national park that you wrote was like a punch in russia they had a terrible patricia you're in france they said thirteen your insulated lunch you know and in belgium they have a character like this won't change it charges were very similar another work the same way as the sicilian truck it's a sicilian father this character is really on very
strong horrible so that when he would have fights with other night with that character was killing all across the state but that said i think people simply the mayor and the police don't live never speaks to italy's think schiphol the sunday paper man to
move early june heat day oh that's the proper tree
upright because now so far on the show we've shown in many different kinds of puppets different ways of working but as i told you the beginning of the show while actors called the market's role that you like to explain what the markets are well of course the markets are a special kind of puppet a human eye in a moment but as joan so cruelly pointed out to me a few months ago but really i want to think of all the markets will likely not certainly not for example me and the issue to a friend of mine is correct either not common is also a mop but i most certainly rem so as you can see so more handsome dashing appealing lovable and good looking and owners kermit is just funny look on arts what's that going to lead to have gotten awfully for all the local bar to a new survey of the
long eared much mona you learn as like saw ping pong balls and i don't know it are you eating a porno listen wrong at least kind of romance so it doesn't live on sticks see it carried part of most that you gave in the cleanup what do you do oh you're handsome permit for one thing you have a very strong jaw on to write my co founder of the receiver here ping pong balls no i mean i was before the human evolution has given or loses more of the market though you'll be interested in it and they do that was more about the muppets my pencil good looking for i'm very very interested at our peril actually there are a lot of different kinds of markets they come in all shapes and sizes and just to give your idea here
if you breed glimpses of storm updates celeste muppets are very few so mobile for oberlin will like a word some of us even out more than one hat and you know what they say gain as around orion scott the class all i had just cast the magic spell up i knew into segments everyone watching this program will turn into a broad land to rats and anyone turn into one time why did they used to be and in some brands or remember you when you were up rates look better of all wrong our iowa new muppets will shape up or i'll get you a route them up with a mop people are really doing at the border and to answer was snapped row for years mr royal snap on
people join what's is or or or four or four or more so there's some of them was actually one of the things we're best known for is our monsters solvers a groove armada monster as the last three so yeah anywhere market watchers government will revive the size of small monsters and with that indian's a lot of them with a gun it's awkward
thank you the yodel sendak i mean they elected chair of the assist the work she's six kilos of mystery he's a good kid the princes well i want you to bring out only a excuse me minutes he put the
gun or wrong book of little red riding hood posed a great cinderella goes to a big old the prince's give him fast oh yeah if you're nasty ok will i'd hear my name is hansel me you use what do you all know i'm a lawyer and handsome no one would have so
your own ranks poor sure brought you do see is over a year as soon grow when walking through the woods to go oh yes that revealing i you or your voice finally there you're right it might end audio to help with the like me well would love to hide gravel well come in your girl holm odd with grief rosenthal oh yes i imagine the things but there's definitely still an sell ads on me curator of israel as libyans who were hoping to be in the solar
panel which is pretty wild oh well i may be but she had very special cow she joins us sure you were shelia panel that will jump jump girl leader moon moon river and you go straight guest graham gray was the answer was that all her interest in the cia defected during a story about cinderella bring your granny of festivities all right who is it
granny what does that requires what are words that story ok we'll know who the sunday world anyway he was so hungry after her long long red cinder blocks zetter i don't taste of oregon a great legal well probably as bunny
it's a major coup new york state this is what it looks like when you're going on a television show
we stand up here before and were watching a television set here are doing a show so we can see what we're doing and this particular show we were doing there the lines we realize we're doing it sometimes we work hard with the show memorized and sometimes we worked to a record a record via audio track and went back we have the puppets one here we have our microphones this one i'm wearing a microphone here on my hat if you'd like to see what it looks like during a show will play back a little bit of the shows that you can see what it looked like the backstage lore were doing it last year ok oh this get out a little story booker and our review historian home about the cinderella stories and around so i'm hearing russia got
an assistant loan he's exposing missed the lesson well he's a good kid so now i have some very important new for you know a supposedly we're all about the real ball with the prince is good sarah rainey is not feeling where i wanted to bring her a mascot a good investment monies what does not in the story oh mr latimer well let's stop the story arcs in our new body lonely excuse me live with to see a vital role as little red riding with people to grainy cell center raul used to go to all that the prince is giving free bowl of porridge requires okay here it is now i'm sorry bebe bebe
and so senator olympia paul abortion itty bitty babies and when i went there i was probably the three bears would those of song my own now that's our hour at night these were drugs and maybe it was a little like a
very nice quote very cruel and listen from now on trial not the law in tennessee that would offer law issue with your wife dinosaur puppet maker and he also does all of our special effects guy in that last bit beyond that one special which was when the yacoub turned into the fairy godmother plan which already was a simple robert rubin and playing final a little tape on the top two alive if you will the power of this to just gotten a steady stream
so we put it on the tape on here to sort of dispersed didn't make it into the ground when he wants to watch users really talk about or you know we try to talk about it doesn't have any sense that they're going to all smiling babies a curator at the same time we did that affect on the show used the sound of an explosion which they used to record in a control room and other kinds of special effects are things like if you do the thunder and lightning or do water or fire or some things like this when you try to create these new show it's called special and always ask the show great deal of mixes up until a lot more exciting odd also bizarre puppet builder and out we might show a little bit about the kind of characters we usually use in the markets thought we were done with our hand in the head during a mouth like this and
then we work with rods and gone you know what the character what kind of unbelievable well first of all i usually start with a sketch of gems and it might be nice if you could do a rough sketch of our problems is away i get scattered like the same side less oil purchase a snack that might be a side man they might later on put their ninth ward character and that will say a body like this which are usually are also get gone on to say it's nice
to know i just want to say that i i rely on jim's sketch a great deal to capture the essence of the lot it's a pretty vague they exist in the initial sketch and then we take a ride from the sketch i don't make patterns like this is the pattern and then i have another pattern on the phone a phone bought the material to most of the muppet characters are made from europe info which is this is just a piece of that and sort of like oh robert if you know if for robbery is that you're thankful it's a plastic full minute acts just like for reflection or we realize it's going to be that these puppets are probably more complicated than puppets which you might get a logo similar professionals but later on the show show you how to make a very simple paradox
the first thing i really make is the mouth to mouth is this is that the sort of foundational puppet and then from there i go to the phone and i put the context it meant which i have already put on these visas just a plain commercial complex meant to end right now sure you only really police businesses all dry at complex images was like rubber cement you put it on first and then you let it dry for a few minutes after driving a stick together that's a good way of laying out things like all nice thing about content visit we are very very different and i think there is
there's a couple of years i know you've referred to your awkward on just thinking of the boys and girls of uncertain for a long time and maybe they like a good long stretch you know for you once wrote that show about that they're blowing up and stretch or get when you stand up stand up for it was gauche duran the boomers will be ok one more done really nice true tale well your version
i think it's a sit down one set no comparable to go look there are i jump i guess bob luddy and i really are official like iraq you know we i have a lot of fun playing with the characters were developing a puppet and we have here a southern colonel my character that we love you were sort of role are other characters to pursue i'm working the left hand of the head and i'm looking the right and i've never really figured that out before and you know we're going to do is we have some features years the eyes and nose and so forth we're going to play with these different features in n rearrange them and see if we can come up with several different characters in the course the next few months so forth
did you know that already the iraq like this will happen when the we are and i know you're making a character like a political signal a member and no wonder the arrests and thirty one second my grandmother nevada folks weren't you understand that you do it
really does crimea doesn't rhyme there are what we're doing we're just putting these three features on with the bass play music review of the state the future that's big money or we take the same lies and the we could turn them over and end up with one a different character issue to
issue we need a man for years here was crying on top of very very narrow very name you can say just by rearranging the various features we can make in many different kinds of characters and he had a cardboard reporting on and so if you were if you worked with puppets to play with are you rearrange that
they you know different ways of making a character hey that's right you know i'd like to see some really unlike a lot of seeing a lot of this co op leslie sabo do you know a couple years ago and something that you wouldn't ordinarily think of a puppet to pieces or rubber workplace trains and then the companies are and puppets can be as simple or abstract or they can be very complicated there's a drill team that we met years ago also to rubble
mr sewell very very they fire off and sell at the beginning of her and we talked about rockwell we talked about very simple rock up with little of the very complicated problem for the work world leader is so reporters like the soldiers and what you dont
have to have complicated but the puppets can be a simple or complicated though in the following the news there is just a couple of reasons kingston
it has been and the long holiday and eight
ms baer with the piano you know so you can see from the last that that you don't really need any elaborate puppet show you can use just your bare hands would like to show you how you might go about making some very simple pockets we've taken the music three we
are here there's a company that we like to use the listserv about the very simple and just like the world where they're in a nice town tries to have it in greater peril so we're inviting a fabric store looks like urban environments are very reasonable lowe uses there all season start a
coffee cup difficulty go pay for two year roller coaster just a year later you could take a mortgage interviews with styrofoam is making the rounds and that's where you don't even have to have a restart to make a puppet just on a paper for the paper to replace our
hands ms rivers one only do you want the job using some of the recent characters we made in the kind of show that you might be able to give one someplace
far away in a time long ago on a throne room ticking name was a swell and had a daughter named gwendolyn no one making threat of princes in the throne room discussing matters of state a pretty good job on this particular day who should arrive with a young boy with the feathers had named charlie you know now now or c word well she wanted to talk about it either way or don't care all that i am charlie young boy getting i had come to seek my fortune i wish to work in house over
will involve a wonderful well that is always a lot of job was the third assistant helper to the deputy janitor i like that your order you work sixteen hours a day to get paid six cents a year after the us ground on a little screen in the royal gardens and so the weeks went by and charlie worked very hard and one day the king impressed us we're discussing things of great importance very important border when suddenly you a very strange event took place so and so is out of five iconic you
trust your pardon one reached this policy it's belongs to my family my grandfather once had a cave on this very spot so pack up your castle and get out you have to know a couple of humans who are you i mean it all mean which will go far away from his only of applause inside our economy as well the next morning
it is august that we asked to perform live we get on the end point he's a present form of color well i think if it has been at christmastime every nine ninth year and i put the box in the corner well i mean when you work can be everywhere for me iran
it is i'll ring
i mean you and your father has been viewed by the dragon older brother rick warren well of writers and wanted to be of grievance on a wild ride in a cd of the video which are yes you anymore our
real in conclusion i might mention that there's an organization called the puppeteers of america an authentic your vitally interested in the picture you probably benefit from joining they have a journal it comes out every couple months and they have a festival annually and membership is open to individuals and groups of all ages dressed in the same way i want to write it down right ok the addresses the puppeteers of america box and sixty one o y o j hardt california produce nine three go to three they're also books in your library on how to make puppets and books on the sparkle leaving a very beautiful when their vital baird and it's called the art of the puppet or to flee austria thank you for joining us

Program Description
What are little Muppets made of? Plastic rubber, contact cement, and fleecing cloth ? this is the stuff, answers puppeteer Jim Henson, creator-director of the zany group of puppets known as ?Muppets, Inc.? who perform every day on the season?s new smash hit ?Sesame Street.? Jim Henson, assisted by some fellow puppeteers and by his Muppets, presents an instruction, entertaining hour on the history, design, and creation of puppets. Audiences? young and old alike will marvel at the intricacies of puppetry as they watch Henson and his colleagues behind stage performing a ?Sort-of-Cinderella? tale with Muppet dog Rowlf. In this version of Cinderella, the heroine is really Red Riding Hood and her prince is Hansel. Hansel?s cow Gretel jumps over the moon, while Cinderella eats the little bear?s porridge. Host Henson illustrates the fascinating history of puppets and shows viewers puppets from various periods and countries, some of which are collector?s items. We learn the four basic kinds of puppets ? those manipulated by hand, strings (called marionettes), rods, and fingers. The Rajasthani Puppet from India is over 2,000 years old and is believed to be the forerunner of the marionette. Puppet builder Don Sahlin joins Jim for a lesson on how to make some simple puppets. Later their creations perform a play, ?The King, the Witch and the Feather named Edward,? demonstrating that even simple puppets can provide enjoyment. NET Children?s Special ? ?Muppets on Puppets? is an NET presentation, produced by WITF-TV, Hershey, PA. NET Executive Producer: Paul K. Tatf.
